TKC BREAKING NEWS!!!! NEWSIE HOT MIC COMMENTS AFTER DEADLY TRAFFIC TRAGEDY INFURIATES KANSAS CITY!!!

A deadly traffic tragedy in Blue Springs last night sparks in even more heartache and furious condemnation of TV news decorum inadvertently broadcast to viewers watching the horrific situation unfold.

To wit . . .

LAST NIGHT KSHB SCRAMBLED TO APOLOGIZE FOR INSENSITIVE COMMENTS THEY INADVERTENTLY BROADCAST BUT WERE QUICK TO THROW ANOTHER NEWSIE UNDER THE BUS!!!

A look at some of the outrage . . .

"The absolute worst reporting and handling of a tragic story. Horrible questions and coverage. Really really low."

"That was the worst reporting I’ve ever seen..... absolutely horrible. I feel they owe that family an apology. I’m absolutely saddened for this family and to handle the reporting in that matter was nothing but disrespectful."

"The laughing in that clip was disgusting."

Here's the sitch according to a few sources and local TV station insiders . . .

During a live broadcast a TV newsie was joking with an officer at the scene and their not-so-witty banter could be heard by the live audience.

Here's the tricky party . . . The flirty tittering belonged to a reporter for another station and was picked up by 41 Action News.

Accordingly, KSHB was the first to apologize for the incident but also OUTED the reporter in question with this statement. Here's their quote:

"The comment at the end of our live shot during the 10 p.m. newscast Saturday is regrettable, but no employee of 41 Action News laughed or made a comment in poor taste. Our microphone picked up a conversation involving another station's reporter and we deeply regret that it aired."

They didn't have to identify the source of the comments as another reporter, they merely needed to note that it wasn't their people coming through on the audio. This should be a reminder that collegial respect in KCMO is rare and small market life can be cutthroat.

Now, here's where the sitch gets even more curious . . .

Social media denizens and Kansas City insiders note that Fox4 newsie Shannon O'Brien was the only female newsie on the scene. In fairness, her report is professional and informative without a hint of giggling.

And this brings us to our Sunday journalism vs. social media vs. real life question . . .

SHOULD KANSAS CITY MEDIA NEWSIES MAINTAIN STAUNCH SOLEMNITY ON THE SCENE OF A DEADLY TRAGEDY?!?

EVEN OFF CAMERA?!?!

Remember that in real life most people give each other the benefit of the doubt during tough situations and often laugh to break tension.

Gallows humor might not go over online, despite TKC's best efforts, but people respond differently to tragedy and judgements about sharing a moment of levity long after a tragic scene has been cleared are subjective at best.

A bit of guidance from our blog community on the topic . . .

"In this day and age of Facebook live, Periscope, Snapchat etc. The mic is always hot."

You decide . . .

Comments

  1. TV viewers should expect professional behavior from news people who get paid to deliver the facts. That is not a very high standard.

    1. Fox4 must apologize for the comment along with O'Brien.

    2. I see what you're saying about breaking the tension but cackling at a deadly accident scene doesn't go over at all. Very unprofessional and something that needs to be addressed by the station.

  2. TV fans don't have any mercy and they watch with a critical eye. They don't allow on air personalities to be anything close to human. They have been given a very formalized view of the world thru TV and don't see anything else. It's like Lucy and Ricky sleeping in different beds on TV. Viewers don't want to know that what they're seeing is a formalized depiction of the world, not the real world.

    1. Yes, people can be very picky and it's often not fair. But refraining from laughter at a death scene isn't too much to ask.

  4. Any time you see a murder scene on tv you don’t have to look hard to see cops laughing, ive seen this everytime, it’s not unusual and they’re laughing at somebody or something not related to the incident, it’s a nothing burger for me but the gays over at 41 freak out over everything, see how fast they threw somebody else under the bus.

    1. Not in Blue Springs, dumbass. Not his jurisdiction. Maybe Blue Springs Mayor. This has no connection to Kansas City, except news coverage.

  14. Shannon was probably being flirty. She seems to be single. She is cute with some nice big boobies. I bet she is a lot of fun after a night of going out for a few drinks.

Shannon, call me girl. Lets go out for new years eve fun!

  15. Agreed.....doctors joke about big dicks, small dicks, nurses joke about toys up people's butts, and cops joke about dead people. Nothing burger.

  16. A newsie is responsible for what THEY contribute on-air.

The woman in question is NOT to be blamed for comments or gallows humor which another station surreptitiously captured and placed in their broadcast. I blame KSHB, if anyone.

If you've never been around police detectives at a grisly crime scene, would you be shocked to learn they use humor to deflect the depravity which they witness? They go home to their family afterwards and try to forget what they saw.

E.g. Detective arrives at a scene where a deceased victim was found with their hands bound behind their back and a shotgun blast took off the back of their head....and says to his buddy, "So we're dealing with a suicide, huh?"

  17. “Mayor Sly James is a dumbass” is something I wish would come out of local newscasters’ mouth.

  19. In the end who really cares?

  20. During 17 years in the news business, neither I nor my colleagues joked publicly about tragedy. Behind closed doors, we cracked on each other, but never at the expense of victims or their loved ones. Dark humor cuts the tension and helps cushion reporters from horrors they see on a regular basis. Just be glad they're not showing you and telling you about the grisly details of a car wreck, fire or shooting -the stark reality they witness, up close, regularly.

    1. Probably during your 17 years in news, you fucked around on your wife, did a lot of blow, and jerked off in public often.

  21. They need to start showing the photos of the shot up bodies in KCMO to show people what is covered up so much. When KC local news tells about ANOTHER shooting usually on the east side it has become business as usual like clouds in a weather forecast.

Why is KC local news so afraid to go to city hall and put a camera on the mayor or city council folk and ask what bold measures are they doing to stop the slaughter and blood on city streets. Where is the spine? Why the fear to do such? Too worried about dry humor jokes?

"Going to be cold tonight, so dont get caught without a jacket or you might get cold har har har".

  22. The news jokes about teen's dying. That is a damn shame. We need to have respect for more life. If they apologized it would send the right message.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Such meanness, are we to bring back public flogging?

    ReplyDelete
  24. WE ABSOLUTELY NEED MORE SHANNON ON THE NEWS! SHE KNOWS HERE STUFF AND SHE SEEMS LIKE DECENT PERSON.SHAME ON KSHB FOR NOT BEING MORE CAREFUL.

  25. It's Christmas, a little forgiveness is in order.
