TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! ENDURING SUPPORTERS OF FORMER JACKSON COUNTY EXEC MIKE SANDERS DECLARE HE DID NOT SNITCH!!!

FIRST on TKC we offer a strange turnabout in the debate over a pivotal moment in the life of a former elected official.

To wit . . .

DIEHARD SUPPORTERS OF MIKE SANDERS PROCLAIM THAT HE WAS NOT A SNITCH!!!

It's a curious but important protestation that reveals a new strategy in the defense of the politico.

Mike Sanders was a Kansas City power player and Missouri Democratic Party leader for years. He also served as a prosecutor before he dominated the courthouse as Jackson County Executive. Now, his defenders engage in prison talk.

And none of that is to say that they don't have a point that's worthy of consideration.

And so, because TKC is the only place for REAL ALTERNATIVE POLITICAL DISCOURSE in Kansas City, we share a slightly edited version of a recent missive sent our way defending Mike Sanders as he awaits sentencing.

Checkit:

From A MIKE SUPPORTER Insider: Sanders has never cooperated with the feds

"One can assume that the pressures on him to "compose" or concoct a good story to lessen his exposure were absolutely enormous. We can also assume that a guy who played the political game at the highest levels would have had ample opportunity to find/compose songs that would have been compelling. However, court records show that he has clearly chosen another path and has not talked or worked with the feds. Statistics show that it is exceedingly rare for a white collar offender to "take their punishment like a man," so-to-speak, rather than cooperate. They are usually a soft bunch. However, Sanders has always displayed a much harder edge to him than that and its one of the characteristics that made him so popular with the community. ASK MANY REMAINING SUPPORTERS AND REALIZE nothing has changed as he remains extraordinarily popular amongst the party faithful.

"In the grand scheme of all things political , the misuse (i.e. - failure to report) around $13,000 in local campaign funds is not that shocking or even unusual. What is unusual is that the anyone would ever be prosecuted for it. A quick perusal of politicians and their trips/gifts/honorarium shows how extremely common this kind of activity is for nearly everyone. These were all private dollars and none off it relates to any official act or action within the courthouse, the government or taxpayer money. There are many left scratching their heads as to how this issue was even pursued as a federal crime when many people, for example like the FORMERLY HIGH-PROFILE MISSOURI POLITICOS, have recently done far worse with their campaign money and escaped even an investigation. This case represents a possible sea-change in how low the bar may now be for the feds to go after local officials they are targeting, but the next council and mayor ought to be thinking very hard about those all-expense paid junkets to Europe and around the world to "study" transit and commerce."

  1. that is rough. But i think it's the wrong track to take. Mike did well touting his gainful employment in the Star article and asking for leniency in public.

However, what I think he really needs to do is admit fault and take some of the blame rather. That would be more impressive than his supporters pointing their fingers at everyone else.

    1. Prison talk is par for the course when it comes to Eastern Jackson County. It's pretty much how all of the "leaders" out there speak.

  4. When prosecutors are corrupt they will punish political opponents by hook and by crook. They will seek publicity at the expense of innocents. They will reward and protect their supporters who commit crimes. Mike Sanders has a long record of playing politics with public office. His buddy Todd Graves law firm given cover-up money to whitewash JaCo jail abuse. Report has never been made public. Obvious payoff to a disgraced former US Attorney. Did they cover-up state and federal crimes for benefit of crooked friends?

  5. Is your last sentence a question about Sanders/Todd or Jean Peters Baker?

  8. This case was more than just stretching the limits on using campaign funds. He deliberately laundered the funds so that no one could question the uses. Also there would be tax evasion since he wouldn't have paid taxes.

  9. Wow, this supporter of Sanders really misrepresents his crimes. He acts like all he did was fail to report $13,000. Sanders used campaign money to take trips to California wine country and to Las Vegas to gamble. He also used the money to pay his federal income tax. Plus, he lied about it on his campaign finance records. He personally pleaded guilty to wire fraud. As a lawyer, he would not have taken a guilty plea if he hadn't done it. As for not cooperating with the feds, if gets probation or a light sentence - that's a strong indicator that he did snitch. I bet there's some other corrupt Jackson County Dems having sleepless nights about it.

  10. Why did the writer stay anonymous if they support the dickhead? Put your fucking name on it if you think he really did nothing wrong.

  12. So they're congratulating him for failing to report public corruption, theft, etc he may have knowledge of?

  13. 10:41. Sanders and Graves were contemporaneous JaCo Prosecutor and US Attorney. Ever know a lawyer that thought they were above the law?
Friends might have immunity for any JaCo state or federal crime.
Fear not, Kraske and Helling will protect them.
