TKC QUESTION: IS ACTIVIST CLAY CHASTAIN KANSAS CITY BALLOT BOX POISON?!?!

Last night Clay Chastain's Question 2 went down in flames by a margin of 58 to 42. The decisive defeat was surprising given that the Kansas City Regional Transit Alliance endorsed his effort.

And all of this begs the question . . .

WILL CLAY CHASTAIN FINALLY ABANDON HIS KANSAS CITY RAIL QUEST AND HONOR HIS PROMISE ON GIVE UP ON LOCAL RAIL EFFORTS?!?!?

A bit refresher that denizens of our blog community might have forgotten . . .

Sep 19, 2016, 3:08pm From the Kansas City Biz Journal - Chastain's last stand: Activist says this is his final light-rail bid

Money line . . .

Chastain, who has used initiative petitions to get several light-rail proposals on ballots during the past 20-plus years, outlined his latest during a public forum Monday that attracted a crowd of only 10 people to a meeting room at the Kansas City Public Library's Country Club Plaza branch. "If they vote for it, we're going for it," Chastain said. "But if it's voted down, I'll consider the light-rail issue in Kansas City dead."

To be fair, this was back in November before his previous defeat and his new plan was focused on light rail and not streetcar expansion . . . Nevertheless, it's now getting closer to a decade since Mr. Chastain has seen an election victory and his continued activism is now used at talking point against Citizen Initiative Petitions which represent a vital aspect of local Democracy. Is it time for him to quit???

You decide . . .

  1. Clay is no different than the rest pro light rail, trolley or streetcar group. They live in the past, they are all poison.

  2. Clay is like herpes ... something you wish that would go away but resurfaces every so often.

Keep your politics in Virginia, Clay.

  3. The guy is drowning in serious psychological issues that would take an exothermic torch to get to. HE DOESN'T LIVE HERE!

Our only hope, is that he gets a gig on some "Real Housewife" show that feeds his ego and diverts his attention from his Kansas City 'Windmill'.

  4. Media will not acknowledge that Clay's effort was primary reason for resurrection of Union Station when the City Fathers were content to let it fall down so that the developers could get control of the property. Sly's streetcar folly-trolley was never about transportation, but economic development.

This vote is a rejection of Sly. Voters have not had a way to express their disapproval of the toy train until now.

CFRG's opposition, along with Clay's effort, may not have been successful in stopping Sly's rush to City fiscal bankruptcy, but they have slowed it down. For their efforts they should be applauded. The hardworking taxpayers of Kansas City owe them a debt of gratitiude.

  6. Don't forget: Clay did not get to vote this time, because his SISTER reported him to the election board that he no longer "rents a room at her home in Westport", so he is no longer a registerd voter.

Clay, you are toxic, go away.

And yes, I loved the irony of the KCRTA endorsing Issue 2. Illustrating that had it passed, they would have once again raided the kitty and stolen the new tax revenue for 25 long years, to prop up their terrible trasit schemes.

KCMO is failing. Rome is burning. Wake up, people! Without a daily newspaper, without TV news stations who will speak truth to power, you are being ripped off. Letting Clay Chastain be your standard bearer is a failed strategy.

  7. Clay, I never understood your obsession, but I honor your commitment. Thanks for saving Union Station. It would not be standing except for you.

  8. KC RTA just running a false flag on Clay, stakes of poker going up, now the public will be pissed enough they damage their public careers in this city

  9. Idée fixe. I blame this megalomaniac for why KC has no light rail. Always we have to vote on Clay's tinkertoys, and the spoiled rich boy doesn't even live here. Compare St. Lous with a much loved train system-- no Clay. FUCK HIM.

  10. Bravo, Oliver!
Tony, red letter day, we have a commenter using a French phrase, with an accent egu. I bet the TKC trolls had no idee about that.

By the way, Clay is not rich, he just obsessed. But great post, Oliver. Especially the image of Clay's tinkertoys--a double entendre as well, because he's always tinkering.

And what this points up is, a crazy man presents ideas, but nobody else is doing that, except for the wolves at City Hall trying to fleece the taxpayers...

Keep making a difference, Oliver. KCMO may be close to hitting bottom, and it's time for new leadership and participation to rise.

  11. Oliv-ee-Yay and Tray-see,

(How's my Frahnch accent, make you hungry for Frahnch Fries and Frahnch Toast?) (Dang, the Trolls are smarter than you thought!)

Sorry, but it's time to break up the old KC Jumble and get things down to a manageable size! Futurists pretty much agree that a population of approximately 250,000 seems to be the largest that can be efficiently served and governed.

We can make a good start by reversing the 1951 land grab and splitting KC along the River, and then you folks in "Baja KC" can have futuristic Maglev Supertrains zipping in circles around your "not-so-Jelly-filled" Donut!

    !! VIVA NORTHLANDIA !!
