TKC SATURDAY NIGHT PLAYLIST!!! LOCAL CHEAPSKATE REMINDER: TIP SERVERS AT KANSAS CITY RESTAURANT WEEK!!!

Tonight we celebrate a Kansas City cold weather foodie tradition and a note about etiquette from one of the many hard working denizens of our blog community.

Here's the word . . .

"TKC, really appreciated that skepticism that you and your blog commenters have given KC Restaurant Week. It's one of the worst events of the year for people forced to work the decent sized crowds. What I find most repugnant is how so many people think that the price includes tip and they don't bother to give their servers anything for hours upon hours of attention. Some of the greediest pigs in Kansas City just casually expect us to wait hand and foot on them for absolutely nothing in return. Sure, by boss might be getting some more cash from this event but it's just another working night for me with almost NO TIPS. I think KCRW brings out the worst in people, that's what I've seen so far from these housewives out on the town and their fat lawyer spouses with wandering eyes. So if you could remind the more generous people who read your blog to please remember that the servers aren't getting a cut of the ticket prices, that would be great. Thanks!"

And there you have it . . .

KANSAS CITY FOODIE FESTIVALS PRETTY MUCH FINANCIALLY RAPE WORKERS!!! AND ONLY YOU CAN EVEN THE SCORE!!!

And all of this inspires tonight's playlist . . .

A song for frustrated servers . . .

Song for KCMO class disparity . . .

The beat goes on . . .

So there it is, hopefully more for the morning update, please tip your waitresses!!!

As always, thanks for reading this week and have a safe and fun Saturday night!!!

Or, you could save yourself 80 bucks and just pick up some fancy take out food for your family that's ungrateful anyway.

    1. Sounds bad on all sides. I did notice a bigger crowd this year and that's good for business. About the server complaints. Sorry honey, that's what happens when you major in theater production arts.

    2. If they only knew about the deep, deep discounting that goes into the food. They couldn't give the tickets away. Just a safety warning, please use caution with the shell fish.

  2. Time to maybe join the rest of the developed world and require the owners to actually pay their workers?

Would make dining out a little more relaxing to not have to fight off a server who wants to turn the table every time you lay your goddamned fork down.

    1. Good point. Same goes for the ones who ask “how does everything taste?” before you take the first bite.

  3. Look, I'll decide how much I think you've earned and you just busy your pretty little heads making sure you are reporting those taxable earnings and maybe giving a little to Sancho in the kitchen who's actualy doing all the actual work.

  4. Food service is a very hard job. Dealing with customers is no fun. A good server is worth their weight in gold. Please be kind to them and don't explode if you have a problem with the food, remember the server didn't cook it.

Servers: Please hold up your end of the deal by doing a decent job. Thank you.

  6. The quality of the server also depends on the quality of the restaurant ! Best places for food and great customer service , in m humble opinion , has been J Gilbert's , Capital Grill and the 810 Zone . Worst has been Sullivan's , Plaza 3 , Bristol's .

  15. I tip well when the service is good. When I get bad service I will go ahead and tip but the tip is a reflection of the service I got.

Interesting that Tony does this story when just last week a small group of us (6) dined at Strouds on 135th and the service was horrible. And was the point of some talk at the end of it. Two of the women who work the 135th corridor said they have noticed of late you get better service eating at the self serve buffets than you do at a full service restaurants. I myself don't eat out all that often and tend to stick to places I like where I get the kind of food and service I like. But have lot of friends and contacts and bad restaurant service seems to be something that is commented on more than I think should be. But customer service stinks in just about anything anymore.

    1. I am a server and go to school full time and it’s a struggle to pay my bills. But Dave, I would intentionally give you bad service and it would be worth it even if I got no tip. You’re a pompous fool and I bet anyone that dines with is an asswipe as well.

  16. Servers are essentially just well-dressed beggars.

  17. 6:51, if you gave people good service you wouldn't have to struggle to pay your bills. I have ate at both Fairway and Overland Park Stroud's and the wait staff at both places was terrible. But 6:51 to say you would give bad service to someone you don't even know tells me you're a lousy server who picks and chooses who will get bad service then comes on Tony's and picks on someone who tells the truth about servers just like you.

  18. The solution to the waiter or waitresses problem is to, quite simply, get a better job. Most people who wait tables view it realistically as a necessary evil to be endured, on their way to a real job.

  19. "Same goes for the ones who ask “how does everything taste?” before you take the first bite." More often, the question comes just after you have taken a bite but before you have had a chance to chew.

I regularly tip 20%, unless the server interrupts conversation at my table with a question. In which case the tip goes to 15% or even lower if it happens more than once.

6:51, it sounds like you and Dave are in full agreement. Would that everyone could see eye to eye as easily as you two.

  20. Sounds like somebody doesn't like their job -
QUIT AND GO BACK ON WELFARE, ASSHOLE!

  21. So are you saying 6:51 that you have the right to decide where you work who gets what kind of service? Let me give you a clue who ever you are pull that with me and you won't see a dime of tip or a small one plus I will rip your manager a new one. If you even have a wait job, I bet your boss would love to see that comment. I'm inclined to think you just dislike what Dave said as it's the honest truth and what I do. Everyone has the right to base the tip based on the service they get. If I have an issue with the food prep and you handle it as you should I will tip you well. If you blow me off then when I talk the manager with my food complaint I will also address your attitude and service as to why your tip was only a dollar or less.

  22. WHINE AND DINE

Who would voluntarily make a career out of waiting tables? The industry is totally screwed up.

Plenty of people still don't know "the rules" about tipping, and you can't honestly blame them, because the industry has FAILED to properly deal with the issue.

Why do you tip waitstaff at a restaurant, but not the guy who changes your vehicle's oil, the grocery cashier, or the shoe salesman? The industry is FUCKED up and refuses to properly remedy the situation.

If we're going to keep the failed practice of gratuity in place, why isn't it automatically added to the bill? What if I go to a deli, place my order at the counter, get my own drink and then when my sandwich is made they walk it out to my table? Do I tip, and how much? What if I go to Wendy's and the same thing happens, they bring my fresh fries to the table? Does anybody tip at Wendy's? In a bar, if I walk up to the bar, tell the staff what drink I want, they fill my glass behind the bar and place it on the counter, what exactly am I tipping them for? It's exactly the same process I go through at a place like QuikTrip. Should I be tipping at QuikTrip?
The restaurant/bar industry is BROKEN, and they don't care about fixing the problem.
The poster is a bitter waitstaff stuck in a broken job, throwing barbs like "these housewives out on the town and their fat lawyer spouses with wandering eyes." Geez! STFU and get a different job.
