IS IT TOO LATE TO CHANGE KANSAS CITY MLK BLVD BACK TO THE PASEO?!?!

The main point of contention NOTED FIRST ON TKC is that there isn't a funding mechanism built into the petition and a few City Hall insiders believe that's why it can be rendered invalid.

Meanwhile, here's a bit of followup on the topic wherein Democracy might provide us a way out of a tense debate. Checkit:

Martin Luther King Jr. Signs Go Up As Petition To Change It Back To Paseo Gains Support

Kansas City, Missouri, residents opposed to the city council's vote to rename Paseo Boulevard to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. have no plans to slow down. A member of the Blue Hills Neighborhood Association, Cheryl Barnes is part of a petition drive to reverse the January decision.

Can we please name something after James Earl Ray? He was an American hero.

No it's not to late! Change it back, this was done behind the tax payers back and we are the ones paying for it. We don't have the money to pay the King family annually for the use of their name. What this city did was dirty. I will only refer to it as The Paseo. Sly is dirty so is Quinton Lucas and the others.

FIX THE STREETS!

Have a nice stroll down the MLK blvd. on this nice spring day.

It's sure as Hell too late if either of the two Sly James Flunkys that we are told "won" the Primary get into office!

Justice or Lucas, Lucas or Justice, there's no difference (other than skin tone or tonnage) between them!

The same old shit of ignoring the resident's needs and taking massive bribes from Developers will continue unabated no matter which one "wins"!

A Chastain write-in vote is the only hope for change and progress!

Where do I sign?

@:50 be sure to wear your Kevlar vest and a Helmet!

We need signs that say—-Attention you are now entering the shithole ghetto. Danger! Enter at your own risk. Be armed and alert! The police are no help whatsoever!

Maybe something like Swope Park or Prospect Ave?

Name it THE GAUNTLET.

Or the SEWER.

There is already a sign posted that implicitly says all of that.
It is called "Martin Luther King Blvd."

It is too late to encourage you stupid homies to pull your heads out of your asses and stop making fucking racist stupid demands like this? Just wondering

At least the MLK name warns everyone where not to go.

Irony, new street sign going up over a pothole.

J. C. Nichols Parkway is named after an avowed racist who "red lined" minorities for years. Why not rename that street to MLK?

Anonymous said...

Because, @10:31, it's J. C. Nichols Parkway!

Just as the Paseo will remain the Paseo despite any irrelevant actions emanating from "The Joke On Oak" and miscellaneous "Failing Stars".

The Paseo Bridge, Broadway Bridge and 47th Street haven't changed among the residents, why should the Paseo itself?

10:31: And Martin Luther King Jr. was an adulterer and a plagiarist. So let's rename MLK Jr. Blvd.

Anonymous said...

I guess now all the hookers will have to get new business cards. New signs also going up saying Martin Luther Coon Blvd and Welcome To Nigger Town.*enter at your ow risk)

10:31 certainly everyone should have been more prepared after the 40 acres went South!! well instead, there was 'the great exodus' to KAnsas and then there was also The Great Migration, the movement of 6 million African-Americans out of the rural Southern United States to the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West that occurred between 1910 and 1970. "Quindaro, Kansas thrived for some period before, during, and after the Exoduster movement."

They would probably not have gotten as much outrage and backlash if they put as much energy into repairing the streets as they did pushing through the name change.

It is too late for the petitioners even though the 1700 plus signatures was impressive. It will not go anywhere unless people decide to take it to the court.

Sneakily rename Cleaver Blvd after a white person and see what sort of riots that would stir up. There is already an MLK Park in KC, so it’s not like the city hasn’t already bestowed an honor albeit unnecessary given that King had nothing to do with KC. Paseo is much too historic to be renamed. Kudos to those circulating the petition and to those who sign it.

^^^ and a school too, I was traveling down mlk from 18th and vine and the new signs were up to around 61st I think, they haven’t reached 63rd yet

You can call it anything you like, but most people will still call it the paseo, just like the paseo bridge!

Why couldn't they have honored the man and honored the city's history by renaming the street The Martin Luther King Paseo? Something for everyone.
