TKC QUESTION: ARE THE NEW KANSAS CITY SINGLE-TERMINAL AIRPORT SKETCHES WORTH ONE BILLION DOLLARS???

Let's contemplate the new set of drawings released by airport backers today.

These artsy renderings deserve special consideration because they could cost Kansas City big money for years to come if airlines spike prices and fees as the cost of traveling continues to skyrocket.

There's a cool new fountain that's doesn't have a racist name . . . I'm sure that's worth a few bucks.

Fountain motion graphic . . .

And then . . .

And there's photos of a lounge which signals that this option is jam packed full of entertainment options to keep bored travelers entertained during their layovers. No word about a fair wage for all of the workers who might or might not laboring on graveyard shifts when most people are stuck at the airport without many options to escape . . .

BEST CRITICISM FROM FRIENDS OF THE BLOG:

ALL COTTON CANDY . . . IT LOOKS LIKE GEORGE JETSON-VILLE!!!

Still, overall THE NEW AIRPORT DESIGN LOOKS SMALLER and this anticlimactic presentation reveals that the campaign to thrust the plan on voters is lackluster at best.

  1. Looks nicer than our eastern european depression terminal that we have now.

  2. ^^^ Really, seems like kind of a dated design to me. If the airport is a 1960s version of the future, then these renderings seem reminiscent of the "Friends" era 1990s.

And the fountain? We've been arguing for years about this and all they give us is a new fountain??

  3. #newkci didn't even seem that happy about it.

    can't say I blame them.

  4. Look to me like Oaklands

    ReplyDelete
  5. It looks like a cheap design but not bad, I’m having a hard time with steel frames and glass costing a billion dollars though

    ReplyDelete
  6. If built in 20 years the next wave of so called progressives will be yelling and screaming how old and obsolete it is. And how we need more terminals.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Looks like they took the Burns and Mac design and replaced the escalators with a fountain.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Probably won't even last for 20 years knowing how KCMO maintains things and all the sub par materials and workmanship in this so called modern age.

Better headline: Waterfall fountain costs Kansas City one billion dollars!

  10. Looks like a used car showroom.

  11. Truthfully it looks like the TWA terminal at JFK, which was built in 1962.

  12. ^^^ EXCELLENT CALL!

    Thought it looked familiar.

Too bad, KC needs to talk about a new airport but not like this. It seems like a better leader could make a compromise.

  13. ARE THE NEW KANSAS CITY SINGLE-TERMINAL AIRPORT SKETCHES WORTH ONE BILLION DOLLARS???

    Yup.

  14. I'll give it 15 year's and with the construction flaws, you will have to build a new one,They are making throw away terminals these days. Or they will say we need more gates IN 2027,We need money to expand the airport.

  16. So, is anyone asking why we want to do this airport and now we hear today they are looking at trying to build Royals stadium in downtown? Where's the money coming from?

They want to do the airport with totally private dollars, but, it's still a little sketchy if this is a reality....most everyone with a thimble of common sense think tax dollars come into play.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Private money underwritten by public bonds.
    The risk is on us.
    No downside for the developer.

    ReplyDelete
  18. As long as the new terminal design includes a fat talking mannequin with a bow tie, I'm all for it.
That's what it's really all about, after all.

  19. 613 is right. eero saarinen designed it.

since we avoid jfk, don't know if it's even still there. last time we were, part of itvwas still cool but part had been chopped up and seemed like a period piece.

  20. How can it be energy efficient?

  21. 7:37 FTW! sLIE james International Airport is all he wants

  22. A billion dollars to adulate travelers? Fuck that. Build a shack and bus them from the parking lot to the runway. This is exactly the dog and pony show that KC can do without.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Look, the problem with any and all airports is that their purpose, to be functional in getting passengers on and off planes, is what's important.

We feel about airports about the way we do about airlines, phone companies, cable providers, banks, and the like: We not too excited about any of them. Hence, we fall back to basics.

    And, we like KCI's efficiency.

