EPIC KANSAS CITY DOUBLE DIP: KCFD OVERTIME COSTS ANOTHER $16 MILLION!!!

An often repeated story and tradition that our blog community has been repeating for the past 5 years, here's the latest update from TV news who finally caught on to the ongoing City Hall controversy . . .

KSHB: Kansas City Fire Department pays $16 million in overtime for second year

Deets:

For the second year in a row, the Kansas City Fire Department reported paying $16 million in overtime.

The 2018 overtime cost was the same amount as it was in 2017, when Kansas City leaders expressed outrage and demanded change to reduce overtime expenses in the fire department.

Kansas City Councilman Scott Wagner on Tuesday said that the KCFD overtime budget has been dramatically escalating. A few years ago, it was $5 million, Wagner said. It escalated to $16 million in 2017 and remained at the same level in 2018.

Developing . . .

Couldn't we get some illegals to drive the trucks for $10 an hour?

Fire fighters have it hot in kc. Quite a gig if you can get it.

Pretty simple. The hose draggers (who are managing each other's hose more than the ones on the truck) are allowed to "cover" for each other so time off can be granted. One problem . . . the "covering" firepig is paid OT to do it.

The KCFD could have one company dedicated just to cover open spots. Regular pay, never OT, to fill in where necessary.

True day.

Yes...true day.

??

Congratulations on making no sense from beginning to end.

To many fire stations

Makes perfect sense, Local 41.

Leave it up to you to blow more smoke on the situation.

Sad thing is, this abuse of tax dollars will continue because our Politicians think they need the endorsement to win.

Hint: Local 41's endorsement is shit.

The firefighters control city hall. Watch when the fiscal year comes around to see how many city employees are laid off in order to continue to pay for the overtime at the fire department. Those city employees are who deliver city services. If you think service is bad now, just wait--it's going to get worse--if you can imagine that. No controls on the union--they're robbing us blind.

The fire boys have taken lessons from ex chief Forte.

The Wagner Solution

Raise property taxes on those who can least afford it to pay for the overtime.

This is consistent with every other aspect of everything the City manages.

This City has a severe problem in managing the business side of the operation. The council is made up of many folks who would be unemployable or would fail in the private sector. Is there a solution in sight? I doubt it. Look at Frank Whites most recent election victory...

OK. Here is the first $15 million annual savings that would be possible if we discontinued the earnings tax.

Overtime is a result of poor management. If that much overtime is needed, maybe we need to change their schedules to 8 hour days, 5 days a week and run 3 shifts 24 hours a day.

Anonymous said...

The question is why are they incurring these costs .... there are minimum staffing requirements and when people call 9-1-1 they expect public safety to show up be it a fire truck/EMT, ambulance, or police officer. IF overtime is being paid to cover minimum staffing on shifts, then the question is why are they not hiring more full time employees.

9:34 is exactly right. An assistant shift manager at a Hardee's knows how to write a weekly schedule and avoid employees getting more than 40 hours.

The e tax comment above is right too!

This is the result of our authority worshipping, "first responder" boot licking false narrative.

And what an awfully bad idea it was to dissolve MAST and have the paramedics within the fire union. This is our invoice for that.

Publish the names of the firemen who took 100 grand or more out of the city and perhaps shame will have an impact. Although they seem pretty shameless...

They ARE shameless. OT is an entitlement for the KCFD. The new "firefighters" (actual firefighting is a small fraction of their calls) learn from the older ones, so it will never change.

Sweet deal. Eat, sleep, nap, work out, run the side business, the list goes on. Left alone, the KCFD will soon be taking days off so they can work at another station . . . on OT.

This seems like a great piece for the KC star to investigate...oh that's right, they just write bullshit social justice talking points now.

Their current schedule allows them lots of time off to work other jobs, run small businesses, sell guns and sell drugs. They take time off with pay to work these side hustles and then work OT to cover their time off faking sickness or whatever. The simple fix is to put an end to all this time off. Make them work a 5 day week like everyone else.

KCFD REMAINS OUT OF CONTROL

This overtime issue has been burning out of control for years and years. It's a COMPLETE SCAM.

Mayor James and City Manager Schulte are INCOMPETENT PUSSIES who REFUSE to deal with the situation. They'd rather raise taxes on everyone, shuffle money between dedicated accounts, and keep KCMO headed for insolvency.
