Metro area mall headed for a foreclosure sale as owner faces default on $200M loan

Independence Center is scheduled for a Feb. 16 foreclosure sale as its owner, Simon Property Group, faces default on its $200 million loan for the property, according to information in a report by Trepp, a firm that researches commercial mortgage-backed securities. The 1 million-square-foot enclosed mall at 18801 E.

  6. Building all that subsidized retail just south of it by the city of Independence sure didn't help.
    Now the mall can be left to slowly empty and die and a brand new "developer" can swoop in, tear it down, and develop it with...
    tax breaks, tax exemptions, TIFs, CIDs, and whatever else the Missouri legislature can invent to screw the taxpayers and create yet another "public/private partnership" where the public gets all the risk and the "investors" take all the profits.
