TKC MUST READ!!! KCPD CHIEF WARNS KANSAS CITY AGAINST RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA USE!!! HOWEVER, WILL CONT'D WEED CRACKDOWN BETRAY POLICE 'COMMUNITY OUTREACH' EFFORTS?!?

As the holiday season grows increasingly stressful and locals engage in festivities of all sorts, Kansas City's top cop offers a stern warning.

Checkit:

KCPD Chief's Blog: Missouri's new medical marijuana law and KCPD

Money line and 1st word belongs to this dedicated leader of local 1st responders:

"Because criminal laws about recreational marijuana use have not changed, neither will our enforcement. The members of the Kansas City Missouri Police Department take an oath to enforce state statutes. Until laws change, we will conduct business in accordance with our oath and the laws of this state. For felony-level marijuana possession cases (35 or more grams), we will continue to submit case files to all the county prosecutors’ offices in Kansas City, depending on where the offense took place: Clay, Platte, Jackson and Cass.

"Most misdemeanor-level cases will continue to be submitted to city prosecutors. While the possession of 35 grams of marijuana or less carries a fine of just $25, it is still a misdemeanor and will be noted as such on an individual’s criminal record. The passage of Missouri’s medical marijuana law in no way changes that. It does, however, raise many other questions regarding firearms, employment and more that are beyond law enforcement."

First, a TKC reality check . . .

- Stoners smoke weed in public and at most parties in Kansas City. Marijuana is more widely available than bubble gum. If there is a legal prohibition against weed, the impact has been completely ineffective and almost impossible to calculate.

- The recent Missouri weed vote isn't as big of a deal as the Jackson County Prosecutor declaring that she wasn't going to charge small time weed possession any longer.

- To be fair, the Chief's crackdown is important because people still have to worry about their job and a weed arrest, even without a conviction has the potential to mess with a person's insurance costs, gun rights and employment opportunities.

Nevertheless . . .

THERE'S A CONTRADICTION IN THIS KCPD STATEMENT!!!

THE STERN CRACKDOWN WARNING BETRAYS PROMISES OF "COMMUNITY OUTREACH" POLICING GIVEN PUBLIC SENTIMENT AGAINST POINTLESS MARIJUANA PROHIBITION!!!

REALITY: MOST KANSAS CITY RESIDENTS REJECT MARIJUANA LAW!!!

The arc of history is on the side of legalization and what this missive really points out is a need to set federal policy on this front given so many public officials offering confusing guidance on the topic.

Of course TKC advises AGAINST breaking any law but there is no denying that these regulations are in flux and seem inconsistent to rational and objective observers.

What's most disappointing: Kansas City violent crime still ranks among the highest in the nation and this marijuana debate reveals KCPD leadership out of step with residents when it comes to policing priorities despite good intentions to seek greater partnership with neighborhoods.

Recent voting in Missouri and statements from the prosecutor reveal that Kansas City voters oppose draconian enforcement of current marijuana laws and instead want greater access for alternative medical therapies or simply don't want to waste resources on the prosecution of what has become a common American pastime.

Meanwhile, this oddly severe KCPD statement depicts a stubborn and outdated worldview that's stuck adhering to decrepit policy and chasing petty junkies while far greater problems confront Kansas City.

  1. I think there's a "wink" here from the new chief. Even he is aware that a $25 fine isn't going to dissuade many people.

      Very droll TKC.

  2. Bigger problems than weed?

    OF COURSE!!

But then again, KCPD doesn't have any authority to go after opioid manufactures and drug companies flooding their garbage into KC and all of the surrounding communities.

  3. Well, he's correct. Until the State and the City abandon marijuanna prohibition they are bound by the law to enforce them.

The Chief was also correct in his comments about the Federal prohibition of firearms if you're user of illegal drugs. All he's doing is reminding people as this is beyond his control one way or another.

Most employers are going to fire your ass if they find out you're using, period. Whether or not you're legal with it or not is immaterial.

  5. If the prosecutor can independently decide to not enforce laws that are on the books, why can't she decide to enforce laws that are not on the books?

  6. It’s ok to be an alcoholic drunk to corporate America but damn you if you smoke a bowl on the weekends while in your home.

  7. Drunk or stoned same thing both are fucked up

  8. The KCPD "community outreach" efforts are focused on a part of town where the drugs are likely to be just a bit "harder" than pot.
And "the community" still 'aint talking, so there's not much result anyway.
The cold temperatures are helping to keep people off the streets, so at least the homicide rate is down.
Guess Lezak and the other television weather people are more effective than the Justus all-year anti-crime dog-and-pony show.

  9. Just because Jean Petersucker Baker isn’t going to prosecute weed offenses doesn’t mean weed is legal. Jean Petersucker Baker doesn’t prosecute murder either but it is still not legal either.

  10. KCPD can barely handle their calls for service. They aren't looking for weed.

  11. I support the police.

I think they're trying to help people with this notice. You don't want this junk on your record.

Weed is for stoners. You definitely want more out of life than it offers.

  13. get out of here with that bullshit

what is the local murder count at?

    OH NO WEED SMOKERS

  14. I like the new Chief. He is very smart and very willing to work with the community, but he's wrong about this and should reverse direction. It will be legal very soon and persecuting people because of it seems harmful in the meantime.
