HARD TIMES HIT WESTPORT!!! SCATHING KANSAS CITY SOCIAL MEDIA OUTRAGE AS McCOY'S & SAILOR JACK'S SHUT DOWN!!!
Liquor serving drama, ongoing violence and political beef over street privatization has seen two more important shut down's in Kansas City's oldest party district.
To wit . . .
McCOY'S CALLS IT QUITS AND SAILOR JACK'S IS KAPUT GIVEN THE TOUGHER BIZ CLIMATE IN WESTPORT THANKS TO KANSAS CITY POLITICAL GAMES AND CONTINUED VIOLENCE!!!
Confirmation from a server in Westport on FB:
"It's sad to say, but after 21 years, our beloved McCoy's will be closing Sunday December 23rd. So please please please, come drink some beer and wish us off properly!!!"
Message on the Sailor Jack's website:
To our valued guests: Sailor Jack’s is now closed
We would like you for your patronage and realize how our closing may have impacted your plans. sailor Jack’s gift certificates will be honored at Beer Kitchen or Char Bar Smoked Meats. Look for a new concept coming soon.
A few of the better reviews from social media.
First a missive about wait staff drama:
"Once again wait staff and servers get screwed by Westport. They're firing us for Christmas basically and without any notice. If this is the way they run their business, whatever they replace us with won't last long either!"
Then a juxtaposition on the tourism game:
"Westport is dead, they're closing the only places that actually have real, loyal crowds. I guess they'd rather chase that tourist money and forget about people who live in KC."
Finally, the big picture:
"Westport is becoming P&L District light."
And so . . .
ARE THESE DOUBLE SHUT DOWNS A SIGN THAT WESTPORT IS FADING AND KANSAS CITY IS TURNING AWAY FROM IT'S CLASSIC PARTY PLACE???
You decide . . .
Westport is over.
ReplyDeleteThe party is i Leawood, bitches!
In general, party districts are a bad idea. Crowding drunk people into one area and telling them "this is where you go wild" is just a recepie for disaster and it's one of the ways KCMo actually creates more violence.
Delete^^^^^^^ That's a really good point.
DeleteThe party district ideas is what's killing westport along with all of those stupid condos. It'll be a strip mall in no time.
Hahaha
DeleteNooooooooo i love crowds of drunk people
The streetcar will be the final nail in the coffin of Westport.
ReplyDeleteGood riddance, both of these places were pretty lame.
DeleteWhere as I gonna eat chicken and waffles when McCoys closes? Shit.
ReplyDeletePart of the problem is the lack of attractive women at Westport these days. Plenty of diseased bar whores that have been rode hard and put up wet but not enough hot young sluts. Need to lower the age for women to 18 to get some hot young sluts
ReplyDeleteThe big problem is millinials and blacks, they ruin everything!
ReplyDelete^^^^^^^ What about geezers? They are the worst of all. They don't buy sh*t and just sit around and complain about everything. Geezers are the worst enemy of Kansas City.
ReplyDeleteNever saw more than 3 people in Sailor Jacks. Bad concept for Westport. We need more live music not more theme bars.
ReplyDeleteHey now, these bars aren't closing!
ReplyDeleteThey're just taking a street vacation.
Westport is just a place to get a very bad STD.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I just don't get Wesport. They seem like they have a good thing going and then, before you know it. A cop gets killed or somebody shoots three people in the middle of the street. It's a funny place.
ReplyDeleteWesport was great in the early 80s when your primary problem was just other drunks. Times change and the new kids seek different entertainment. When you factor increasing violent crime (ghetto creep) it's a wonder it lasted as long as it did.
ReplyDeleteLook for other businesses in the area to follow suit.
I am not surprised that Sailor Jack's is closing, but I am surprised about McCoy's. I have been there quite a few times over the years (but not very early or very late), and it has always been busy.
ReplyDelete...GIVEN THE TOUGHER BIZ CLIMATE IN WESTPORT THANKS TO KANSAS CITY POLITICAL GAMES AND CONTINUED VIOLENCE!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's not why either of them closed, however. So what is the real reason, Brenda Starr?
^^^ Ur mom.
DeleteC'mon wildman, if you knew you might tell us. Instead you want to play tough guy when, in fact, we know when push comes to shove you back down and crawl under a table. It's okay, TKC loves you and you entertian us with your newman shtick. Keep sniffing these farts because you're a damn good time.
Who's Newman?
DeleteWestport sucks now because of the heavy police presence.
ReplyDeleteThat is why they closed.
People still go to bars?
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious!
We need an Applebee's there. THAT would help us turn westport around.
ReplyDeleteWestport is done for. Does anybody actually go there, it's just like walking into a jail. THAT is the real reason why these clubs closed.
ReplyDeleteHas anybody gone to Westport since 2000?
ReplyDeleteThe party moved to Martini Corner until the KU Crowd discovered that area too, then moved north of the River, where there's still a little life left!
KU grads please go to Leawood, that's much more your style.
