Black Kansas City Residents Fear Losing Their Homes To Gentrification

If you live in Kansas City, you know what the phrase "east of Troost" means. If you don't, it means "over in the black side of town." But that's about to change. The city's Beacon Hill neighborhood has seen a huge influx of white residents, and long-time black residents of Beacon Hill aren't sure how they feel about that, according to the Associated Press.

  1. Move a mile east for 2 000 bucks

  2. The same thing happened on the West Side when people who worked for a living started buying houses, fixing them up and moving in.

Pretty soon all the Welfare recipients were being forced by the City to get rid of three or four of the cars up on concrete blocks in their front yards, rake their leaves once every two or three years, move some of the non-working electrical appliances off their front porches, and even had to listen to suggestions that they paint their houses every couple of decades or so!

Outrageous! And now it's happening all over again!

Damn Racists, with their houses fixed up and fit to live in!

  4. ^^^^Now, now. Just because they won't let you park your trailer there is no reason to get all huffy.

  5. Any trailer park is safer than most black neighborhoods.

  7. Switch the words black and white in this article. Blacks are so much more racist than whites. Don't worry homeboys, this kracker gon be staying well west of the Mason/Dixon of kc.

  8. Lou Austin says: I was on the PIAC committee when the initial Beacon Hill infrastructure improvements were being funded - we voted a lot of money to help bring this worthy project into reality - the concept at the time was to improve and enhance the residential character of this then distressed area, not recreate a swath of upper crust Johnson County Mac Mansions in a tax abated fortress to the exclusion of all, except those with lots of means. I find it ironic that many want to eradicate JC Nichols from the history of our city because his subdivisions contained racial covenants (like virtually every other subdivision in America at that time), but it is OK for the City to restrict Beacon Hill housing to nothing less than 1,800 square feet - Nichols covenants discriminated against targeted profiles by race - whereas the City is discriminating against EVERYONE by economic class under the code words of economic development. The net effect of this policy is to destroy the viability of the neighborhood and the surrounding area - and where are the people on the ground who call this area home going to go as they get priced out existence? At a minimum the City should demand a variety of square foot houses be included in the project - this should be as a matter of public policy which is justified because of the public funds invested in the project.

  10. Of course the black residents don't like it, they gang whitey on the east side and won't let whitey move in or even drive in that part of the hood without trouble and threats, but yet they cross Troost Halloween night and want candy from whitey because they can't even trust their own part of the hood.
Beacon Hill will take some time prices are starting off a little high but glad it's getting done over there. Remember white flight???? Well what goes around comes around.

  11. Drive the hoodrats to the golden ghetto or to the countryside, gentrification is the only way to restore and develop the city.

  12. 27th and troost,,, gentry fied,, 27th and prospect, your chocolate utopia, that's why everyone moved out 50 years ago. Holding on to these civil rights era grievances, while the world has proven the woeful portrayal is a sham, they said themselves, 20 years ago there was prostitute, burnt down houses, some yuppies come in and fix it up , boo hoo, u still have all of the eastside, Indy ave to Bannister, grandview ,south Blue Ridge, all of north Wyco, elementary schools in Shawnee mission are like 30 percent black, so there's incursion in Jc Nichols KS side, but let's birch about beacon hill and it's unjust nouveau white superiority status

  13. Nobody likes change. It's scary when you see white faces in a black neighborhood. They are right to fear rising property taxes. The County is licking its' lips waiting to jack up the tax bill for the poor folks (blacks) who really cannot afford one more penny out of their pockets.

The black neighbors should hold onto their homes and not be railroaded into selling if they don't want to. I wish them luck.

  14. I think it ironic that Dee Evans the “neighborhood president” has reason to put her two cents into this. Sure, she lives there. But she was cheerleading just five years ago for people just a few blocks over to be pushed out of their houses, too. Now, it’s happening to her by virtue of White encroachment and she has a problem with it. It’s better to unify with people rather to cheer on the destruction of others. Her chickens are coming home to roost and she no longer has a husband who will fight her battles. Becareful what you wish on others... She apparently didn’t learn that very basic lesson. I’mma sit back and watch her get pushed out - although most of the complainers are likely the old folks born in the 40’s and 50’s.

  15. Lou Austin at 2:45 is right.

Troy Schulte was bragging about $400,000 homes in Beacon Hill at a neighborhood meeting in 2014 and I said to him then that this wasn't a strategy that was well thought out for the folks who are actually living in that neighborhood already. It's not a long term strategy for improving the east side; simply displacing folks.
