Will More Kansas City Water Infrastructure Keep The Northland Winning?!?!

The theory is simple and longstanding for residents across the bridge:

Add water and the Northland will blossom.

Maybe and maybe not . . .

Not so long ago, Renaissance North had plenty of access to water but it turned out the suburban good life just didn't sell and the project was a bankrupt mess by the same local power player attempting to build a downtown hotel.

A few not so fun facts . . .

- Wealth inequality is only getting worse in the U.S. - The American suburban dream is becoming a cruel joke that's unattainable thanks to ruling class of greedy corporations.

- Big money is still moving Downtown and the urban core . . . The McMansion is now a sign of middle-class vapidity whereas locals with the big bucks want to pretend that the Crossroads is Midtown Manhattan NYC. And a lot of them have the cash to do it.

- The Northland needs more jobs . . . Working at a box store or strip mall isn't going to afford the suburban dream and the smart local economic players are working behind the scenes to bring more hiring to this often overlooked part of town.

And now back to the amateur urban planner porn where locals can pretend to understand population shifts and trend that are mostly beyond their control . . .

"KC Water recently completed the third phase of the Arrowhead Transmission Main project. This main will increase the reliability of water distribution north of the river by adding a 54” transmission main to supplement two existing water mains."

Take a look:

You decide . . .

  1. At least the Northland is trying some real improvements, not just fake transit.

  3. It's not just water. It's sidewalks, schools, jobs, police, streets,
etc. - KC has such a simplistic view of development that it's a wonder this entire city doesn't collapse.

  5. Northland needs to get with the Sly James program or they will be left behind, unable to compete, not world class, and not like Portland.

  6. Anybody who spends lots of cash because they think the Crossroads District is like mid-town Manhattan needs to spend that money on:
    1. A good psychiatrist.
    2. Getting out lots more.
    Mid-town Manhattan, Kansas, maybe.
The beautiful people rubes of cow town city!

^^^ You have to learn to spell it first.

I'm not even trying to be a Nazi about it.

    Here it is:

    secede
    səˈsēd

    verb
withdraw formally from membership in a federal union, an alliance, or a political or religious organization.

  11. Actually the term is "De-Annex". The 1980 changes to the Missouri Constitution do provide a method by which citizens can petition for a vote, such voting to be only by the residents of the "Northland" as to whether they wish to stay as a part of Kansas City or de-annex themselves.

The Supreme Court's view, based on a case in St. Louis County in 1993, seems to be in this instance that, since the residents of the areas north of the River that were annexed by the City in 1951 did not have a vote on the annexation question, the 1980 changes now allow for such a vote. No vote on the issue would be required from the voters south of the River, since their choice in 1951 to annex is presumed to still be valid,

If a simple majority of the residents of KC north of the river did vote to "de-annex", the Court would probably set a time period for this to happen, after which those areas no longer part of Kansas City would then have the choice if Incorporation themselves (there is no community in Missouri named "Northland") or joining any contiguous community already incorporated (Riverside, Gladstone, etc.).

If this were to happen, you residents of "Baja KC" would no longer have to provide "everything" for the ungrateful wretches north of the River, and could immediately achieve Nirvana!

Of course you would be doing so without 50% of your geographical area, 38% of your present population, and 63% of your current tax revenues, but just think how happy you could be!

  14. Have to agree with 9:35 a.m. regarding the Northland de-annexing from the City south of the river. We need to start a campaign and get the surrounding cities to get on board. There are some really good people up here who would like to get out of the KCMO mess. Let's see, where did I put that metro map?

  15. ^^^ Good call @9:35!

    Great information!
