KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Online shoppers, get ready. If you live in Independence you could soon be paying a tax on online purchases made from out-of-state internet retailers. Tuesday, Independence City Council voted to put a use tax on the April ballot for voters to decide. "So many more online sales are happening.

  5. The biggest problem these small stores have is not that they can't beat price and have to collect tax. It's that they have limited selection dictated by shelf space. I don't think they can overcome that. Like Gilbert Whitney (or any other store): if they don't have the color, model, size, etc. of what you're looking for, many will offer to "ship it to your house for free" but it will take a week or more to get it plus you have to pay the taxes. We can go online and have it in two days for free and usually without tax. It's how we are. When we want it, we want it now. (BTW, big chains with brick and mortars in MO collect sales tax for orders shipped to MO even if said store is 250 miles away from your ship to address.)
