FLASH!!! AIRLINES AGREE TO IMPOSSIBLE LOWER NEW KCI AIRPORT PRICE TAG!!!

Here's an evening news slide worth a peek for tonight . . .

Airlines serving KCI agree to costs of project for new, single-terminal airport

Deets:

"A representative for Southwest Airlines, which is speaking for the other airlines, will tell city they have agreed to the costs of project at $1.5 billion, not the previously estimated $1.64 billion. The eight carriers serving KCI have told the city they are willing to pay for a new, single-terminal airport at KCI, and talks have been underway for months on the price the airlines are willing to pay. But several sources describe the $1.5 billon as “hard” number, implying that is as high as the airlines are willing to go."

More . . .

"This is fantastic news for Kansas City," Councilwoman Jolie Justus, chairwoman of the City Council's Airport Committee, said in a statement. "We thank the airlines for their hard work to solve some big issues and for coming to an agreement that the City Council can soon vote to approve."

KC Biz Journal fine print:

"The airlines operating out of Kansas City International Airport have reached an agreement among themselves on how they will split costs on the $1.6 billion single-terminal modernization project."

Fox4: After months of negotiations, airlines reach deal to fund new KCI single terminal airport

“Edgemoor has been working closely with both the airlines and KCAD to advance the single terminal project. We are in strong alignment, and look forward to beginning an exciting new chapter on this project,” said Edgemoor Project Manager Geoff Stricker.

The city council has held off on approving a development agreement until the airlines coalesced around the cost.

The details of the plan are expected to be released during the airport committee meeting scheduled for Thursday at 9:45 a.m.

Fact check . . .

KANSAS CITY CAN'T BUILD A NEW AIRPORT FOR THAT NUMBER!!!

And so . . .

TRANSLATION: NO DEAL!!!

So consider this "news" more of a weird flex by the airlines.

  2. Hooray for the airlines for not allowing KCMO to scam them with a failed, overpriced, inconvenient boondoggle referred to as an improved airport.

  3. Wonderful news for the taxpayers of failing KCMO.

  4. But wait. I thought billions of air passengers are going to demand that as part of their ticket purchase they get to stop for a layover at World Class Frosty City?

  5. Just talked with Carwash Cleaver and Frank White’s doppelgänger- have great news as these two financial geniuses have struck great deals to pay up to the needed $10 Billion with these outstanding airlines:

    TWA
    BRANIFF
    EASTERN
    Pan Am

While details have not been revealed- the Mensa-like energy got the deal done!

They are now applying AOC principles to get Medicaid (Lol) for all!

    What could go wrong?

  10. Now got to get free streetcar extension up there. That's the ticket.

  11. Prices quoted in various news pieces range from 1.6 to 1.9 billion. If the airlines won't go above 1.5, will Edgemoor agree to build this thing for at least 100 million less? If so, what will that airport look like? Crap on stilts? Time to rebid?

After boondoggling the airport terminal project from start to finish, Justus For Mayor flights are permanently grounded!!!

  13. So it looks like this means that the "project" will proceed until it reaches the point of having spent $1.5 billion, and at that point "progress" will cease.
Maybe no roof on what's been completed?
    Maybe no furnishings?
Maybe the taxpayers of KCMO will have to pony up to complete what's sure to be a cut-rate embarrassing building.
And at the rate Sly and the gang are going, $1.5 billion will barely get the current terminals torn down.
    A frosty fail.

  14. Nice to see the airlines standing up to Slie and holding their ground. They just have Slie a big FU.

  15. Another Midtown Mom2/6/19, 7:32 PM

This deal is just another disaster waiting to happen, can't believe KC would be so stupid as to even consider this!

  16. Name it the KANSAS CITY BLANK CHECK AIRPORT because that's what it has been so far.

  17. Here's my problem with this so-called deal = There is still no guarantee that Kc taxpayers won't have to pay for it all in the end. This is a city resource and we're letting the airlines dictate the terms to us. That's insane, do you ask renters what they'd like to pay? Same thing is happening here, the inmates are running the asylum and the only thing that's holding it together is the fact that KC taxpayers are going to be picking up the check.

  18. Jolie is getting desperate at this point. She realizes that she only has Steve Kraske on her side.

  20. What a bargain! Only 640 million more then they promised! Happy days people!

  21. KCMO needs to cancel the failed airport deal and cut their losses.

  22. @7:35pm
The inmates are running the asylum, all right, and the institution referred to is at 12th and Oak in downtown KCMO.
The upside-down priorities, reckless spending, manipulation and inappropriate use of various accounts, and the taking on of burdensome long-term debt has been going on for over six years now.
And, with the current menagerie of mayoral candidates, is likely to change or even slow down in the years ahead.
And all supported by nothing other than hype, hot air, and the mindless support of what passes for local "media".
If the plaque of failure includes all the names it's going to have to be very very large.
    Really a shame.
    And a national embarrassment.

  23. Jolie is turning into a world class scammer.
