Missourinet: Missouri’s county jails double in population in seven years time
This not-so-fun-fact should offer some perspective on enduring Jackson County problems.
Money line:
"The length of stay of each offender is a major contributor to today’s rising jail populations in Missouri. The CSG’s research says Missourians in jail for felonies spend an average of 191 days behind bars before they’re sentenced."
Part of the problem: "The Missouri Public Defender System has been woefully underfunded and has lacked attorneys for years. Public defenders lack the time to adequately manage their cases, often leading to their clients spending additional time in jail."
Solutions include "cite and release" for lower offenses and possibly a tacit admission that the drug war is a lost cause.

We are 5% of the world's population yet have 20% of the world's inmate population. We have more people in prison than Stalin did. Perhaps it's time to do something different. End the insane, expensive, and non-winnable drug war for starters.
ReplyDeleteMean Jean Peters Baker has frozen when it comes to going to trial. Both she and her lawyers live in fear, because they know they are not the sharpest tools in the box. The criminal defense bar snickers when ever a JaxCo prosecutor walks into court. So Mean Jean has just decided to avoid going to court at all.
