Tonight we conclude our blogging blast with a scathing critique of the leaders in the mayoral contest.
This analysis is rough and unflinching but with so many candidates competing, the judgements going around were destined to get more severe . . .
So check this TKC reader estimation of the candidates moving to the front of the contest . . .
KCMO MAYORAL RACE THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST? NOT EXACTLY!
JERMAINE REED claimed a Master's degree from UMKC, but never earned one. DISQUALIFIED
QUINTON LUCAS (attorney), described by himself and others as a KU Law Professor, is actually a Lecturer of Law at the KU School of Law. Big difference. Oh, and then there's that matter of a recent DUI arrest. DISQUALIFIED
SCOTT TAYLOR (attorney), likes to talk about his time on the Center School District Board, but actually sends his own son to the private $20K/year Barstow School. And isn't it convenient that he rakes in developer cash after approving their tax-subsidized building projects as Chair of the Planning/Zoning Committee? Ethics dictates that you don't do anything that even gives the appearance of impropriety. DISQUALIFIED
JOLIE JUSTUS (attorney), claims her experience in Jefferson City makes her a better choice, but it didn't stop her from skirting basic ethics in attempting to award KCMO's largest ever public infrastructure project (airport terminal) without a bidding process, to a company that donates to her campaign. And even she recognized that she wasn't the best candidate, as she quit the race to endorse an opponent. DISQUALIFIED
########
And so the search continues for a mayoral candidate with the cash to be taken seriously but without all of the baggage that these City Hall politicos are taking with them into the upcoming election.
You decide . . .
steve miller it is, he's the space cowboy you know you shouldn't trust but might have to.
ReplyDeleteSomewhere in Virginia Clay Chastain is praying for a miracle. Keep the fire Clay, keep the fire.
DeleteLucas was sleeping in his car and not operating his car so that's a nothing burger. Lucas is also qualified to be a lecturer at UMKC and that's what professors do is lecture.
ReplyDeleteHe had control of the car which is against the dui law. Lecturer and Professor are two distinct job titles. If he called himself a professor, he is a liar. Disqualified.

ReplyDeleteEverywhere in Kansas City liberals are sticking their finger up their butt because they love crime bad streets and higher taxes to feed the rich. Keep that finger up your butt and keep f***ing yourselves.
^^^ He's got my vote. KC needs another booze hound. Sly got sour.
ReplyDeleteJolie eats a lot of pussy.
ReplyDeleteBeth for Mayor!

