TKC MUST READ!!! TAX FIGHTER FACT CHECK: NEW KANSAS CITY AIRPORT COSTS $4-BILLION AND RISING!!!

Credit to our tax fighter friends at CITIZENS FOR RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT KANSAS CITY who take offer some important data with City Hall documentation of the SKYROCKETING COSTS at New KCI.

Reality . . .

TKC TOLD YOU SO!!! THE NEW KANSAS CITY AIRPORT COSTS $4-BILLION AND IT'S TOO PRICEY FOR MANY AIRLINES!!!

We talked about the $4-billion number back in November but this update look offers more facts and figures along with great context. Checkit:

Take a look, we've highlighted some of the best passages:

Say Hello to your $4 BILLION DOLLAR PLUS terminal at KCI..

CFRG: THE LATEST POINT OF CONTENTION IS THE COST -- We’re being asked to spend a fortune for a smaller, less convenient, less safe facility. This quote below from a CFRG airport consultant...

"The need for a “New Terminal” at KCI which does not add one essential service to the flying public is so erroneous, the Airlines are now questioning the real need and cost!

January 8, 2014, (5 years ago) KC’s City officials closed “Terminal A” as a cost savings effort, yet they want to obligate the Airport, Airlines and flying public with an overall debt of $3 Billion. Yes $3 Billion (when the 30 year debt is paid off) to build a 39 gate terminal.

KCI currently has 66 gates available if “Terminal A” was reopened. Why, would any airport chose to reduce gate capacity 40%, restrict growth, eliminate competition, and increase operational cost 3 fold with little or no forecast of increased passenger traffic?

Southwest (SWA) offered to take over “Terminal A” early on but the City said “NO”. SWA wanted to build a new terminal at that location. SWA had plans to expand operations and establish a “Pilot Hub” in KC but because the City sad “NO” they did so in St. Louis. What a loss for KC!

The early proposed cost of $3 Billion or $78 Million a gate is preposterous not to mention the millions already spent.”

Now the cost is at least FOUR BILLION DOLLARS and rising as taken from two ordinances noted below worth TWO BILLION DOLLARS each. These ordinances are circulating through City Hall for approval by our City Council. They will be up for discussion again on January 31st. THE ALARMING THING HERE IS, AFTER ALL THE HULLABALOO STATING "THE VOTERS WILL PAY NOTHING FOR THE AIRPORT”, THESE ORDINANCES PUT THE VOTERS ON THE HOOK FOR THE FULL, FOUR BILLION DOLLARS UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. If the funds from airport operations are not adequate to pay for the bonds, it states the city council can designate other funds to make the payments. The bonds are said to be for “a portion of the costs of the construction of a new passenger terminal..and related purposes.”.

The ordinance numbers are 190027 and 190028

These ordinances will be presented for passage again on January 31st at 9:45am at city hall during the Airport Committee meeting. As if $4 BILLION isn’t enough, in ordinance 190028, page 4, section 11; it gives the Aviation Department permission to borrow $90,000,000 from the water department. Is this in addition to the $72,000,000 they already requested from the city? So much for not using taxpayers dollars. CALL YOUR COUNCILPERSON if you disagree with this latest approach pledging your money for an airport.

Remember, nobody is talking about the several hundred million dollars it will take to tear down and haul off the existing terminals.. Those numbers are never mentioned and are not part of the costs noted above.. We believe this cost argument is the “elephant in the room", not the $20,000,000 baggage system. Get involved, it’s your money!!!

  6. This is all about FUTURE incompetence and cost overruns.
How much taxpayer money has been spent SO FAR on this fiasco, and where has it come from?
By the times these clowns are much farther along, they'll be selling off city property.
Just be sure THE streetcar is first to go!

  7. KCMO has had a great year of failures. Failed infrastructure, airport proposal, storm runoff, street snow removal, go bond projects, affordable housing, water department, fair weather toy train, sports teams reducing crime, and the list goes on.
On the bright side success is making the top 6 most dangerous city and record handouts to developers.
KCMO is definitely on its way to becoming a vibrant world class town.

  11. Lack of leadership, lack of HONEST and KNOWLEDGEABLE leadership. Fire the city manager. Fire Troy Schulte. It really is as simple as that. The council is muddled with both detail and lack of complete information. Big picture? The city manager is responsible for directing and leading departmental staff to create and advance options on any topic to the council for a vote. It is so apparent, the council should have had more information and better options on the terminal issue. How can the city manager defend the crazy “no bid”, then crazy “RFP” process that created all this mess? The city manager has NOT served the council well. He has never managed a big city or lived in a big city other than KC. So, he was promoted from the finance department. So, he is an enthusiastic guy from Iowa who has always wanted to the be a city manager. Well, it’s not working out. He should learn on the job someplace else. Fire him and his teddy bear persona, because he is “knowingly using” that persona to charm and manipulate every single council member Fire him, golden parachute and all. Cut your losses. Get rid of him. It really is that simple. Really it is.

  13. Clay, if you make a public statement that you will fire the city manager I will take two of your yard signs and write a nice size legal size check if you tell me the maximum personal amount..?

  14. I thought clay just wants to add a commuter rail station to the proposed 4 billion disaster. folks just too busy simply going to work and feeding their family to pay attention to this slo motion disaster.
Not only does that figure not include ripping down the other two terminals, The whole Rest of the site is still surface parking, for 39gates, how much parking you need. That the Kc Star has been complicit in this mess is obscene.

  15. You drive into a cavern between the parking garage and the terminal. SOM’s big glass facade giving a view of the parking garage. They should be embarrassed. That is not a spectacular airport worth that amount of money.

    ReplyDelete
  16. SOM was founded in 1936, Anyone at SOM with skill is dead.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The initial SOM KCI airport renderings were very much like other airport designs by SOM, Google around you will see as much. That original rendering with a fountain was not wholly unique to KC. SOM has put that same floor to ceiling fountain in other airports.
