TKC EXCLUSIVE AND BREAKING NEWS!!! DOWNTOWN CONVENTION HOTEL FIGHT STARTS AGAIN THIS WEEK!!!

Despite press release copy and big talk in non-binding public meetings . . . The deets of the Downtown Kansas City convention hotel are still sketchy.

A few highlights . . .

- Financing deets and a term sheet are still not available to the pubic.

- Debate over catering and food contracts is STILL in play.

- The groundbreaking has been pushed back again to NEXT YEAR and there's fear of more City Hall financing of this long-delayed project.

And while the City Hall development agenda seems unstoppable . . . This pet project has always been a weak spot for civic boosters because of the secretive and sketchy financial deets which remain the source of constant hype but very few contractual disclosed to voters.

Developing . . .

  1. The problem here isn't just the secrecy, it's the financial structure overall. KC fronting the development has actually hurt the project. Any decent business isn't going to want to start off with the city's hand in the pockets of a hotel. Politicians always have a way of meddling and that's something that most companies desperately ant to avoid.

  2. For some reason, I don't really mind if we name this one after Sly James.

  3. ^^^ So you want to name it the hotel patronage?

  4. Start over with a new plan. Downtown has made even more progress since this hotel was conceived, we CAN get a better deal.

  5. Put Sky's name on it but Mike makes two million putting it together. Looks like Mike won the election, not Sly.

  9. KC just can not survive without that earnings tax.

  10. Fear fear fear we won't be as good as anyone else without a new hotel.

So let go into even more debt.

  11. Did anyone notice they snuck another $40,000,000 from the taxpayers into the deal? Now there going to get $200,000,000 in bond money backed by LCRA, the taxpayers. KCMO has the stupidest voters ever!

Sure he is getting his stinking airport now so Sly wants the taxpayers to fund this midwest white elephant.

  13. If the billionaire tax cut passes on Friday in DC there will be plenty of money for hotels. The upper middle class will take a hit and Mayor Sly James dream of making Kansas city sao Paulo Brazil will come true.

  14. Now that KCI passed, Burke will be back for more City Hall money! And the Chamber will be cheering him on!!!

  15. Just keep in mind that the "developer", Mr. Burke, is not a real estate developer or a hotelier.
How this "project" turns out makes no difference to him and whether or not it turns out to be financially sustainable is also not his concern.
The fact that most of the downtown hotels have needed taxpayer help over the years will continue to be ignored.
Mr. Burke is a development attorney and will make his money on the legal and financial transactions that have taken place and will continue as this moves along.
As usual, what's left after the transaction gang moves on to the NEXT BIG THING will become the problem of KCMO and its taxpayers.
    It never changes.

  16. Vacum cleaner convention salesmen will be able to enjoy a Cinnabon at the new airport, and then take a streetcar back to their convention hotels before maybe plunking down a couple quarters into the old Magic FIngers machine.

Sly's got a little bit of Elon Musk in him such is his futuristic vision for our town.

  17. We need a new airport. Oh wait.....we need a new hotel for those thousands of visitors we host every month.