ReplyDeleteNot all of that is true, Lucas does have a degree. And he does teach so it's a arguable issue.
ReplyDeleteCourses Taught:
Administrative Law
Contracts
Securities Regulation
He does not have the title of Professor.
Delete^^ Hey Super Dave
ReplyDeleteNobody's claiming Lucas isn't an attorney who earned a law degree, it's the false claim that he's a KU Law "Professor."
A "Lecturer of Law" is like an entry-level teaching position, whereas the "Professor" title is typically earned after many years and proven expertise in your field.
A meter-maid is not a police officer.
A bookkeeper is not a Certified Public Accountant.
A nursing assistant is not an M.D.
He is a liar and a drunk. And maybe not honest enough to come out. Disqualified.
DeleteAll of the things the writer said are reasons not to vote for these people, but none of it actually disqualifies them.
ReplyDeleteThis is just propaganda.
Tony knows who the anonymous writer is, & whether he is being disingenuous or not.
Okay, you guys want a "real" candidate? Phil Glynn > Steve Miller. So most of us want someone not associated with this God awful City Council, right? Here's the deal: Miller's campaign war chest is full of just as much developer money as our current City Council members (Canady aside, of course). Why do we want a candidate with the most campaign cash if it's all tainted with dirty money from developers they will owe favors to after the election? Phil Glynn was freaking KICKED OFF the TIF Commission for voting against these sketchy deals. What more do we want in a candidate, KC?!! No, he doesn't have the developer $$ war chest. No, he has not been elected to city council before. No, he is not pandering to voters by talking ONLY about potholes. This guy is talking about REAL issues, people. PAY ATTENTION!!! VOTE SMART. Do you want the status quo? Yes? Then go ahead and vote for Miller, Justus, Lucas, Reed, Taylor, or Wagner. You've been warned.
ReplyDeleteAt KU a Lecturer of Law is like an Assistant professor and has been a gray area for a long time. In Law School not just anyone is allowed to teach a class. Dave is sort of right he is listed at KU as a "Visiting Assistant Professor, University of Kansas School of Law, 2012-present". While he isn't maybe a full professor nonetheless he still is a professor. In the content of this story I have to say it's a nitpicky issue that carries very little weight for debate.
ReplyDeleteThere are many reasons to not vote for Lucas aside from this nitpicky professor issue.
ReplyDeleteI agree 11:12 that's the least of the reasons why.
ReplyDelete11:17, is anyone ever going to list these reasons? It's time.
ReplyDeleteYou picked the wrong hiss to die on. Lucas wiki says "Quinton Lucas joined the Kansas University faculty of Law in 2012" You can say Lucas wasn't tenured but you're splitting hairs. Lucas could take Clay Chastain in a debate. No Mayor can take on a pet project like Sly James did with a new airport and Lucas understands that. Chastain couldn't last 90 minutes in a debate and would be unable to sway votes on City Council to vote his way. The big issue is out of state bidders getting contracts and City Council flipping bids like hotcakes. What matters is if the next mayor can continue to build broad base support after the election. Sly courted the hipster techies and slid through the next election. The next Mayor has to deal with an entirely new world that what Kansas City has experienced in the past fifty years. Could Lucas be re elected in four years? Jolie is Sly 2.0, Chastain will be buried alive in the first four years and he didn't even work on his campaign. It's clear Lucas is the best outsiders in this race.
ReplyDeleteJust in case tl;dr
DeleteVote Lucas.
Sure 11:27, just look at what he has and hasn't done while in office. If you don't know those things, I'd say it's time to yank your head out of your ass and watch, listen and learn a thing or two.
ReplyDelete11:35, Oh I know these things about Lucas, trust me....I'm just ready for everyone else to learn! And 11:33, the fact that you are even considering Lucas an "outsider" is hilarious. I'm not into Chastain. I'm not into Miller. I think it's time for voters to take a serious look at Phil Glynn if we really want change. A Miller vote is not a vote against the status quo. Not at all.
ReplyDeletePhil Glynn is a wet noodle.
DeleteGood one. I’ll take wet noodle over sketchy lawyers all day long.
Delete"SCOTT TAYLOR (attorney), likes to talk about his time on the Center School District Board, but actually sends his own son to the private $20K/year Barstow School."
ReplyDelete...except he doesn't send his kid to private school.
Weird.
11:48 where does he go to school?
ReplyDelete11:48 did Taylor's son transfer schools? I believe he did go to Barstow in 2017.
ReplyDeleteWhat are reasons to disqualify Canady? Real question.
ReplyDeleteYou have a brain.
DeleteI’m into Canady and Glynn...all of the others are a developer’s dream, no thank you
ReplyDeleteWe would LOVE to see Glynn and Canady advance/ the only God damned two who make sense. Grassroots, please please activate do not make us live with this current council as mayor
ReplyDeleteActually, of course, padding your resume and outright lying shouldn't disqualify any of the candidates for KCMO mayor or city council.
ReplyDeleteThat behavior and worse is what they will continue to do AFTER the low-information pitifully low turnout election puts them in office.
All the "anomalies" listed are simply warmups for what's to come.
Sort of try before you buy.
It never changes.
KCMO will win with Glynn.
ReplyDeleteThe best candidate is Scott Wagner. He is the only one who opposed the fiasco affiliated with the KCI airport. When will the citizens get tired of paying more for projects due to ignorance of the elected body?
ReplyDeleteAnybody but Jolie Justus!!!!!
ReplyDelete11:48 comment
ReplyDeleteDON'T BRING A KNIFE TO A GUNFIGHT
SCOTT TAYLOR'S SON IS A BARSTOW STUDENT
BARSTOW IS A PRIVATE ELITE $20K/YEAR SCHOOL
If you want to claim that one of Taylor's real-estate developer friends actually pays for the tuition, then state your case, but quit lying!
Drake Taylor, The Barstow School

Justus on the same team as Keith Ellison and Justin Fairfax?
ReplyDeleteI'd disqualify the niggers right away.
