TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! INSIDERS THREATEN STALLED KANSAS CITY NEW AIRPORT FULL STOP UNTIL AFTER ELECTION!!!

The new airport is now officially stalled.

Let's make that perfectly clear . . .

THE THREE -TIMES RESCHEDULED 'GROUNDBREAKING' WAS FINALLY PLANNED FOR JANUARY BUT THE AIRLINES ARE STILL FAR AWAY FROM A DEAL!!! MAYOR SLY IS INCORRECT WHEN HE CLAIMS THE PROJECT IS ON TIME!!!

Sadly, it only get worse from there . . . Check the quick round-up . . .

- The project still needs an environmental report that isn't close to finished and might incur another month long delay if there's a 2nd government shut down.

- The Industrial Development Authority of Kansas City took action to provide about $90 million in short-term loans to the airport, so construction can begin as soon as a deal is in place. Critics of this money move are talking about a lawsuit over the funding switcheroo that breaks promises to voters about using taxpayer cash.

-  The financing for this big money FOUR BILLION DOLLAR LOAN BOND ISSUE are worsening given that the airport doesn't generate that kind rent from the airlines.

- The smaller airlines are shaking their fist at Southwest and council politicos are dangerously close to getting in the middle of another costly antitrust beef.

- Reported FIRST by TKC the council is now actively talking REBID. Edgemoor is living down to expectations and the cost of the new airport is simply too damn high. In turn, KC can expect a court fight on that front as well.

And so . . .

INSIDERS THREATEN AN EMERGENCY PETITION/ORDINANCE TO BRING NEW AIRPORT DECISIONS TO A FULL STOP UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTION!!!

There is precedent for this one . . .

Remember that about 4 years ago Mayor Sly staged a sketchy coup by garnering a voting bloc from the outgoing council to move forward on a new hotel as their tenures were coming to a conclusion. That push eventually resulted in KCMO paying $35-million bucks and a ton of tax breaks based on nothing more than drawings and promises. Now the convention hotel is also behind schedule and opening up to a market glutted with much nicer properties that can offer better service to upscale visitors while the taxpayer subsidized hotel simply looks like a flop house for low-rent scumbags.

And so . . .

New KCI Airport progress remains stalled over airline disputes but now there's blood in the water and more special interests are moving in to complicate the process even further.

Developing . . .

    1. actually, it's past time to start having a real discussion about renovation instead of a new airport. It's unfair that we can't even raise the question. The mayor and council violated the terms of the first vote. It's time to go back to the ballot, that is the petition I'd like to see.

    2. It's just a corporate chow line at this point. A great deal for the people at the front of the discussion.

  2. 90 million and so vote?

Thanks Jolie but not thanks, can't vote for you for mayor if you're going to let this stand.

  3. Mayor Bullhorn living up to his well-earned reputation as an incompetent clown who can barely manage his real job--being the corrupt representative of developers.

  4. Way past time for remodeling existing airport and having Nicole Galloway audit this mess as well as all city functions.

  5. NICE POST!
That's why I visit this blog...well, that and the babes!

  6. KC has pension funding problems... funny how no one talks about those. At the rate the city is borrowing, it could run out of borrowing capacity just when it's truly needed.

  7. they want to delay so less people vote for chastain. Leadership here is terrible and so disconnected between the needs of the people who actually live in the city and the "vision" of these delusional council members.

  8. NOBODY is worried about Clay Chastain, except for the delusional crackpots that vote for him.

  11. "Reported FIRST by KSHB the council is now actively talking REBID."

I fixed that for you, since you report nothing. You merely parrot what actual newsrooms report and call it your own.

    1. So mad! Tony would be out of a job if the so called media in this town had some actual integrity.

  12. ^^That's up for debate. That's what got Tony sued in the first place.

    1. No debate at all. The local news, if you can call it that, is nothing but a passive cheerleader for City Hall.

  13. Probably nothing that a couple more secret meetings and under-the-table deals can't fix.
Truly a fiasco of major proportions, even for KCMO, which has a very long history of insider dealing, incompetence, poor priorities, and outright dishonesty.
Sly needs to understand that how he finishes his tenure will be whatever "legacy" he might have.
And this airport mess will go on for years after he's long gone.

  14. @1:43, Tony got sued for a vendetta. Because of his no-holds-barred approach to news and information when it went to court, there was no one willing to say it was a BS suit. Unfortunately, TKC is in the position newsies used to be, no friends on either side of the political aisle because politicians/people knew they would be called to the carpet.

& 1:08, if it weren't for this blog, you wouldn't have a home to spew your invective prog garbage. Where you gonna go, huffpo? No fun shouting into the void where everyone shares your warped world view and hatred of America.

  15. My question is this: How could this process be more stalled than it is now? This is the biggest boondoggle since The Street car District. And there have been many smaller boondoggles since then too. (convention hotel, the "Light" buildings, parking garages, etc)

  17. I think if AOC wants to raise taxes it should be on public employees that charge overtime to the city, county or state, say a 70% tax on them.

  18. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid folks Clay is the best fresh air as a candidate for mayor, while the great leadership leaves broken infrastructure and taxpayers fleeing to Johnson county

  19. There are published RFPs about the construction being posted in newspapers presently so are you sure it is delayed?
    Thanks,
    Radish

  20. “Cap-your-ass-ital” that freaking hilarious!

  21. Glad to see the airlines are not letting the intolerant left government of KCMO bully them.

  22. Radish: Published RFPs (Requests for Proposal) are no proof the airport project is moving forward. Edgemoor has had 50 people working on this thing for months and still the delays, Council fights, etc. Where do you think the 90 mil is supposed to go? To pay Edgemoor and other contractors for time spent on this so far. None of that is a guarantee this thing won't explode. Remember: The city has been working with Edgey on the basis of temporary MOU, not a construction contract. An 800-page construction contract is still pending a Council vote. Until that contract is approved, there will be no new KCI with Edgey. Ditto an airline agreement. They don't sign off and this is DOA. Months later, the airlines are still MIA. This has the look of dead-man-walking.

    1. Thanks 3:58. Maybe they are lining up bids for when they finish contract formation. But if that's what is happening then that's really jerking around the potential contractors/subcontractors.... Maybe they used to it in the world of public projects. And I looked at a notice and it says "contingent on faa approval, funding approval from KC & a notice to proceed issued by KC aviation blah blah blah"

  23. 5:34: Hard to know if the local media are pro-City Hall. It know it looks that way. But it could be the hacks who goose that corpse are just too dim and lazy to look below the surface of airport press releases. Most reporters are the kind of lazy that would be fatal if breathing required any thinking. They're a lot like city officials.

  24. Newspaper hints at some of this stuff but they'll only say it after everyone else has. Check some of those links that TKC posted. They're all from the TV stations who are also watching this debacle.
