Here's the latest report on one of the most deadly streets in Kansas City that actually had a great deal of "community input" during it's design phase. The result in an exceptionally deadly year for this stretch of road:
Kansas City man critically injured after struck by car on Hwy. 71
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -- A man sustained life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a car on U.S. Highway 71. Edwin Templeton was hit sometime before 6:30 a.m. Monday while crossing Truman Road. Templeton was coming to work at Heartland Center for Behavioral Change.
I've only ever driven that road, not walked near or across it. Unfortunately, stoplights only work if people are paying attention. My personal observation would be 90% of drivers going through these stoplights have their faces buried in their phones. Its ridiculous. Cars weaving, too slow, too fast, sudden merges, all on their phones with No awareness of what is around them.

ReplyDeleteHighway 71...who would have guessed
ReplyDeleteThis is Cleaver's doing. One of the biggest mistakes in the last 50 years of KC was not allowing 71 to be part of I-49 for some "community" argument or something...despite interstates not breaking up the community in JoCo, the northland, independence...and helping development. Instead we have the most deadly and inconvenient stretch of road in the entire metro area.
Rename 71 to Cleaver and give us 47th street back. Fuck that guy
I'm confused - was he on 71 Highway or on Truman Road?
ReplyDeleteThere is no intersection of the two, Truman (15th) is surface-level, while 71 Hwy is elevated from just north of 12th to well south of 17th.
While I agree that traffic on both 71 and Truman can be a nightmare, and the State and City should immediately elevate 55th and 59th to get rid of those stupid traffic lights, calling this tragedy a death on the "Highway of Death" if it happened on Truman Road is the equivalent of blaming an accident in Overland Park on KCMO's failure to repair streets.
^^^Yeah, you've gotta wonder how a person can be on Hwy. 71 and Truman Road at the same time. Spit personality maybe?
ReplyDeleteOf course, we have to keep in mind that KCTV5 is a station in another State, and therefore not very familiar with Missouri geography.
