TKC QUESTION: WILL MORE BOOZE SAVE KANSAS CITY 18TH & VINE DISTRICT?!?!

Smarter TKC readers have been talking about this one . . . But this write-up offers an important update on proposed changes . . .

Fox4: Proposal could strip 18th and Vine churches of right to block nearby KC businesses’ liquor licenses

Deets:

"The plan to redevelop Kansas City’s 18th and Vine Historic Jazz District could pit people who enjoy wine and spirits against followers of the Holy Spirit.

"The current ordinance says any business that wants to engage in retail sales-by-drink liquor has to get approval from any church or school within 300 feet of it . . . Worried the ordinance is hindering development at 18th and Vine , Kansas City's Alcoholic Beverage Advisory Group will consider a proposal Monday to take away churches and schools say in surrounding liquor licenses in the district."

Given that this project has garnered $100-million worth of investment over the years - A boozy kick-start isn't a horrible idea but could offer increased complications which already confront dangerous entertainment districts throughout the KCMO.

Developing . . .

  1. They are crazy if they think that is the problem with 18th & Vine.

    1. More liquor is a better idea than more stupid museums that very few people visit. While I agree that security becomes a bigger concern if 18th & Vine becomes another entertainment district, that was how it rose to prominence in the first place. Sorry to the ministers, there's money to be made selling drinks and music. KC needs to make this area profitable more than anything else.

  2. Always said, people like liquor(alcohol) and bullets. They go hand & hand. Can always use alcohol for a flesh wound. Invest in brewery & ammunition stocks.

  3. For the most part Jazz music is listened to and supported by whites. They do patronize downtown Jazz clubs, but whites do not want to go that far into the rough part of town to listen to music.

  4. Assjamz and alcohol are a great combo...... this should help the body count rise even faster! Lmao!

  5. Museums are not stupid! There are people out there that don't like to drink and walk around with putrid pickle breath and act obnoxious like mindless drinkers do.

Putting more alcohol in that area is asking for trouble, just like they are talking about doing at Armour and Troost, and will not make it financially!

Oh and museums in this city seem to do way better than some of the bars that sit empty in midtown and downtown.

18th and vine did rise to prominence and had it's hey day, but now it's a has been area!

  6. Come on, 11:10. Your new moniker needs to be Putrid Pickle Breath! Takes the same amount of time to sign into posting.

Whites don't feel safe going to 18th & Vine. So it is failing, and no amount of additional subsidy will fix that. Just.Stop.Funding.

Face it, 18th & Vine did not prove to be "transformative"!

Evena if Clay Chastain built gondolas to fly like drones, from the end of Toy Train I's line at Union Station, or from Power and Light, (to take the urban yutes home at night for free, since they don't have a credit card and thus can't call Uber), 18th & Vine is a failed experiment.

And even if we abolished alcohol there, entirely, so "No More Putrid Pickle Breath" was the law of the land, it won't succeed.

No tweaking necessary, re 300 feet, or 30 feet, or dropping folks in by gondola from 300 feet. We're done here.

Besides, more bars at 18th & Vine...think about it. Like Westport, would we then privatize THOSE sidewalks too???!!!!

  7. More places serving Colt .45 malt liquor will not take care of the problem. Nice try.

  8. Once again, if you want to save 18th &Vine, close all Bars in town except those in the 18th & Vine District at Midnight and keep the 18th & Vine Bars open till 3 or 4 am.(Or perhaps let them run 24/7.)

This draws the late-night crowds to the District and makes morning Trash Collection easier for the KCPD and Coroner.

  9. More alcohol is only part of the solution. The would need to be able to use their EBT cards to buy it.

  12. It would help us get to 200 homicides this year. It’s a really good idea

  13. I like this idea because then Westport will be fun again. The thugs that invade Westport to carry guns and kill off duty cops will have a place to go gather and have a clear unobstructed line of fire at the other thugs. Westport will not need to privatize the sidewalks and the NAACP will be happy too.
    Win-Win solution!

What do you mean there isn't one! That's just racist.
