Cumulus has done more to destroy the heart of American radio than any company on earth. At one tie they owned over 600 radio stations, bullied their way into the live performance business and have automated more radio stations than anyone on earth. The saddest part is tha cumulus is attempting to restructure and not getting the hell out of the business.

DeleteThat said...terrestrial radio was doomed the moment satellite radio was born. Nobody...I mean nobody listens to terrestrial radio anymore. At least any demographic that is attractive to advertisers.
ReplyDeleteSatellite radio will become obsolete as cars become more internet capable.
ReplyDeleteOr as Matt Lauer refers to them "Cum Media". I'd include Bill O'Reilly, Charlie Rose, Twitter In Chief etc. etc. so take you're pick. Will this mean Dana won't be working for "Cum" anymore?
ReplyDeleteThe worst thing to ever happen to radio for the public was deregulation in the 90s. Used to be a law the most stations a company could own was six. After deregulation Cumulas, Entercom, and Clear Channel took over the country. Every city now has the same cookie-cutter stations that all suck. Gone are stations like 105.9 the Laser out of Lawrence. Gone are the cool stations all over the country. I know I never listen anymore to radio. Satellite and Pandora for me.

ReplyDeletesometimes they're good but their programming is erratic and you don't know what you're going to get when you tune in.
ReplyDeleteother channels are perhaps lower quality, but they're all inconsistent.
many smaller, seemingly less sophisticated cities i visit have a good classical station, a good jazz station, and a good golden oldies station.
kc has no consistent station in any of those categories.
90.9 is awesome. Love the Bridge.
ReplyDeleteCars already have internet, it's called a phone. Dumbest marketing ploy ever - internet enabled cars. As if that car has a magic WiFi attached to it that makes it better than your phone. On top of that it's another data connection you have to pay for which ain't gonna be cheap. Just make your phone a hotspot....voila Internet enabled car.
But if your phone is your radio, how do you type your texts while you're driving fifteen miles over the speed limit?
