The warm & fuzzy Christmas sentiments have passed and now, yet again, the question of an MLK name change for an iconic Kansas City street confront the City Council as election silly season looms.
A quick recap . . .
- Residents and a name change committee suggest the 63rd Street East To West alternative which has more grassroots support.
- The Revs promised a ballot initiative but backed down when questions over a funding mechanism became more pointed and supporters of The King Family don't like talking about royalties and naming rights they sell to cities across the nation. A measure brought forward by Councilman Lucas and sponsored by Council Lady Shields and Councilmen Barnes, Jr. and Taylor starts the process by taking $60K from the General Fund wherein all future expenses can be more easily hidden.
- New Gentry in Northeast seem to be opposing the effort with the fiercest opposition given that it threatens to impose a racial dividing line touted by the Revs in a neighborhood where new, expensive housing is making progress in transforming the urban community with upscale housing for young professionals.
The smart money is on a quick and dirty move by the Council to make this happen and keep moving forward into election season.
And so we ask . . .
WILL MLK RENAME VOTES INFLUENCE THE MAYOR'S RACE?!??!
Pun intended, but not in a mean way . . . Simply acknowledging that this old school issue of the bygone Civil Rights era still mires KCMO in a discussion of culture war politics whilst the rest of the world is fighting over the global marketplace impact that doesn't discriminate in its cruelty as much as small town politicos.
You decide . . .
Follow the reverends and the activists and discourage development that creates jobs and brings in new money to a neighborhood that needs private investment. That sounds like a plan.
ReplyDeleteThis is the part I hate about KC politics, anybody who disagrees with the MLK name change is branded as a racist. If Quinton makes this his biggest issue, it might hurt his chances as Mayor.
DeleteSomebody on council should come up with a resolution for 63rd street. This is getting ridiculous. Pass it the 63rd ordinance this week and get it done. It's not as big of a deal for KC as some are making it out to be, very few people are willing to march in the street for this issue any longer. It should've been an honorary street in the 18th & Vine district years ago. We're paying enough for that area as is.
ReplyDeleteWhy stop at just a street? Name the whole inner city after him. We could call it “MLK Memorial Shithole Ghetto”.

Killing Blvd.
How fitting.
The fat Revs are resisting because they want more kickbacks.
ReplyDeleteI think we should also, rename the whole city to Louis Farrakhan Ville.
ReplyDeleteOverland Park, should be Stokley Carmichael Berg.
Grandview should be called Black View.
Raytown will be called Rayciss Town to remind us of all the sins we are born with.
Lee's Summit will be renamed Treyvonville.
Martin City will be called Reparations City.
It's about time whitey started atoning for all of those sins.
Completely unnecessary and a huge waste of Taxpayer dollars. Will not change a thing, period. It may even drive people away from that area as many people will avoid MLK Street in any city for fear of crime and violence. Paseo much too historic in its own right.
ReplyDeleteShould call Anderson Vanderbilt Cooper to do a 60 minutes blurb.
ReplyDeleteThis triggers me!!! No!!! I'm so offended!!! Trigger warning! Trigger warning!
ReplyDelete^^ Turn that trigger on yourself.
ReplyDelete^^You first loser.
ReplyDeleteGeezer boi did I trigger you! Finally you noticed me! Ive been waiting a long time for you to notice me! Is this the day I get to hold you in my arms and make mad passionate love to you!
ReplyDeleteAngry Geezer boy who's mother didn't change his diaper so he has a permanent butt rash, has no clue that changing the name of the Paseo will cost more money than the tax payers have and also will have to pay MLK's family for using his name. Seems kind of lame since our city needs so much work done and we are worrying about a street name change. Seems like Quinton Lucas is the racist one he won't stop until he shows his black power.
ReplyDelete^So triggered! Get to your safespace geezer. You're too stupid to know you're being trolled by Tony. You swallowed the bait whole!
ReplyDelete^^^ don’t forget we’re already paying them to use his name for a park on flush creek and a school off of woodland. How much are we already paying them and why should we pay them anything?
ReplyDeleteI for one would like to know what they’re getting paid now and that alone should keep his name off of anything in killa shitty.
8:15 geezer hater I want you now! I’m sooooo turned on by your triggeredness! C’mon g-boi, I want you now!
ReplyDeleteNot one fukn cent to that leach'n grifter family.
ReplyDelete^^My butt hurts so bad right now! I'm triggered! This is triggering me!!!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe we should name the court house or city jail after him.
ReplyDeleteMy diaper is filling up fast over this! I'm so triggered.
ReplyDeleteGeezer boi,
ReplyDeleteI. Want. You. Sooooooooo. Bad. Cum. To. Me. Now!
Geezer girl is triggered look out everybody she’s so important and all she just might go postal.
ReplyDeleteHey guys...wait for it..MLK....ugh....ugh...I'm filling up my diaper!!!!!! Trigger warning!!!!!!
ReplyDelete8:46 you triggered my horny member! Cum on g-boi! Let’s hookup for some hot man on man black on white sexcapades! I know you want me! You want me BAD!
ReplyDeleteGeezer hater is gay, black and into coprophilia.... so many strikes against him no wonder he’s an angry little man. Sad.
ReplyDeleteWow this will create unimaginable prosperity for that corridor.
ReplyDeleteQuinton Lucas doesn't really want to be Mayor.
ReplyDeleteAnd, if he keeps pushing this street name change to MLK (with required payments for naming rights) he won't even make it past the primary.
This issue completely reveals Lucas to be just another fiscally inefficient Democrat who'd rather waste time and money on frivolities than reforming KCMO's broken system.
Vegas disagrees with you...
DeleteThis is nothing more then a bone tossed to crumbling and demoralized East KC. Like pacifying an over anxious dog.
ReplyDelete^^^ they are dogs
ReplyDeleteWarm and fuzzy, silly season, grass roots support, upscale housing, young urban professionals, smart money, quick and dirty, culture war politics, global marketplace, small town politicos.
ReplyDeleteThere! We've covered every tired cliche in the Tony Botello Cliche Book. What's next?
^^A Hoopz article, or better yet Sharice Davids! Nothing gets these geezers to shit themselves faster than her!
ReplyDeleteI’m not joking when I write this...I’m very surprised city council has not tried to rename main st or admiral boulevard to Obama boulevard. Screw the historical roots of troost or Paseo or any other street. We need social justice in our pavements, er...I mean potholes!
ReplyDeleteAnd so...just like most roads named MLK there will be black on black violence littered all around it. Crumbling and neglected sidewalks, and used syringes lying around. So you go for it quinton, you get that name change and all the magic unicorns will ascend from the sky to KC. It will be so historic you can even give yourself your own gold shovel ceremony and then your own ribbon cutting ceremony. With passive claps and shitty grins as you smile at the small crowd who attends.
James Earl Ray Boulevard
ReplyDeleteThis is the dumbest fucking idea i've ever heard. token name changes are more racist.
ReplyDelete^^Quick, to your safespace! Sounds like you're triggered!

