BITTER HOLIDAY SEASON BUDGET FIGHT THREATENS JACKSON COUNTY EXECUTIVE FRANK WHITE AS LEGISLATURE UNIMPRESSED BY JAIL TASK FORCE HYPE!!!

Just like the rest of Kansas City po'folk struggling to come up with the cash to pay off end-of-year property taxes and share a little bit of holiday cheer . . . Jackson County will be fighting about money all through December.

Take a look:

Examiner: White releases county budget proposal

Deets:

"County spending would rise 1.45 percent from this year’s adopted budget of $310.3 million . . . White favors higher pay for corrections officers, trying to get a handle on staff turnover that officials say is a major problem at the jail. He wanted that to kick in this fall, but legislators said it could wait until Jan. 1, when the new budget takes effect. White’s budget doesn’t call for new Corrections Department positions, but spending would rise from $26.25 million this year to $29.32 million in 2018."

Here's the word . . .

"(Executive) Frank (White) might be able to easily sway the media but the fact his that he still hasn't changed his approach in the Legislature and those relationships haven't been repaired. His "task force" stunt was great public relations but I'm not sure how much it matters when what he's really doing is RAISING A MASSIVE DEBT LEVEL at the County. They news might be kind to him but constituents are going to take it out on the Legislature when they see those higher property tax bills just in time for the election.

So expect a debate over just about every line item. Frank's budget is going to get put down next session and he'll probably veto the Legislature's response. It's not going to be pretty but the financial strategy from this Administration is irresponsible to say the least."

  1. Make it simple. It's borrowing from taxpayers to pay for the jail. That's all it is. Frank is taking out a HUGE loan to make up for the mismanagement. So anyone who does business in Jackson County will be penalized for the bad management of the jail. I don't see how most people aren't getting that but the 16 million is just the start of the public payment for this.

    1. Doing business in KC has always been a losing proposition. Now even moreso.

  2. Rising property taxes in KC? So what! We have a mayor who is just a smiling guy and a baseball player in charge! We're good. I guess we should just blame the Republicans for higher taxes, not the local officials.

    1. This is all pretty good for incumbents in the legislature who want to get reelected. Frank, on the other hand, looks like a one termer.

  3. Who says Frank's task force stunt was a great PR move? At least 3 people on it think the task force is a waste of time and money, and The Star essentially called it a joke. What Jackson County needs is a task force to explore Frank's competency for doing the job of county executive.

  4. I hope the Legislature cuts the executive office staff to the bone. Start by eliminating any position Frank might put Caleb Clifford or Angie Jeffries in. The worst thing he did was listening to those 2.

  5. So Frank wants to pay the people doing a shitty job running the jail more money? What budget cuts is he making to pay for higher guard pay? Why don't he take a pay cut since he's doing a half ass job?

  6. If they really want to build a Jail and do it right, they will take it out of the hands of Jackson County and start from the ground up.

  7. Privatization of the jail should be on the table . Make it for profit. There will never be a shortage of slappies trying to get in there . No amenities, and torture introduced as a deterrent to crime .

    1. ^^^ This is the only real idea for change. EXCELLENT comment. That is what we need to start talking to Jackson County about.

  8. How about we replace Frank with someone capable of the job and smart enough?

  9. What's more absurd?

Frank White supposedly wants to hire a consultant to run this task force, after the county's already hired a couple of consultants who've already filed reports on the jail. HEY FRANK, WHAT THE FUCK ARE WE PAYING YOU FOR?

    OR this...

He doesn't think a new jail needs to have any more beds than the current one, the one that's been chronically overcrowded for more than two decades. Shouldn't take a task force to tell you that's just stupid.

    This is so FUBAR.

  10. Frank White is over his head and needs to be a quick learner or resign

  11. ^^^ it's been 2 years and Frank hasn't shown a willingness to learn anything it just keeps getting worse the longer he's in the job
