Kansas City Washington Square Park Still Serves As Homeless Camp Site

Took this shot earlier this week as two homeless dudes slept at the feet of a statue of the first American President at Washington Square Park in Downtown Kansas City.

Homeless and junkies and junkie homeless have camped out here since I was a kid in the 1980s.

Downtown is rife with development schemes and high priced condos. But homeless people still hang out at this location.

There have been a wave of protests this year as women came out en masse against current Prez Trump, locals in support of science and some reactionaries against Muslims.

And still the park belongs to the homeless after dark.

A better writer would make a more apt analogy, a better reporter might note the story of these scamps. This blog simply wanted to document a constant Kansas City fact of life that so many political activists "on many sides" ignore because it doesn't fall into line with their flimsy rhetoric or selfish agenda.

You decide . . .

  2. Hell, the homeless have to hang out somewhere, otherwise they'd have to go to one of the many half-filled Shelters that are available to them in Kansas City! And if they go to one of those Shelters, there are those damned "Rules" they have to follow!

NOBODY's going to tell them what they can or cannot do, damnit!
They won't even let anybody drink, drug up or give blowjobs in one of those places! Totally unreasonable, might as well get a damn Job!

Besides, where else are they gonna go? The damn City's pretty much run them out of the "Pee Park" at 12th & Walnut, and there's too many thugs hanging out at Ike Davis Park!

  3. There's a permanent underclass of people who prefer to sleep in the park and wander about the city all day, panhandling. Many, if not most, have serious mental issues. Food, shelter, clothing, and work are available to them, but they because of their illness, they are beyond reach. This park is one of the places where they feel "safe," relatively speaking. It is also rather close to Truman Medical Center and Western Missouri Mental Health, where many of them have short sojourns for observation. .

  9. "I saw a homeless person. Instead of stopping to help him I got this KICKASS PICTURE and then ran home to sound smart. "

  10. Nice photo. Too bad KC doesn't do something about the growing number of homeless on local streets. It seems like if we have enough money for hotels and airports, we could find better accommodations than a park or on the street. .
