Sutton recently tweeted that an NBA Assistant General Manager is optimistic about the return of the NBA to Kansas City.

While this story is recycled from May 2018, it's a constant trick that keeps local newsies busy and offers hope of something more interesting than B-list concerts at the Sprint Center. Fact is, City Hall politicos had no idea what Mr. Sutton was tweeting about when he first pushed his theory. The reality is that 12th & Oak leaders made this promise more than a decade ago and it still hasn't materialized.

Don't hold your breath and wait for it. The Sprint Center is now in need of some serious repairs and more money from taxpayers.

ReplyDeleteWhile the Sprint Center is nice and the argument can be made that it helped launch the downtown revitalization, it was sold to the public under false pretenses: "We can get an NHL/NBA team and look who's already talking to us....the Pittsburgh Penguins want to come here!" Fast forward a decade and we are probably further away from landing a pro-team in that building than we were a decade ago. So why get us excited again for the 20th time?
Besides Seattle, Vegas and several other cities are probably well ahead of KC in the line for any NBA team. And I really don't think the NBA is in a state where it can expand. I see the NHL expanding in Canada before it chooses to expand in KC.
Long story short, don't hold your breath for any pro team coming to KC. This is just the city's way of keeping the masses' hopes up probably because they are about to ask for tax dollars to renovate the building in the next few years with no guarantees of any pro team relocating here. We've heard this story repeatedly for 10+ years. And no pro team in sight.

Small town city = small town market = not enough money to support an nba team, besides, the coloreds can’t go because tickets will be way too expensive and they be the ones that want a basketball team to begin with.
