TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! COUNCIL LADY COALITION DEMANDS FINANCIAL DEETS FROM DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY CONVENTION HOTEL!!!

As TKC FIRST REPORTED LAST WEEK . . . Questions over the fiances of the proposed Downtown Kansas City Convention Hotel are causing controversy at City Hall.

Even better . . .

CELEBRATE THIS COALITION OF COUNCIL LADIES ASKING FOR DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY CONVENTION HOTEL ECONOMIC DEETS THIS WEEK!!!

Here's the official statement . . .

Ordinance Co-sponsors Katheryn Shields, Teresa Loar and Heather Hall will host a joint press conference Tuesday, December 5 at 1 pm to answer questions regarding their drafting of this ordinance to seek clarification, transparency and accountability for the citizens of Kansas City regarding the downtown convention hotel project.

“We are simply requesting actual documentation of the financing, the guaranteed maximum cost, the term sheet, and sources and uses for the project,” said Councilwoman Shields. “The agreement between the City and the hotel developers was voted on with the previous Council prior to the replacement of the hotel operator and lead investor. In light of the delay in closing and substitution of development principles, this Council has the obligation to verify its feasibility before investing millions of public dollars – and a one-page PowerPoint slide does not satisfy that requirement.

Councilwoman Loar expressed concern that the project will hurt the taxing jurisdictions if the financing is not confirmed prior to the city’s portion of $35 million being issued. “I am concerned for our schools, libraries and other taxing jurisdictions,” Councilwoman Loar stated. “This involves substantial tax incentives that can impact those jurisdictions.” “This ordinance is in response to over one year of requests by my colleagues and me to gain the proper confidence level in the financing of the project. My goal in every project is transparency and accountability to the citizens, said councilwoman Hall. “It is a simple matter for the proponents to provide the Council and public with clear and simple documentation.”

  3. But! Downtown won't be complete without the big hotel!

  4. Somebody needs to tell Burke to can this thing, it's not going to work. The financing just isn't there, if it was then he wouldn't be so secretive about the details.

This stops any bond issues in its tracks. No bond underwriters will issue bonds until this mess is cleared up. Thank you ladies. I guess we know who has the balls on the city council!

  12. It's really sad when then only people on the entire City Council with ANY sack are women. Bravo ladies for calling this thing out on the carpet. This is a HORRIBLE deal for KCMO and tax payers. We would be DONATING over $135 million dollars of public funds to at $322 million dollar PRIVATE project.

"Oh but it'll bring in jobs". Yeah, 2 years of construction jobs then after that, the vast majority of the people working at that hotel won't be overly high paid. Poor ROI if you ask me.

"Oh but we'll see a massive upsurge in convention business!" Oh really??? How can that be when the numbers state that fewer and fewer companies are sending their employees out of time for conventions. And places like Vegas, LA, Orlando, NY, etc get the vast majority of what's out there as far as convention business. So again, poor ROI on that front. There's no way ANYONE associated with this hotel can even begin to guarantee any significant upsurge in convention business. I'm sure there'll be a honeymoon period where the needle moves a little in the beginning. But the fact of the matter is that the convention market isn't what it was 10 to 15 years ago.

Add all that together and we have a situation where KCMO will directly fund nearly half of the project and get pennies in return. And when this thing fails, and it will (see the convention center hotel built in STL some years back), all the advocates (S'lie, Burke, JE Dunn, etc) will be long gone and enjoying their kickbacks off the deal while KCMO tax payers are left holding the bag and suffering the aftermath of the lack of return on investment and watching their tax burdens increase to makeup the shortfall created by this horribly bad deal.
