Mission Gateway Plan Crumbling

Building continues but the anchor is OUT and it looks like they're simply working to construct an empty shell . . . Which is only slightly better than the lunar landing surface that currently stands in the empty lot. Read more:

New tenant replacing Walmart planned for Mission Gateway

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A new tenant is helping developers move along the Mission Gateway project, which has been in the works for more than a decade. The project is located near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Roe Avenue. The Kansas City Business Journal reports the project is now ramping up, thanks to success in leasing out the space.

  1. I miss the old mall that was there. They had a hermit crab store ... remember that? I guess it wasn't economically viable but it wasn't run down and it was close to the city. And these years of vacancies plus construction costs ... how is that a better ROI for the owner than a slightly obsolete small size mall?

  3. ^^^^^^^^^^ +100

This is a plan for failure, the rebuild is not going to work.

  4. An “entertainment complex” sounds like something that will draw “diversity.” The Guadalajara Walmart in Roeland Park is nasty enough. JoCo doesn’t need any more “diversity.”

  5. If they won't announce it I am betting the Shady Lady is either moving there or opening a Shady Lady II. New jobs for Leawood Mom's. See you there!

  6. Yeah it's a tough position. I understand residents not wanting a "diverse" shopping center in their relatively safe part of town, but it's also just been a dirt lot there for like 20 years since they razed the mall. But they're proposing a hotel!? Hotels seem like some sort of weird pyramid scheme or something. I don't see there being a market for a hotel in that part of mission, kansas
