Recently, images and video of a Kansas City woman walking around Prospect Ave. naked have caused a viral social media sensation.
There's video of people laughing, pointing out the public curiosity and pictures getting way too up close & personal.
Make no mistake, this content was forwarded more actively and enthusiastically than any local news story this week and earned HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF VIEWS, SHARES AND LIKES. A look through some of content reveals very few efforts to offer any help to the local woman who is obviously confronting desperate circumstances.
In fact, the only message that stands out comes from one of the most prolific anti-crime activists in Kansas City. Alonzo Washington encouraged his community of followers to reach out and make contact with the woman or DM him her name in order to get her the help she needs.

And so, we can talk about the power of social media to engage, report and evoke change but the reality is that for most, social media is nothing more than the latest outlet to partake in human misery as a form of entertainment rather than share any useful information.

Saw this and thought pretty much the same thing. It's the same problem with fight videos or videos of disasters. Internet sites basically have to throttle that footage or people would just sit around and watch it all day. Was really amazed to see some even some people I have a lot of respect for basically just pointing and laughing instead or realizing that this woman has some real problems.

DeleteI think the same can be said of the guy on the 4 wheeler early this year. People just took that like a big joke without seeing that he was obviously messed up on some substance. In that instance he was running from the cops, here, it doesn't look like anybody is coming to save this woman.

ReplyDelete1. If I'm on Prospect, I do not want to stop or get out of my car, chances of serious violence against me are too high.
2. Regardless of location, she's clearly on drugs. In this situation, chance of things going south (assault, accusation when police do get there, communicable disease) are simply too high (no pun intended). Good Samaritan laws would not apply in this situation.
3. Chances are she has lost the ability to communicate in this situation, and probably not going to respond in any meaningful way.
Those three things would also apply in areas where meth is present and if it was a white chick walking down the street.
@8:53, not a chance. Bipolar makes people do weird shit, but not this. Bipolar events are generally violence. This is drugs, crack or more likely bath salts. It is not an underlying mental issue, its the psychological effects of drugs.
