KANSAS CITY METAPHOR OF THE MOMENT: INFRASTRUCTURE FAIL AND DEFERRED MAINTENANCE SHUT DOWN 12TH & OAK!!!

Early this morning our blog community broke news about the Courthouse water main break and ensuing power FAIL that also shut down City Hall.

Local news quickly caught up and the aftermath has been embarrassing for office holders hoping to ramp up their reelection efforts.

KC City Hall and Jackson County Courthouse closed, leaving some residents frustrated

The Downtown Courthouse is closed again on Friday and City Hall is trying to reconnect power tonight.

Accordingly . . .

More than any other news item this week, 12th & Oak suffering a surprise shut down after infrastructure collapse exemplifies misplaced local government priorities and mismanagement.

The reality is that conditions have been dangerous for workers inside this building for years. The Courthouse is filled with asbestos that juries have ruled played a significant role in the death of workers. On the other side of the street, City Hall employees are constantly injured and inconvenienced because of disrepair and dangerous working conditions.

Again . . .

WHILST CITY HALL AND JACKSON COUNTY POLITICOS OFFER TAX BREAKS AND STARTUP CASH TO DEVELOPER SCHEMES THEIR OWN BUILDINGS CRUMBLE!!!

Today an AWESOME TKC READER sent a quick note of even more evidence to back up this thesis . . .

Nevertheless, as the election silly season continues most of the conversation will be focused on how politicos can give away even more taxpayer cash to special interests rather than working to improve their own house and neighborhoods across KCMO.

Developing . . .

  1. Maybe those 25 million tourists can kick in a few more bucks to help keep the lights on at City Hall. It would be greatly appreciated!

    1. ^^^ Not going to happen. Most of them are just passing through on the highway.

    2. You think it's just about developer stuff. The misdirection goes even further than that. I've noticed that half of the candidates for mayor act like they're running against Donald Trump. It's ridiculous. People at the forums want to talk about trash pickup and the candidates are offering quotes about the damn Mueller probe.

  2. Totally know that answer here: More streetcar!

  5. City Hall will only notice water main breaks if one shorts out the streetcar.

  6. Actually, to have "deferred maintenance", you have to actually have an interest in taking care of what you own and have a plan to inspect, repair, maintain, and improve it.
There's nothing resembling anything like that with KCMO government.
    Instead, it consists of:
    Big Big grandiose announcements.
    Projects over-budget and delayed.
No accountability for performance or results.
Racing to the next Big Big announcement.
The whole place has been falling down for decades.
    It never changes.

  7. I wouldn't say it was a metaphor, just a very real example of how city hall is failing to really deal with the problems that are going on in the city. The same kind of infrastructure problems are going on all over KCMO. Look at the streets and their condition. Potholes all across the city and residents are complaining loudly but no Solutions from anyone in charge. In fact I heard them say that it was just too cold to fix them. But it's a little bit warmer today and I haven't seen any progress on some of the bigger potholes in my area. It's the same thing over and over we have money to give away for hotels and other tourist attractions but nothing for the streets and neighborhoods were people live. In the Northland we see that they don't even have sidewalks in some parts of the city. And that's the one part where I will agree with some readers on this blog. You have the mayor and all the candidates talking about affordable housing which is really just another tax increase. So far we don't get much for our money.

  10. "The reality is that conditions have been dangerous for workers inside this building for years," opined the blogger, without any evidence to back the statement up.

"City Hall employees are constantly injured and inconvenienced because of disrepair and dangerous working conditions," opined the blogger, without any evidence to back the statement up.

Also note the blogger uses the term infrastructure like he knows what it means.

But he doesn't, as infrastructure refers "the fundamental facilities and systems serving a country, city, or other area, including the services and facilities necessary for its economy to function."

    Pity the ignorant blogger.

  11. Why should we offer any solutions, nobody listens at shitty hall. It’s all about what bow tie the clown sLIE’s pipe dreams are, we’re nothing more than a money source for his ego.

10:16 lets hear your solutions, c’mon, I got all night.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

But there's no doubt he just throws shit out there without anything to back it up and you guys lap it up like kittens around a milk bowl.

  16. KCMO POLITICAL LOGIC (OR LACK THEREOF)

KCI was opened in 1972, and local officials have been trying to tear it down for 10 years or more. They say it's outdated, inefficient, and an embarrassment to the city. These people have been playing the no-win game of "keeping up with the Joneses."

By contrast, KCMO City Hall was completed in 1937, and I haven't heard any public discussion about the need to demolish it. Apparently, it continues to serve the needs of the city in a satisfactory manner. Imagine that!

  17. City Hall shut down today because of rotted out pipes.

Sly's henchman can attack this blog and everyone on it but it doesn't change the fact they've let most of this city decay because of their mismanagement.

  18. there is more than 1 kind of asbestos. The really nasty stuff was not sourced in United States but Europe, i believe. That does not mean that some did not make it to US market, but to assume the really nasty stuff is installed is also not a good assumption.