Kuldesack
Lets see...How might we use this extra moneys.
ReplyDelete1. 18th and Vine
2. Jazz Museum
3. MLK Renaming of Paseo
4. New grocery store in the 4th District.
5. City funded dry cleaners next to new grocery at Linwood
We can’t even get stripes painted on the damn streets and they want to spend, no waste, money yearly paying another greedy ass black family that’s had nothing to do with killa shitty, makes perfect sense in this shit hole town.

Kash
Democratics trive on victimhood. By naming something MLK the white Democrats can remind an area they are black and needy and we the Democrats are here to help. Stop falling for this crap.
ReplyDeleteJames Earl Ray is a hero
ReplyDelete^^and you have a little cock. That's what your wife tells me.
ReplyDeleteMy question is how many places have been named after MLK that Mr. King if alive would be saying would you please take my name off of there?
ReplyDeleteI am also guessing that Mr King would not be happy seeing tax dollars wasted that could be used for better things than to simply have his name on it so his existing family members could all be paid for sitting on their butts and doing nothing.
Bill Paseo was a dick. He punched horses and used the N-word a lot. Change the name.
ReplyDelete12:20 good try dickhead, it’s not true and you know it, this is exactly what’s wrong with you people, if you don’t get your way you make shit up like a bunch of spoiled rotten pussies.
ReplyDeleteDude, it was a joke. I don't think anyone thought is was real. Bill Paseo did steal candy from babies though.
DeleteI did get you on the Bill Paseo thing. Made up name.
DeleteNO MORE...
ReplyDeleteSTYLE OVER SUBSTANCE..
This helps the tax payers/citizens how??
Improves the quality of life?
Makes us safer??
Feeds the hungry?
Houses the homeless??
Helps the needy??
Improve schools??
Stop crime??
Then please,do tell what its going to do...
^^Boy..you got your diaper full on that one didn't ya?
ReplyDeleteGeezers have no sense of humor. It's why nobody like or even tolerates them. @12:56PM personifies this.
ReplyDeleteReally!!! With all the murders in this town you have to get your panties in a wad over a street name? Nobody is ever gonna call it that anyway, too long!!
ReplyDeleteI all my travels around the USA, I have never seen a MLK Blvd that wasn't a scary, high crime area. I cannot imagine that changing the name of Paseo to MLK will improve the fact that it is a beautiful boulevard in terrible part of town. The MLK name is just a kiss of death. It telegraphs, "This is a high crime, minority-filled street. If you have any sense at all, you will stay away."
ReplyDeleteJames Earl Ray>MLK
ReplyDeleteHow bout Kanye West Blvd.
ReplyDelete2:13 you are the queen of nonsense and stupidity
ReplyDeletejust leave it as queen! Although his mother may still be living, so may be just a princess!

This Council does not represent the Majority of the City voters. Several Council members sit quiet while the load dominating Members from the 3td and 5th districts dominate the agenda. I have lived here for 9 years and think frequently about moving across the state line to get out from under this Council and its agenda.
ReplyDelete$ 10,000,000 to the 18th and Vine district just approved. Where are the Council members who are suppose to keep this wasteful agenda from becoming a reality???
ReplyDeleteJust think, with this money the Council could build another grocery store in the 3rd or 5th district.
The city is currently spending a small fortune replacing stolen copper wire to the street lights on Bruce R. Wadkins parkway. Until the "locals" can respect the roads we have named in "their" honor we should hesitate to rename anything in black honor, an oxymoronic idea at best.
