Kansas City Sunday Contemplation: Can Congressman Cleaver Save The Planet??? Or Is 'Green Economy' Another Waste Of Cash???

Recently, the EPA held listening sessions in Kansas City regarding the Clean Power Act that could soon go the way of the dodo and the local response was actually quite enthusiastic. It seems there are quite a few locals committed to sustainability and encouraging public partnerships that benefit the environment.

Remember that KCMO was on the receiving end of a great deal of cash from the Prez Obama Administration for a "green impact zone" that, like most government efforts, offered some press conference highlights and a reason to at least have a conversation about local impact on the environment. However, the previous administration also had a great many FAILED efforts to champion the eco-economy. Example: The embarrassing Smith Electric Vehicles that couldn't sustain their own balance sheet.

Nevertheless, Kansas City's leading elected official continues his advocacy for the new green economy with his latest shout out to constituents. Take a look what Congressman Cleaver has to say along with a highlight that seems appropriate for Sunday.

EC from DC Newsletter: Am I Asking for Too Much?

I had the pleasure of joining experts from the Environmental Protection Agency a few weeks ago during a Green For All hearing in Kansas City, Missouri. The panel was traveling across the country to discuss the importance of clean energy.

They talked about the critical need for a Clean Power Plan. President Barack Obama revealed the Clean Power Plan to the world in 2015. Now, the Trump administration would rather jeopardize America’s global leadership and public health by moving backwards. The EPA, now under the environmentally-insensitive leadership of Scott Pruitt, seeks to undermine our nation’s top scientists and the EPA’s legal obligation by proposing the repeal of the Clean Power Plan. If this happens, it will be something America will deeply regret.

Not only is this a health issue, but this is a theological issue for me...the earth and everything in it is the LORD's. We are just visitors. Protecting and taking care of the earth is the least we can do to thank the Creator.

We sometimes forget about the economical aspect of a healthier world. Someone has to build, manufacture and design green equipment. There are jobs to be had here. Sustainability is the most economic expansive thing at this moment. There is a new era awaiting us if we understand that there can be economic development and sustainability in coexistence.

As a parent and grandfather, I cannot help but think of the environmental consequences that repealing the Clean Power Plan will have on children. I just want my grandchildren to be able to breathe. Am I asking for too much?

Warmly,

Emanuel Cleaver, II
Member of Congress

Accordingly . . .

We ask our blog community if this effort to preserve a legacy of the Prez Obama Administration is an efficient use of local environmental political capital or will the money go up in smoke???

    1. The green economy powers jobs and provides a vital platform for KC to rise to the national stage. We should definitely support more sustainability projects and keep our momentum going!

  2. Again, this is something that private industry can do better. If it really is profitable and will provide jobs then business will supply the capital, not reason for taxpayers to take on the burden.

  3. The next time Cleaver flies back to Kansas City from Washington DC, make him take a glider.

China has 60+ coal fired power plants under construction or planned. India has nearly that many. Unless we can figure out how to keep the CO2 and particulate matter over their air space, and not let it drift over other countries, strict adherence to a clean power regimen is a mug's game. It would be economic suicide for the US to require expensive wind and solar energy in place of much cheaper natural gas and, where necessary, coal.

That is not to say that we should not continue research into "green" energy sources. Whoever figures out how to produce energy efficiently from other than fossil fuels, and provide it reliably and cheaply to end users, will become quite rich.

If Carwash truly believes, as he says:"...the earth and everything in it is the Lord's. We are just visitors." Then, he should revisit the unpaid loan funds back to the Lord's lenders, who are the Lord's taxpayers, and who have heard enough crap from one of the Lord's biggest blowhard hypocrites.

  10. THE CONGRESSMAN CARWASH WAY

A better use of taxpayer's funds would be to pay for Pakistani nationals to NOT perform information technology services in my Congressional offices, while allowing them illegal access to Congressional servers.

And while you're paying these shady characters with public funds for performing no work, make sure that they're the same group who were conducting illegal activities with disgraced DNC Chair/Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Hey, lets work on something local Congressman, that you might be able to address. The LORD is worried about the Plaza going the "way of the DoDo bird".

Maybe you should stop worrying about 1/10th of a degree change in ocean temperature, which, who the fuck knows if it is bad or not and get those "skolars" off of the Plaza. They are fuckin it up six ways from Sunday. The Lord would like it, if his KC Citizens could show up and contribute to the economy and spend money on the Plaza, without Treyvon stealing their car, raping their daughters and killing innocent bystanders in Drive Bys.

Let's fix some shit here at home before you run off to save the fuckin whales dumbass.
