TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! KANSAS CITY STREETCAR CONFRONTS MORE PRESSURE TO STOP FREE RIDES!!!

Questions of disparity and lost revenue persist as voters demand more accountability from The Kansas City Streetcar Authority.

While working poor bus riders are forced to pay their share to fund local transit, streetcar riders enjoying luxury living space and night life don't have to pay a dime.

To wit . . .

CHECK THIS EPIC COST ANALYSIS FROM THE TKC BLOG COMMUNITY WHICH OFFERS A PEEK AT TOY TRAIN LOST REVENUE THANKS TO UNFAIR FREE RIDES!!!

Here's part of the breakdown . . .

"The Kansas City streetcar tallied its 2 millionth ride Friday, May 5, 2017. If they would have been charging the tourists to use it that would have meant potentially $6-million revenue that could have been used to offset the estimated $11-million a year in operating expenses."

There's a trend at play here . . .

Detroit has cancelled streetcar free rides.

Furthermore . . .

AMID UPCOMING STREETCAR ELECTIONS, THE TOPIC OF FARES HAS GARNERED MORE ATTENTION AND ADVOCACY FROM LOCALS WHO BELIEVE THAT ENDING FREE RIDES IS ESSENTIAL IN SECURING MORE STREETCAR REVENUE AND SUSTAINABILITY!!!

That's right, there are a growing number of strident streetcar supporters who see fares as a way to pay for a proposed extension.

After all, if the Kansas City toy train streetcar is soooooooo popular, that means people would gladly pay for the service, right?

You decide . . .

  1. Fares are a big part of funding for the bus. It's a big percentage of what keeps the ATA going. What's the argument against charging? Streetcar riders don't need to pay but the rest of the city does? There's just no defending that kind of privilege.

    1. How would we implement the charges? That's what I'd like to know. I guess it's easy enough on the bust. I think some people underestimate the streetcar riders. A lot of them would gladly purchase a quick pass that worked electronically.

    2. We are a "smart city" after all. KC's reasons for not doing it are getting harder to justify.

Don't be cow TKC! Would anybody really pay to ride the streetcar? UNLIKELY.

  3. It's a sure loser to try to charge after you've offered a service or product for free.
Just ask the Star and their online content.
The streetcar is just another financial sucking chest wound inflicted on KCMO residents which will still be sucking money out of the general fund long after the thrill of this fad has faded.
    Bad choices and decisions.
Short-term excitement over long-term funding and priorities.

    Oh yeah? Such as?

  6. The free rides likely were intended to get the ridership numbers up, and those manufactured numbers would then be used to justify an extension. That really did not work. Those pushing for the extension lost all credibility long ago.

  7. This is probably the wrong website to be talking about "credibility" on.

  8. The streetcar people would never agree to charging a fare because it would show their wild ridership claims are bogus. Actual ridership numbers would be verified by the number of tickets sold. You don't see the buses making outrageous ridership claims.

  9. 90% of the ridership are tourist. Why should KCMO citizens have to pay for an amusement ride for them?

  10. Two millionth rider... sure... Just like the wait time at KCI is 30 minutes... It's going to take years to restore trust in City Hall..

  11. The free ride gimmick should have been the first weekend only and from there on a fare equal to what is charged to ride a bus. Sure the rider counts will plummet but is only way to prove without a doubt what a joke this whole train deal was.

  12. Just charge a dollar. At least then negroes won't ride it. They will just carjack some dumb sss pussy millenial instead.

  13. That must be why every negro that passes me on the street always ask for a dollar.

If the toy choo choo can be a free ride then all the buses should be a free ride as well.

  15. I bet Cleaver saves the city by getting a Federal grant to pay for the free rides. After all we can not let KC slip as THE entitlement city.

  16. Some movies are so bad that "free" is the only way to make them work.

  17. Streetcar extension is going to get maximal challenge as will any foisted fix. Fix what you have with 800 million and then we will talk. Note how the barely funded rag tag army has with almost no resources changed the narrative and has the machine just looking like special interest fixers. Go public first with priorities, not developer/lawyer special interest pretend emergencies. The costs of being bs artists are going way up.

  27. Pretty sure there's few as publicly outspoken about the streetcar as myself, and I am telling you right now that the folks demanding that we charge streetcar fare are more concerned with making the streetcar fail even if it costs us *more* money.

    KEEP THE STREETCAR FREE FOREVER.

All these folks who claim that public transit should produce some kind of profit; you've never heard of a "loss leader,"??! It's an extremely successful marketing strategy that capitalists use *all the time*!!

Every city that has switched from free streetcar rides to charging fare has seen their ridership numbers drop *dramatically* and I will tell you from personal experience riding streetcars in other cities that charge fare: There is no way to enforce it!

Unless we are going to build infrastructure that forces folks to walk through turnstiles to board, which will cost much much more than $6M collected from 2M riders, or install a kiosk on the streetcars and hire additional folks at every entrance to ensure that folks pay, we simply can't do it.

Funding the streetcar through the TDD is really the best way to do it; the problem is with the corrupt way the TDD is formed and voted upon. Ridership numbers increase revenue in the TDD and helps pay for the cost because guess what? If we're undermining the success of the streetcar, we will take *more* money from the transportation find or general revenue to illegally fund the streetcar.

Demanding that streetcar charge fare undermines the entire case for making real transit improvements and makes opponents look like amateurs who don't know how to run a business or do math.
