City Hall & 311 closed for Presidents Day

Holiday trash schedule in effect

In observance of Presidents Day, City offices and the 311 Center will be closed on Feb. 18. As a result, trash and recycling collection schedules will move to the holiday schedule.

For example, trash normally picked up on Monday will be collected on Tuesday. The remaining trash collection schedule will be adjusted by one day (Friday collection will be on Saturday, Feb.23)

City Hall will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Cold weather resources and help

The City encourages residents to use these resources to help combat cold weather.

Residents, including those homeless, needing refuge from the frigid weather are welcome to warm up in public buildings, such as the City’s ten community centers, during regular business hours. United Way of Greater Kansas City has access to thousands of resources including overnight shelters. Dial 211 to access this resource. RideKC provides a warming bus on cold weather days. Check the RideKC Twitter feed for times and locations.

- The City’s Health Department has information on preventing and treating cold-related conditions such as carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, frostbite and hypothermia. Also available are:

- instructions on keeping safe in extreme cold (tips on dressing warmly, preparing your car, and much more),

- keeping food safe in a power outage

- winter power outage help

- winter injury prevention (including winter walking safety, winter driving, what to do about downed power lines, and physical stress)

You can also review the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s severe cold weather tips.

The KCPD advises you:

- Do not leave your vehicle running unattended. That is an invitation for thieves to steal it, and City Ordinance prohibits it.

- Call 911 if you are worried about the welfare of someone in this cold weather and have been unable to reach them.

Note that both residential and business sidewalks should be cleared of snow and ice in a reasonable time after winter storms have passed. This City ordinance is for the safety of residents.

If you are unable to shovel snow, please dial 211 to reach the United Way’s free resource line for help with snow removal. Additionally, many local faith-based organizations have snow shoveling volunteers.
