Craig Glazer: New Years Eve In Kansas City!
It's New Years Eve again this Sunday night KC! The Plaza lights, the parties, the special events and hey we have an afternoon Chiefs game featuring our future quarterback, Pat Mahomes. Joy. How things have changed over the years for this once huge holiday.
For those of us who are baby boomers or Gen Xer's its just not the same as what we enjoyed only a few years back. Our city was just crazy with private parties and hotels that had thousands in their lobby events like the Hyatt downtown which did a special event yearly hosted by Ql104's Mike Kennedy, even me a couple times....different bands with all sorts of music several large event rooms, champagne flowing, even indoor fireworks and several thousand in attendance. Sadly it was cancelled a couple years back due to expense, needing too many off duty cops which cost a fortune, hotel damage from party folks, just too big a headache for the hotel, now under new management. Now there is still the Uptown and Union Station events, but just a couple today unlike years past with all the nightclubs in Westport having lines to pay the cover to see the craziness all night. Oh the bars still open and have NYE but its just less people and doesn't seem to run as late. Why? The young folks just don't go out like they used too. Why? Other options at home, fear of DUI's, fear of violence in some areas, just fear in general. Hey its damn cold out! The older people just don't want to be out late anymore, they want a nice dinner, maybe a bit of music and time for bed even before the ball drops at mid-night. Remember Dick Clark and his NYE show for decades?
Don't get me wrong there is still a NYE and still private home parties with booze, girls, food and even some smoke I'm sure, just not as many and not going on as late. Yep what was once THE party night of the year has been downsized for sure. The changing times. Even the big name theater concerts are slight. New Years Eve week was always a biggie with comedy clubs as well, sill is going on but the names and costs to get them have dropped off with less people going out for the most part. Damn it where's Larry The Cable Guy when you need him, oh home in bed, maybe not.
Yep even Vegas and LA are not as flashy with NYE as they once were just a few years ago. I was at a major hotel in Vegas just a couple years ago for the event and boy even the big hotel dance clubs were clearing out by 1 am...sad to see. The casino floors were empty by 2am not like the all nighters of only a handful of years back.
Again don't get me wrong you can still find FOOD, FUN AND FIREWATER in KC for NYE at Westport, Power and Light, Downtown...the new Stanfords 813 on Walnut has an early comedy show...then party til 3 A.M. with the wear next to nothing contest for the hot ladies...course it will be a single digit temp night. Yikes. There will be few if any DUI checkpoints the cops know the numbers on the street are way down so they likely won't bother. Still there will be party people out there enjoying the countdown til 2018. Ah remember those NYE where you just had to get your lady alone at midnight to have that big kiss and more....still happens just a bit less I suppose.
Well get off the couch, go out, have some fun, celebrate being around for 2018 and beyond. Get dressed up and go party somewhere, have some fun and be safe. Happy New Years Kansas City! Ladies don't except your guys battle cry: "It's amateur Night."
