HAS THE TOY TRAIN STREETCAR RUINED KANSAS CITY RIVER MARKET???

Quick blog community question about the topic of style, entertainment and public subsidy for the early evening . . .

AMID TWO ICONIC RESTAURANT CLOSINGS NEAR THE KANSAS CITY RIVER MARKET - CRITICS BLAME THE STREETCAR FOR FOR KILLING LONGTIME LOCAL BIZ!!!

Checkit . . .

Café Al Dente is moving out amid rising rents but without an influx of new customers to sustain the biz that has endured heavy construction, street rearrangement and long-term neglect from City Hall over the years.

Winslow’s BBQ has been in the River Market for nearly half a century but will now shut down despite celebration of more River Market biz that didn't sustain the endeavor.

In the midst of all this, parking in the River Market has become a nightmare for longtime denizens and worsens with digital meters that tax local autos with even more efficiency.

WHAT'S WORSE IS THAT STREETCAR SUPPORTERS ATTACK ANY CONCERN ABOUT A WORSENING AND UNFRIENDLY RIVER MARKET ENVIRONMENT FOR SMALL BIZ!!!

A cruel divisive litany of comments was directed against both Café Al Dente and those concerned about parking by those who enforce the City Hall narrative about the benefits of spiking rents and crowding residents for the benefit of a few developers.

And so, other than real estate propaganda and City Hall hype . . . The news we're seeing from the River Market is longtime merchants PUSHED OUT, a worsening environment drivers and the ongoing attempt to create and UPSCALE enclave that doesn't have much in common with Kansas City's history, the majority of the local residents or so many people who have worked to sustain this part of Kansas City for so long . . . Before the current wave or irrational exuberance and speculative real estate tyranny.

You decide . . .

  1. Follow the money.

This isn't development. It's straight up graft and corruption.

As for the mean tweets, that's just the KCMO sewing circle of a few guys getting paid to troll social media. Same tactics every campaign uses.

    2. ^^^^^^^^ Really hope that is not true. That's one of the last places in the River Market that's not totally populated by hipsters.

  2. But don't you see? This is how we become Seattle! By getting rid of all the KC residents first!

    Progress is a bitch. Sorry.

  5. Gangsta's, corrupt democrats of Kansas City, murder, rape, stealing of vehicles yup just the place where my 16 year old daughter needs to hang out. Hoop on the streetcar named Desire and off she goes on the ride or last ride of her life.
Birum, shut the fuck up. Your one annoying piece of shit.
    Polar Bear sez hey.

  6. The streetcar is not mass transit, even though idiots who have never taken a subway rapid transit underground train would know. It's a pathetic toy train for developers. It is far worse than a bus.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Being against the streetcar is being against progress. Just like being against buses was being against progress when fixed rail "transit" went the way of the horse and buggy, which will probably become the next urban fad.

    ReplyDelete
  8. ^^^ Not sure what side you're on here. Electric buses are still a great option for mass transit. But the streetcar has never been about moving anybody but tourists.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Somehow I fail to see how the failure of two restaurants, both noted for poor quality food and iffy to dismal service, constitutes the destruction of the City Market.

I agree that the Streetcar, as it exists, does constitute what Ex-Mayor Cleaver described as "Touristy Froo-Froo", but I cannot help but hold on to some faint hope that actual "Leadership" will arise in this City in the future, and the Streetcar, or more probably Electric Busses can be expanded to bring about a viable and self-supporting Rapid Transit System.

But the first step needs to be aimed at construction of the portion of such a System that has proven to be the backbone and funding generator for every successful System in existence, some sort of Rapid Transit to the Airport! That, and not a "Single Terminal", is the goal City Hall should be striving for. The KC voters approved such a plan once, much to the City's dismay, so getting behind another such plan should be possible.

    1. The city will never support mass transit to the airport, because of the Mountain of money they make from parking.

  10. The narrative must win. At all costs *wink*.

  11. Actually, what killed the River Market was (pick one):

The Democrats did it after they staged Puerto Rico.
    It was fake news.
    Mitch McConnel.
    Kneeling during the Anthem.
or, any other damn excuse you want to advance.

Until this shit heal is thrown out of the WH, a third of the Country will live in a no-facts world.

    Alex Jones anyone?

  12. Should have let the Mob run it.
No bullshit. Just straight up bombs, arson and bodies in trunks.
That's how you run a business.

  13. Bravo to @8:06 - A well reasoned comment that did a very good counterpoint. While I may disagree with some of your points, Cafe Al Dente was very underrated and regular customers adored the service. I agree need more discussion like that!

  20. If JoCo had the trolley instead of KCMO, the wannabe urbanites couldn’t make enough fun of it. But because it’s in KCMO, they think it’s super progressive and sophisticated, despite being nothing more than a glorified tram like those that haul people from the parking lot to the entry gates at theme parks. The hipsters are dying to erase KC’s cow town image, but in many cases, including the trolley, they’re only making it worse.

  25. Ever since the electronic parking meters were put in there has been a decline in cars parked on the street in River Market. No one is using them. Since there is nowhere else to park I have to assume people are not going there for lunch anymore. The only cars parked now are the regulars of the people who work in the River Market area. There has been a noticeable drop in people at the restaurants, market stalls, and people strolling in the area during the week. I see it every day and I am happy. Now I have a place to park while at work.

  26. Al Dente was great business for seventeen years and Winslow's, regardless of quality, lasted forty three years. That means it outlived the River Quay and mafia.

There's no question that the streetcar pushed these businesses out, and the fact that streetcar fanboys think that simply because they didn't like these businesses that it doesn't matter or that perhaps it's a good thing. This is the exact mentality that I am speaking of when I call attention to the racism and gentrification that accompanies streetcar. Folks can claim they love diversity all day long, but none of these folks shed a tear when small businesses owned by immigrants are replaced by out of state chain restaurants. When there's more hipsters hanging out in venues that they prefer, they don't think twice about the refugees that resettled in a community and had to be displaced once again.

  27. Bryan, (sorry, Herr Doktor Professor Brian M. Stadler Esq., PhD, LSMFT, OBE, VC, SPQR), if you're a fan of the cuisine at Al Dente, I've got a suggestion for a better-tasting alternative for you.

Go to the gourmet section of your local Grocer, and look for anything sold under the brand name of "Chef Boy-Ar-Dee"! Pop open a can, heat, and enjoy a much better product than you've ever had from Al Dente, regardless of how long they've been open.

  29. Nah, just another false narrative pushed by basement boy. Businesses come and go regardless of the location. Epoch owns these properties and they have the right under the free market economy to do so. Indian mound loser doesn't realize this as well.

But this narrative is not a surprise since it's coming from this guy:
