Newsflash: Chamber Supports Silly Mayor Sly Regressive Tax On Urban Core

A not so surprising revelation from the newspaper . . . A local biz association comprised mostly of wealthy denizens of JoCo are encouraging the Mayor to continue to wage an economic war upon the lower income residents of Kansas City's urban core . . . This time disguised as an education effort that will only duplicate services already provided.

  4. ^^ That has been Slie's plan all along and has been stated on many times on TKC by the people who comment on TKC.

  5. Haven't belonged to any Chamber of Commerce for 25 years. Just a bunch of marketing types supporting every lame brained scheme some politician comes up with. Their last idiotic scheme was voted down by over 80%. Hope this one goes the same way.

  6. Pre-K programs are important and research as shown that teaching kids earlier makes them better students, but when your own School District won't back your plan, something is seriously wrong. This plan would create a slush fund managed by people selected by the Mayor and we all know how that ends up. Id rather see a state wide pre-K program created by the Missouri Department of Education and funded by Casino revenue which is suppose to be used for education anyway. Why cant we use money as it was intended?

  7. “The Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) Preschool system offers opportunities for students 6 weeks to 5 years old. The Preschool system includes Parents as Teachers Program, 4 Special Education Early Childhood locations, 3 Head Start locations, 9 Pre-Kindergarten locations and 2 Montessori locations.”

Nuff said, every grade school in kcsd has a pre k program already, why isn’t the news picking this up?

  8. The City Council and James: It's all about the process not the outcome. James wants to employ as many of this cronies who would in many cases not be working al all, regardless of their ability to do the job.

  9. "..research as shown that teaching kids earlier makes them better students." Empirical research shows that they are better when they enter kindergarten, but that advance disappears in just a few years. Just like Head Start, which of course now has eternal life at taxpayers' expense. James's pre-k idea is just another program that will show few to no improvemene, will cost a bundle and will never go away.

  10. Slie's pre-K idea needs to be immediately stopped especially since, as @8:23 stated so well, KCPS already offers what Slie is proposing.

If Slie wants something like the pre- K program he should have his city minions apply for some of the $2 billion Jeff Bezos has designated for new urban schools and early child hood education. Since Slie has already kissed Amazon's ass this should be an easy win.

  11. ^^^The advance disappears because of our failing schools which is a whole other problem. If kids do not go to a structured environment before kindergarten, they will be sent to babysitters and daycare in many situations and not really taught anything. So the money that parents spend for day care and babysitters would be better used for Pre-K programs statewide. If you are luckily enough to send your kid to a nice school district, pre-K will pay off, but if your only choice is KC Schools, not so much.

  12. Research shows pre-k has no effect and sometimes even a negative effect. It's just day care.

  13. I'm not buy a subscription to Kansas City Star because there's been no reporting on Mayor Sly James.