    ReplyDelete
  24. giant spaces with just a few people?

pretty picture but never been in an airport like that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sad. kc temporary school house for planes. even with the royals2015, KC has a bigger branding problem than it did before.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wonder how well it will stand up to a good ole midwestern hailstorm.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It looks like we can't afford to put any chairs by the gates. I get to sit at KCI now.

    ReplyDelete
  28. contemporary and temporary!

    ReplyDelete
  29. it is a series of manipulated and deconstructed quonset huts for 1 billion.

    ReplyDelete
  30. how do the photos look if you put in lots of people?

    ReplyDelete
  31. ^^^ Good question. With a smaller airport, the lines are going to be much worse.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Looks like a Chevy dealer in the blue door frames.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Better than the Ghettotown we got now.

See how all the people in the sketches are white? There's a reason.

    ReplyDelete
  34. WTF - looks like a lounge at a convention hotel that can handle about 400

    ReplyDelete
  35. Are you sure that is not Branson's airport

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am ok with it as long as they name it Boondoggle International Airport

    ReplyDelete
  37. After two years this is what we have got? The gang who can't shoot straight proved how they over and over pullDilbertville moves

    ReplyDelete
  38. Those who vote for this are the zenith of Kansas City stupid or corrupt.

Millions will be spent to convince KC voter to adopt this boondoggle scam and ya know what the Cowtown muthafuckas will deserve it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Before you vote please find out who is fooling who here.

There is not valid reason to spend a billion to replace what we have.

HELLO....HELLO....Anyone got a brain out there.

    ReplyDelete
  40. quonset huts. each screw priced at $1000.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Isn't there an empty Kmart we could relocate up North and make it a terminal?

    ReplyDelete
  42. the outside dropoff/pickup isn't detailed out.

the acess to gates is not detailed out.

the giant hall with just a few people and a few chairs idn't detailed out.

a broad brush conception can look pretty but you can't really tell much.

since KCI patrons have above average convenience now, they need reassurance on the new design, which these drawings don't give.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wasn't B and M further along in their plans?

    ReplyDelete
  44. @ 9:43 "Plans" aren't necessary. All that has to be done is to buy a copy of the blueprints for any of the crowded, inadequate, non-functioning much-hated Mid-sized Airports that have been built across the country in the last forty years, white-out the name at the top, and start tearing down Terminal "A".

Apparently, in Developer's minds, up-to-date means that which has not worked for nearly half a century!

    VOTE NO!

GET YOUR ASS OUT ON NOVEMBER 7th AND SAVE KCI!

DO NOT let these scoundrels waste a Billion and destroy any chance we have for economic growth by building the same crap that doesn't work everywhere else!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Every time I hear "BM", my mind skips straight to bowel movement. Product of my raising I reckon.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hey a-holes, layoff the new airport design. AT LEAST IT HAS F'ING USB CHARGERS AT EACH SEAT!!!! Right?, they have to be, it's what we travelers demand. I mean, hard to tell in the renderings, but sure they're there.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hey, @ 10:36, I'm from Edgemoor - what are these "USB Chargers" you speak of?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Every time I go to the airport, I see people standing or sitting while locked onto their cell phones. The building could be a barn and they wouldn't even notice. Also, the shops and places to eat are the same crap you see in every other airport. Sky-high prices, cheap junk from China, fast-food courts, and people waiting to get on a plane and go somewhere else. Jeez. Even in the VERY BEST AIRPORTS, that's still all anyone wants to do.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yup built with "private money", and within five years after it's completed, the Airlines will start threatening to drop service due to the "High Cost of Debt Service" and we'll have the choice of refinancing with Tax-supported Bonds or losing flights.

    REMODEL!

Connect "A" and "C" to "B" with people movers, put all shopping and security in "B", and we still come out of this with less cost and more gates available! Can the new design handle larger planes? From both renderings we've seen so far, the parking areas seem to be closer together than what we already have. Remember that the existing gates could service L-1011s when they were still being flown, and they were bigger than anything Boeing or Airbus has announced.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I heard we are going to build an airport that is smaller with fewer bays for planes then the one we hav now and we have shut down a third of the airport to crowd everyone .

    ReplyDelete
  51. Where is the money coming from? I see no money at all.
