TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! MORE COMPLAINTS ATTACK SKYROCKETING KANSAS CITY STAR PRICES AMID DWINDLING SUBSCRIBERS!!!

The numbers for the Kansas City Star keep getting worse . . .

Here are a few not so fun facts . . .

Alliance for Audited Media circulation reports and a few others have transcribed . . .

- The average, paid circulation for the print version of The Star is 119,892.

That's not even a good doggie outrage post on Fakebook.

- The Star’s Sunday circulation has plunged by more than a third, and Monday to Friday circulation has dropped more than 25 percent.

Once again City Hall & Jackson County isn't getting much for their EPIC tax breaks.

- The Kansas City Star has lost nearly 200,000 Sunday subscribers in eight years.

The recent Sunday features that are slightly more interesting don't seem to be helping. Maybe because the issue is still mostly coupons that are now available online.

Now . . .

But all that is just trade mag blathering and the talking points of old codgers regarding "journalism" that everybody is getting Russian Facebook anyhoo.

Here's what's more fun . . .

CHECK THIS KICK-ASS NOTE FROM A REGULAR TKC READER REGARDING THE SOARING PRICES OF KANSAS CITY STAR SUBSCRIPTIONS!!!

"The Star tried raising my prices for next year. They sent me an invoice for about $600 for an annual subscription. I like reading the paper but not that much. I called and called and after a week I got a hold of them and they did discount the rate. I'm not sure if I'd go through that kind of trouble again."

The fact is, this is a 77-year-old-dude who sent TKC this note and my guess is that hewill continue her patronage of the newspaper for years to come but he's obviously an outlier.

And so we ask once again . . .

ARE SKYROCKETING PRICES KILLING KANSAS CITY STAR SUBSCRIPTIONS???

OR WOULD MOST LOCALS SIMPLY LOOK TO THEIR PHONE FOR INFO???

You decide . . .

  1. The star will survive. But they'll have to start charging $50,000 a year for subscriptions.

It can work. It's basically what public TV does.

  2. TIF money should have kept the prices down with that kind of subsidy. Time corporations learn about the social contract.

  3. They laid off there marketing department over three years ago. They OUTSORCEd.and you're right it cost them over two thousand subscribers. And over priced newspaper THE Monday and Tuesday blow away with the WIND.

  5. why do 120,000 people pay that much?

    (meaning $540 annually or more)

one would have to guess that they don't know they're paying that much in most cases. the spouse or business manager is perhaps just paying out of habit.

$540 is beyond the reach of most middle class people given the benefits derived.

they should cut the price to $240 immediately, imho, and keep subscribers. once subscribers drop out, they'll change their habits and never return.

  7. Since most of the Star's content is lifted straight from the internet feeds, it's a waste of time to read the paper. The Star's owners should stop publishing daily and perhaps go to a twice-weekly rag -- Sundays and Wednesdays.

  8. If you see the Star in the newspaper rack on a Sunday, their advertising emphasizes t how much the enclosed coupons can save you at the grocery store.
    Probably not a good sign!

  9. What is the difference between the KC Star and the Thrifty Nickel? The Thrifty Nickel has more news in it.

  10. $540?

    Really, every year.

That is INSANE. Can't believe anybody would do that.

  11. Their prices are too high for the quality of the product. Reprinting articles from the NY Times, Washington Post, and Associated Press is not journalism. It is merely page layout. Us old timers remember spending all afternoon after church reading the Sunday paper. Now I can do it in less than an hour. It is called the "Kansas City Star", but I don't think the editors realize that a majority of the population no longer lives in Kansas City proper. Everybody else in the suburbs seem to be the red headed step children. It is their right to to run their business in this manner. It is my right to pay no attention any more.

  12. Fun fact:: Nobody under 65 reads the paper!

  13. All I care about is my $1.00 Sunday paper at Dollar Tree for the coupons. But remember no coupons on Holidays. No coupons no paper.

  15. 3:58 nailed it. The Star's only local "journalism" is articles by Sanchez, Hoopz, et al, and pieces that are similar to what you can read in the Pitch.

  16. Now if just half those people were to cancel this next week all in Kansas City could kiss Mary, Hoopz, Helling and Rose good bye.
    Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let's sing a song of cheer again
    Happy days are here again…

  17. Tony subscribes.
It would cut his re-post % way down if he didn't.

  18. The Star's best journalists just finished an important, eye-opening 5-part series that none of you read because you only get your news from Russian bots. Turn off Rush, 3 Dolts on a Divan, Hannity, Infowhores and Breitbart. Mainstream media is a competitive, demanding field far to rigorous for low-watt bulbs such as you to understand, much less appreciate. You might try sampling it sometime, and learn something.

    1. why is it Kansas City's fault that we don't read The Star? Don't they deserve the blame for lack of salesmanship?

  19. What is senseless is why people want to fight to save the Star.

Gemma claims that The Star made repeated inappropriate solicitations and Progressively touched her without consent!!!

  22. This is what happens when all your reporters take a liberal view of every issue. Mary Sanchez was always pushing for higher min. wages of at least $15/Hour. Why is the Star still running ads for KC STAR production help on Weekends/nights,etc and only paying $9.00/Hr! Lead by example Star and pay $15-20/Hour!
A couple of years ago I believe they were only offering $7.80/Hr. BTW offer them around $300 for a one year subscription and they will take it. Get rid of your 100% liberal views and you might get some readers back.
