BAD COMPANY: KCMO & STL GOING BROKE

Our favorite number crunchers break down the fading financial fortunes of the biggest towns in Missouri that both confront increasing economic difficulty thanks to their governance or lack thereof . . .

Kansas City and St. Louis Increasingly in Debt

In June 2013, the Show-Me Institute published a paper comparing St. Louis and Kansas City's expenses with six peer cities. One of the expenditures compared was debt service per capita. For Missouri's two biggest cities, debt was high then and has only gotten higher since.

  1. It's a race between KCMO and St. Louis to see which one becomes the second bankrupt city in the nation. KCMO made the top 6 in murders last year so they might as well improve that ranking on reaching bankruptcy.

  2. "city leaders need to focus on long term financial sustainability and stop buying expensive municipal baubles on taxpayer credit"

  4. I'm sure another $250 million for a streetcar extension, a $4 billion airport, and some sort of "affordable" housing slush fund will help all this

  6. How many of those cities being compared to KC and St. Louis have an earnings tax? If the earnings tax is such a great thing, shouldn't we be in the best shape when compared with this group?

  8. “The Cordish folks deserve a lot of credit proving the downtown market could support high end residential development. That was an unproven market.

“Everybody was saying you’ll never get more than a dollar per square foot…By golly, we’ve doubled the rents in downtown."

  9. NO! Not broke?! You don't say?! See what happens when you hire city managers from - Iowa? (LMAO!) How about finally spending some money wisely and terminating the city manager WITH his golden parachute? Please! just go ahead and pay him to go away! And then hire a city manager who has previously managed a large city? Duh! What a concept. Thinking, working and hiring experts with a long resume of experience in OTHER cities and bring all that expertise to our fair city? Meh, that’s too smart. Never mind.
