TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! BEHIND THE SCENES OF KANSAS CITY NEW AIRPORT MOU FAIL!!! INSIDERS REVEAL WHY MAYOR SLY'S #BETTERKCI CRASHED AND BURNED!!!

Because they don't really understand how local government works (or doesn't) lesser news outlets were surprised by yesterday's City Council vote that rejected the Edgemoor memorandum of understanding for a new Kansas City airport. Here at TKC we told our blog community that the MOU was considered illegal by most insiders yesterday morning. And then the Mayor's airport plans went down in flames.

To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY INSIDERS REVEAL UNION POLITICS AND MAYORAL AMBITIONS TRIGGERED MOU FAIL AND MBE/WBE DISCUSSION IS MOSTLY A DISTRACTION FOR CLUELESS PLEBS!!!

But first . . .

Let's take a moment to taste the bittersweet tears of Mayor Sly James regarding this busted deal. Check his twitter feed and note that he's attempting to shift the blame to the Council . . .

However . . .

LIKE IT OR NOT, THE COUNCIL IS CLEANING UP A MESS STARTED BY MAYOR SLY BY WAY OF SKETCHY FINANCING SCHEMES AND QUESTIONABLE BIDDING!!!

We've already noted that THE GOP TAX CUT BILL GUTTING PRIVATE ACTIVITY BONDS is a big part of the reason the airport MOU wasn't workable and considered illegal by most insiders. Reality: The financing that voters approved isn't going to work for reasons that are way too complicated to explain to voters who mostly like bright, shiny new toys . . . Even if they're made out of glass and plastic like the new airport.

But here's where things get fun - A word from Kansas City Insiders:

"The vote against the MOU is all about the mayoral race. Everything that will be done in 2018 will be about positioning for the mayoral race. When Mayor Sly tries to rig the election by promoting Council-member Jolie Justus, he put his development agenda at risk."

Again, our AWESOME TKC BLOG COMMUNITY BROKE THE STORY of Council Lady Jolie Justus ethics questions during the shady bidding for the new airport.

But more importantly . . . All of that talk about minority hiring was mostly smoke & mirrors.

Instead, urban core leaders and insiders inform us that LONG-SHOT MAYORAL CANDIDATE AND COUNCIL DUDE JERMAINE REED PUSHING OUT IN FRONT OF THE AIRPORT MOU offered incentive for his colleagues to smack him down along with the plan.

As far as the PHONY STORY ABOUT MBE/WBE CONCERNS . . . Edgemoor had kicked in $1-MILLION for the airport vote AND they were working with construction leader Leonard Graham and Jason Parson to make connections inside the 3rd & 5th District. Edgemoor work on minority hiring was actually a lot more credible than all of the constant promises from local companies about diversity that never happen.

Furthermore . . . The 35% MBE/WBE hiring pledge was always a bad joke and anyone who believes that it made a difference in this decision might as well watch daytime TV for the remainder of their fast food lives.

One last thing . . .

AIRPORT MOU REJECTION IS REALLY KANSAS CITY UNIONS & THE HEAVIES FLEXING THEIR MUSCLE AND PUSHING FOR BETTER TERMS!!!

Minority hiring concerns don't really concern union leaders who have a better working relationship with J.E. Dunn and other local firms over Edgemoor. This sort of explains Council dude Scott Taylor's vote along with a few others . . .

Put simply, the Kansas City Union leaders didn't like Edgemoor and now they're gone.

In the final analysis . . .

THE AIRPORT DEAL FAILED BECAUSE IT WAS SKETCHY TO BEGIN WITH AND COUNCIL MEMBERS CAN MAKE BETTER DEALS WITH UNION LEADERS AND LOCAL COMPANIES WHILST POSITIONING THEMSELVES FOR THE UPCOMING ELECTION!!!

Again, this backroom dealing is still more solid then the half-baked designs of Mayor Sly that deserve to be ripped to shreds.

And now the scoreboard . . .

Here's what this airport MOU defeat accomplishes . . .

- That promise about KCMO not paying anything for the airport: KAPUT

- Airport victory achievement for Council Lady Jolie Justus: GONE

- A plan for building a new airport according to the recent rigged vote: UP FOR GRABS!!!

And so, the dreams of #BetterKCI trolls have become a nightmare as high flying aspirations have inevitably crash landed back into a typical Kansas City hot mess.

    1. Be fair now TKC, if the Mayor can rig 2 votes for the new airport then he really does deserve that trip to Congress. Because it looks like we're going to have to go back to the drawing board on this thing.

    2. Jolie was always going to screw this one up. As for Sly, that's what he gets for hanging out in D.C. so much. He wasn't minding the store and got caught by more ambitious council members. He should have known he only had three other votes.

  2. Here is where I disagree: The airport cannot ask for money from the taxpayers or they will have to go back to to the voters. The vote was only to tear down the old airport and there's still a long way to go before we can get a new one. It looks like we're further away then we have been in years and Sly deserves all of the blame forth that. He didn't really provide much leadership in this situation and his blaming everyone else isn't the solution.

  4. Here's some data:
140 homicides so far this year in KCMO and less than 50% ever solved.
    Here're a couple facts:
KCMO has fully one-third the number of murders as New York City, which has a population over 17 times as large.
Public safety is the most basic and important responsibility of any leel of government.
    Time to get crackin', Sly.

  6. All my JOCO friends n relatives are all for a new airport...they say gosh if only KC would ask for a bi-state tax we'd do it. KCMO do it.

  7. ^^^ LOL! that sounds like a dare. JoCo will never pay for bi-state anything. They are a parasitic community.

  9. What we need is an immediate ordinance.

Recognizing that our friends at Burns and Mac after all are the best choice for the airport, the dumb public shouldn't be involved in making any decisions whatsoever, and recognizing an emergency with an accelerated effective date.

  10. What we need is an FBI investigation of the galloping corruption of the Clown Mayor Bullhorn and his bloated cadre of weirdos.

  12. If there we only some local politicians so eager to fix roads, create a standard for bureaucrat productivity, fix the sewers, remove the ice and snow and get out of the retail, bar, amusement, hotel, taxi and newspaper businesses.

  13. When you begin with things going down the wrong path, it sets up a chain reaction that is very difficult to then correct. What is clear is that politics, management mistakes, bad process, and now a mayoral election cycle are all aligning to make a mess of things.

Clearly many of the players are out of their depth by expertise, training, experience for the successful navigation of this process. Blaming the Council, who are probably not the best stewards of this process, is not really addressing that the so called "plan" was anything but fully developed, it was a financial empty box, and then the pork carve up starts, just like in the movies. Everyone is friends until it is time to divide up the loot.

It is likely to take a substantial reset, we will improve the Airport, but not until we get integrity and professionalism of approach right. It is questionable if that should even happen during the term of this Mayor, but in any case a substantial improvement must be realized. Imagine being the vendors along for this ride, and it is not near over.

It has to be pointed out, that doing things right from the beginning would have prevented much of this, now the issue is hard politicized, and an obviously high quality result is questionable at best.

  22. 6:54 you pose a interesting question. TKC seems to oppose anything that could possibly improve Kansas City. For years he has railed on the "Toy Train" and then it was the downtown hotel and now the new airport. I guess when you spend your life living off your mothers dime you have a totally different outlook.
