NEWSFLASH!!! KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN STREETCAR FAILS IN THE ICE!!!

A tragic look at local transit "infrastructure" that doesn't seem to work.

Here's sad Winter news from the Streetcar:

RIDER ALERT: #kcstreetcar service currently suspended due to ice build up on the wires. Service continues with 2 @RideKCTransit buses. Riders may board buses at designated streetcar stops for free.

To wit . . .

TKC BLOG COMMUNITY TOLD YOU SO!!! THE TOY TRAIN FAILS IN TOUGH MIDWESTERN WEATHER BECAUSE IT'S SPANISH-MADE JUNK!!!

And so we restart our news day with the impact of bad civic decisions that STILL seek to shut out voters.

  1. Be fair. There are a lot of car crashes today, too.

I'd rather wait on the streetcar then get killed on the highway.

    1. You're in for a long wait, pal.

The thing hasn't moved all morning. And I'm pretty sure they still kick the homeless off when it's broken down. Or else it would always be full.

    2. You should also report that the bus is up and running!

  2. It's okay.

    Don't feel bad KCMo.

A bunch of other cities bought this Obama-era junk as well.

You weren't the only ones who were fooled. I'm just glad that Johnson County didn't fall for this scam. There was a rumor circulated by the newspaper that they wanted to build a streetcar along Metcalf, but that was just a ploy to rig one of the votes that also lost.

  3. ^^^^This is not Obama era; it's more Calvin Coolidge.

Interesting they never use streetcars to go around broken down buses.

  4. In a country where utilities are putting their wires underground for many reasons cities build a transportation mode that has to have above ground wires. I call that regressing myself; what's next, steam engines for all trains?

  5. No, Super Dave, the next thing will be using Mule Teams to haul the cars up the hills south of Union Station and north of the Plaza when the Streetcar Expansion is built.

This technology depends on relatively flat terrain, and has been successful in European Cities where it doesn't snow or sleet and the ground is flat. It won't be able to handle the Main Street hills in clear warm weather, either - look it up for yourself.

To call it "Spanish Junk" is unfair, it works fine where it is designed to, the problem is that the "Stable Geniuses" that brought it here bought the wrong stuff.

They will probably try burying the wires next, but of course that means the streetcars we already have will have to be adapted to run upside down, because we all know our "Very Smart" betters could never make a major mistake like that.

  6. @10:51 I started to mention mule and horse power along with being up to our knees in manure on the streets but thought would be going a little to far.

  7. This story would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic and sad.. Thanks, Sly! Money well spent!

  8. For the millions of dollars being foreceably extracted from taxpayers to fund streetcar operations you would think they would eave the money to keep the ice off the wires. Pathetic.

  9. That mule railway was called The Metropolitan Railway, and was built by Thomas Corrigan. It was a nickel a ride and was somewhat nippy on a day like today.........
Corrigan Station is a building named for him.

  10. We told you that the TOOT TOOT was a loser and the people who were pushing it were incompentent.

  11. Rapid transit metro rail lines run on power embedded in the tracks. No overhead wires, but then again, they are not streetcars. They are rapid transit lines. That's what the city should invest in, not dumbass streetcars.
