TKC BREAKING NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY DEMOCRACY UNDER ATTACK: CITY HALL THREATENS TO OVERTURN CITYWIDE TOY TRAIN STREETCAR VOTES!!!

Last year more than 17,000 Kansas City voters demanded CITYWIDE approval before further extension of the streetcar. This week, an ordinance threatens to overturn the will of voters across KCMO.

A quick reaction to this legislation from activists . . .

"Our initiative petition past fair and square now look what they’re trying to do . . . Contact your council people and let them know you are against this!"

Here's further explanation of a controversial move that has greater implications for the municipal Democracy overall.

Further explanation . . .

Streetcar Authority, City of KCMO and the KCATA are trying to vacate your vote!

The Streetcar advocates (Streetcar Authority, KCATA ) are LOBBYING City Hall to overturn the voters decision to eliminate any streetcar expansion without a city wide public vote. We cannot let this happen. We voted for this law and we want if enforced . . .

PLEASE CALL, E-MAIL OR BOTH your City Council Representative and tell them you expect them to support the voters mandate to insist on a city wide vote before any further streetcar expansion. They cannot overturn our vote. If we vote to pass a law and our City Council ignores the voters decision and vacates the law, only anarchy can result. Elected officials must represent the majority of the people and the majority have spoken. Call / Email / or Both this week. Remind our City Council Representatives that elections are not far away and you will be watching how they represent the voters. Those of you in the Northland and on the Eastside should be the most vocal as you did the most to get the law passed. Stand up, be heard…

If we allow the City Council to nullify this election, they will nullify anything the voters pass if they don’t like it. They could establish a very dangerous precedent herein we don’t stop them. Call this week, let them know you will be watching.

  1. City hall has always hated citizen petitions. They want to do away with them. But throwing out this vote is a dangerous precedent, if they clear these voters away then they are laying the groundwork for every election to be challenged by opponents.

    1. The streetcar has only been able to move forward by twisting the Democratic process in Kansas City. They have been at war with voters from the start. The use gerrymandering and voter suppression to stay ahead of the will of the people. It is one of the most corrupt projects we've ever seen in this town's history.

    2. ^^^ Pretty sure the airport was way more corrupt. Luckily, that one is just too big for anybody to take control of, even Sly. KC has always loved to stuff ballot boxes and rip off voters, it's practically a local tradition. Why should the streetcar be any different?

As for downtown, it still looks pretty sparse after 9 o'clock and I wonder how long can KC keep paying 15 million a year for an entertainment district that doesn't create very many jobs.

  2. Don't worry, streetcar consultants will show up soon and try to thug their opinions. Can't wait till they try an council run, it'll be nice if they finally decide to answer questions in public. They may not get the same kind of pleasant reception they enjoy in the crossroads.

    1. Generally, I like what we've seen from the streetcar's starter line. I think there's a lot of negativity on this blog, but I voted for question 1 because I think KC will support streetcar transit across KC and across the metro. This form of public transit is getting the right momentum and building on to it only makes sense. Why stand in the way of that? It's better to look for ways to collaborate. We need a citywide vote for streetcar expansion in 2018. I guarantee it would pass easily!

  4. City wide it already failed twice I believe. Stret cars are dying all across america, because they are no more efficient than a bus.

  7. City wide vote needs a better salesman than just Sly. He has lied to the city far too much to be believed.

  8. If the next 3.7 mile phase gets built, it will cost 227 million dollars. The first 2.2 miles cost us 160 million, that’s almost 400 million dollars and it doesn’t go 6 miles. Just think at this rate 18 miles is going to cost more than the airport. Your damn right they’re gonna honor our vote!

  9. "Our initiative 'PAST' fair and square", said the activist.

And by "activist", we must mean...well.......you know....."teen".

  10. 6:29 is another example of people who like the streetcar but have no clue about mass transit. The streetcar is not mass transit. It is a bus on rails. Mass transit across the metro would not be streetcars, that is done via bus. Mass transit should be rapid transit, and that involves light rail not running on city streets but on rapid transit rail lines.

  11. 6:29, the current streetcar was never called a "starter line" until the people who profited from it realized they could scam us all over again. They hit on the idea of not charging a fare to boost ridership numbers and make it look like the success it is not. It is not a success unless riders find enough value to pay for rides.

I hope that whoever hit on the bright idea to establish a tax district full of mostly renters as a way to fleece taxpayers got rich too. It's legal, but still a scam.

  12. The KCEB needs to get involved and state that the city is F** up and that should stop a lot of this.

  13. "Our initiative petition past fair and square"

Was it in the same sort of pidgin English?

  15. ^^^ +1

Seems like that's a lesson that Kansas City keeps on trying to avoid learning.

  16. The KC Streetcar Drama seems desperate.
    And still smells politically.

Great for those who immediatelly profit.
Downtown commuters who'll park and ride, tourists and elderly.
And those who spend the day on it.

Too slow and a hassle for students and everyone else.

  17. Don’t worry gay sLIE and fat boy Troy have already figured these tax cuts into your ability to give them more money! Because it’s the Democrats way of keeping you broke! Seriously, that’s how they think about us, and endless supply of money for their pet projects
