TKC MUST READ!!! TKC READER FACT CHECKS NEW KCI AIRPORT BROKEN PROMISES AMID CITY HALL CASH GRAB!!!

At the outset of this week we talked about the sketchy INTERFUND BORROWING proposed by City Hall to help pay for the airport. Taking cash from the Water Department, the general fund or anywhere else is just one part of the bait and switch underway . . .

And so, here's a worthwhile note sent our way on the topic of the current airport hot mess . . .

"KCMO taxpayers should loudly reject broken promises to voters, particularly by a city that struggles to provide the the most basic services. What's more basic than water? Now Kansas City wants to use Water Department funds to pay for airport bonds?!?!?!

"This is a symptom of failed city leadership. What rational person expects the airlines to rush into a deal that require's them to pay for over 4 billion dollars in debt? We haven't heard from the airlines directly? No kidding. Who expects the airlines to get involved in tangled local politics? Here's what the airlines are saying: Skip the local drama and just send us a deal we can live with . . .

"So who's really at fault? The airlines? Or city officials who let the cost of the new airport explode in the last year? We're in a hostage situation for sure. We're hostage to current city leadership not the airlines."

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. It's okay to blame them both.

The airline are being greedy and so is the council. In the end, it's the taxpayers who are left holding the tab. Too bad.

  2. The City Hallers can take money from any source (taxpayer funded, of course) and spend it on anything they want. Who is going to stop them?

  3. General fund is just a slush fund.

But if we're going to leverage water, you might as well give the project to Burns & McDonnell since they already own the water department. This is not what Edgemoor promised.

Nothing like seeing millions and millions of dollars go up in smoke thanks to poor planning and a sloppy ballot proposal.

  6. The airport was always going to be a boondoggle. I remember all of those photos about how bad the lines where and how this would help end all waiting at the airport. Now we're still waiting for construction to start. Ironic. Don'tcha think?

  7. Before it's all said and done, the airport will cost $5 billion dollars and not one penny less.

  8. Lack of leadership, lack of HONEST and KNOWLEDGEABLE leadership. Fire the city manager. Fire Troy Schulte. It really is as simple as that. The council is muddled with all the detail. Big picture? The city manager has NOT served the council well. It really is that simple.

  10. We can’t get the streets striped or potholes fixed so how can we expect the clown patrol at city hall to get an airport built.

  11. ^^^^^ Good point.

Look at the last major construction project KC took on. It was Brush Creek and it fills with turds every time it rains. Good luck with all that KC!

  13. Top 5 Airport Things That Should or Will Happen:

    1. $10 Billion to be spent
    2. Renamed “Carwash C- Frank W Financial Airport”
    3. Volunteers tasked with painting of existing terminal with paint from thrift stores. To address eating and food- multiple alliance of area churches to provide additional food so travelers have more food.
    4. To address the aging visual 80’s and 90’s decorum- editorial members of KC Starless and city hall will have VR goggles and CBD oil delivered to them anytime the need to use the airport.
    5. Since the airlines could care less and like how we have a terminal that’s not being used now- a harem of employees from the bunny ranch will be available on an as-needed basis at the not-used terminal for executives to use to satisfy their whims. To jog the legality- mile- high flight clubs will be in use.

  14. A rehab of the existing KCI would have been done in less time than what council has wasted trying to get the airlines to sign on to a rigged contract.

It is past time to have Nicole Galloway audit this boondoggle.

  15. The money from the water dept. should be used to lower our outrageously high water bills. Mine is always over $100 a month when it used to be $30 a month.

  16. The city is to blame. I don't blame the airlines because they're a business and need to make a profit to stay around. However, city officials are supposed to be advocates for the populace

  18. The need for a “New Terminal” at KCI that does not adding one essential service to the flying public is so erroneous, the Airlines are now questioning the real need and cost!

January 8, 2014, (5 years ago) KC’s City officials closed “Terminal A” as a cost savings effort, yet they want to obligate the Airport, Airlines and flying public with an overall debt of $3 Billion. Yes $3 Billion, when the 30 year debt is paid off, to build a 39 gate terminal. KCI has 66 gates available if “Terminal A” was reopened. Why, would any airport chose to reduce gate capacity 40%, restrict growth, eliminate competition, and increase operational cost 3 fold with little or no forecast increase in passengers?

Southwest offered to take over “Terminal A” early on but the City said “NO” stating they were going to build a new terminal at that location. SWA had plans to expand operations and establish a “Pilot Hub” in KC but because of the “NO” they did so in St. Louis. What a loss for KC!

$3 Billion or $78 Million a gate is preposterous not to mention the millions already spent.

Thank you airlines for stepping up!

  19. The need for a “New Terminal” at KCI and the efforts behind the “Con Job” to all of KC’s Metropolitan Area flying public is so erroneous the Airlines are now questioning the need.

January 8, 2014, (5 years ago) KC’s City officials closed “Terminal A” as a cost savings effort, yet they want to obligate the Airport, Airlines and flying public with an overall debt of near $3 Billion, yes $3 Billion when the debt is paid off, to build a 39 gate terminal. KCI currently have 66 gates available if they would just reopen “Terminal A”.

To create the need for the “New Single Terminal” they consolidated the two largest and busiest airlines (Southwest and Delta) into Terminal B. This effort was not for cost saving measures, it was designed to create congestion and the appearance that “Terminal B” was too small, holding rooms were too small, not enough shopping, not enough restaurants, too few bathrooms and the list of deceit continued. Our Mayor even had to postpone the vote because the scheme had not fully materialized as anticipated. He then initialed a campaign, full of deception, misleading voters of only KC, which is only about on forth of our metropolitan population. He even sweetened the pot by guaranteeing jobs, holding job fairs, promising buses to transport workers, day care services, and the list was endless. In the end, the proposal on the ballot does not resemble what is now proposed cost wise or promised.

It is way past time that the Airlines have stopped this effort!! How many millions of dollars have already been spent on unnecessary project?
