TKC EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS!!! ACTUALLY, NEW KANSAS CITY AIRPORT WILL COST AT LEAST $4-BILLION AND CITY HALL AVIATION DEPT. IS TO BLAME!!!
This week tax fighters and politicos were hit with sticker shock over the price of the new airport.
Strangely absent from the discussion are so many social media boosters who had been arguing for the new single-terminal but now seem unwilling to acknowledge their willful ignorance about the realities of local construction. To his credit, Jon Stephens is now making the world a better place at Port KC and doesn't have time to answer for the mess he helped to create.
And so, locals don't really know when the airport is going to be finished or how much it's gonna cost.
Thankfully, our blog community can offer a bit of help.
BY THE TIME KANSAS CITY IS FINISHES PAYING FOR THIS HOT MESS, THE PRICE TAG WILL RISE TO AT LEAST 4-BILLION BUCKS ACCORDING TO INSIDERS!!!
The math is actually quite easy to figure out according to the RFP . . .
At the very least, Kansas City is locked into a debt service agreement of $125-million a year -- Financed over 35 years. That's actually a lot more than 4-BILLION but we're hoping a few hundred million between friends can be forgiven.
And here's where it gets worse . . .
There is absolutely no transparency on this deal thanks to the Aviation Dept. playing games with info and access to the airlines.

THE KANSAS CITY AIRPORT COMMITTEE LED BY JOLIE JUSTUS HASN'T HELD A MEETING SINCE AUGUST!!!
8/16/2018 at around 9:30 in the AM to be exact according to the City Clerk's website . . . It stands to reason that the Council lady would at least want to hold regular meetings every week given that a project worth BILLIONS is now underway.
Sadly, everyone knows this thing is stalled until after the election as costs spiral out of control and both the Aviation Dept. & Council lady Jolie Justus aren't saying much about the latest deets.

What a nightmare! The biggest construction project in KC history and Jolie is in charge. NO THANKS. If there was any reason to find a decent candidate for Mayor. THAT is it.
ReplyDeleteA remodel is starting to look better and better. They said renovating two terminals could cost an estimated $1.04 billion to $1.19 billion. So going back and doing that would be much less expensive than continuing to go down this path and ending up with something that is far less convenient or proven.
DeleteSure, Jolie deserves a lot of the blame but this is Sly's baby! HE as has been that the forefront of the effort to ram this one through before we even knew what the plan was. Just like the hotel and the streetcar extension, we pay later for such a slap shot approach development.
DeleteThe first problem is a much of worthless lawyers are in charge of this project. The second problem is if anyone looks at KC water rates what would you have expected, they are the highest. KC is one of the worst run cities in the country are this project is now going to make it a regional problem. Time for the remodel or you won't be able to afford an airline ticket.

For all their terrible decisions, starting with the secret meeting at a private club where Justus and Sly offered a no-bid contract to a company the city had already heavily subsidized to build their headquarters?
Is this maybe why so many companies and legitimate contractors refuse to do business with KCMO?

At half the cost, remodeling would be a much better alternative. But, because this is Kansas City, the remodel will make it worse than it is now, less convenient, and cost overruns will crank up the cost to the new airport price. We need Trump to come in and get this done right.

ReplyDeleteThe costs are in line with new commercial construction projects today. The new airport project will put Kansas City on the map and will make us the envy of the world. There will be shopping and restaurants, bands playing great jazz music, and an extensive art-display area. This is momentum, folks. Even if your grandkids are still paying on this and people flying through are dinged for the surcharges, it's a good deal for Kansas City. I would say rather than complain about it, you should vote for it. Once built, you can take your family out to the airport for an evening on the town and mingle with the drunk, smelly travelers from other parts of the world. Kansas City for the win!

Had the Airport commission just done it, probably looking at 1B out the door, open in 2 years, everyone think all is good. getting city involved, just raised the price since all the crap with union, minority contractors, usual political process. Glad I live in Johnson County...oh you still want us to build a world class airport in Gardner, they could use the tax base.

Then the visitors and layover crowd can travel freely and patronize the already tax payer supported entertainment boondoggles and help KCMO turn a profit. Heck you afford to throw in a new Broadway car/train bridge in and still stay under 4 billion. Or... use the unused Harlem area and the old airport to make new airport and put a tunnel under it to a new bridge over the river.