Ha! Listen to these geezers talk about a place none of them has ever been! Funny! McCoy's will have another bar in there by January 31st. prime real estate. Those bars closed because they sucked. Pure and simple. You'll know when Westport is done when Kelly's, Harpo's, and Buzzard Beach close. Until then, you're just shitting yourself Tony, just like your readers!
ReplyDelete^^^^^^^^^ Absolutely agree. This is a good spot and they probably will put something there that will make even more money.
ReplyDeleteWell put 9:09!
^^^ Quit agreeing with yourself, you just make yourself look even more stupid than someone who went to kcsd, and that’s bad! Hahahahaha!
ReplyDelete7:38 Looky there, a nobody showed up again with his doesn’t make any sense comments, at least gopher boi try’s to make something out of a lost cause, you are the lost cause.
ReplyDeleteWestport has ruined itself. It used to be a fun and kind of dirty place. They want to be the P&L district.
ReplyDeleteThat plan was never going to work!
^^You don't have any idea what you're talking about whatsoever.
ReplyDelete^^^^^^^^^ Loser who is trying to win a blog fight. Good luck with that wildman, sorry your life went so so wrong.
ReplyDeleteYou know, you have to try new things in business and sometimes the old ways don't work so you MUST readjust. Westport is doing that and it is the best news for the district so far.
ReplyDeleteBring back America's Pube!
ReplyDeleteThey knew how to partay!
@9:56 glad your not handling our financial portfolio.
ReplyDeleteNeed to lure Blair Tanner from L.A. to take over and transform Westport with one of his High Quality developments. "Westwood Village East of Westport"
ReplyDeleteDamn, i'm surprised about McCoys. It's been there a while and has some really great food. Their Mac and Cheese with Chicken is one of the best things I've ever eaten. Gone there throughout the years. That is Sad. Westport was pretty alive and kicking through 2011/12. I used to go there from the 90s until like 6 years ago and places were packed on the weekends. That was a good time. Dang, that sucks
ReplyDeleteDrama Queens.
ReplyDeleteWestport isn't dead. McCoy's hasn't had good food in years and opening a fish place was just stupid. There are better food and drink options elsewhere. That is prime real estate so look for a near bar and restaurant concept very soon.
ReplyDeletePeople go to crossroads to eat and Westport or drink. Those bars weren't fun drinking spots and McCoys got away with having bad food for years. Sailor Jack's was a fish place. No one wants fish before going out.
ReplyDeleteI want my fingers to smell like tuna....
DeleteFor what it's worth (nothing!) I thought public House had good food and I liked their beer too. But to be honest,as the anti-elderly bigot notes above, I haven't been there in a couple years so maybe the place slipped. Westport is a lot better on a weekday or during cold weather ...just sayin
ReplyDelete-radish
Blacks period.............
ReplyDelete“Unfortunately, market conditions and the competitive brewery environment have made it difficult to continue.” said co-owner Mark Kelpe on Monday of McCoy’s.
ReplyDeleteHmm, no mention of KANSAS CITY POLITICAL GAMES AND CONTINUED VIOLENCE!!!
^^No, because that narrative only plays on this site.
ReplyDelete^^^^^^^^ That narrative? You mean reality?
ReplyDeleteCut all your people before Christmas, that's how much Westport really cares about you!
ReplyDeleteAgain, what is the big deal here, it's just two shitty clubs. They were some of the most unoriginal and lame in Westport.
ReplyDeleteI did like the new outdoor drinking spot from McCoy's but it's likely another business will pick it up and make it work BETTER!
That's called PROGRESS.
Thank you for covering this, I haven't seen much about it in other places. They seem to be just repeating the stuff from the websites.
ReplyDeleteDid not know about the "Street vacation" or some of the stuff about the recent violence.
Westport is a VERY dangerous place.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking they need to bring back Chili's.
ReplyDeleteThat place was SMOKIN!
RIP Westport
ReplyDeleteLove westport. It's not ending, just changing.
ReplyDeleteThe sky is not falling.
ReplyDeleteWe heard this when the Harris House closed in the same spot.
We heard the same thing after Lynn Dickeys closed. And Stanfords. And Londons, And the Hurricane. And Thristys and Blaneys.
20+ years for a bar concept is a long run. There will be a new business there soon.
^^^ Don't forget the Beaumont Club and Guitars and Cadillacs.
ReplyDeleteLone Star!
ReplyDeletewell, to be fair westport sort of has been dying since those places closed
ReplyDeleteI can tell you that Westport is dying because I haven't been there since 1989.
ReplyDeleteJust a matter of time. Increasing black attendance will inevitably result in a corresponding escalation of violence and fewer patrons willing to chance it.
ReplyDeleteLook at 18th and Vine to see the future of Westport. Crossroads after that.
My guess is that it had more to do with the landlord who was milking both of these locations for all they were worth.
ReplyDeleteTurn the area into a cargill feed lot. Seville spain plaza, running of the bulls westport all year round. All streets barricaded with gates complements. All new obstacles, intrigue, and entertainment.
ReplyDelete
