TKC MUST READ!!! CRAIG CONSIDERS KANSAS CITY CHIEFS LEGACY & 2017!!!
At the outset of a critical season, our pal Craig considers the future of Kansas City's football heroes . . . Checkit:
Craig Glazer: NFL Begins! Are Our Chiefs A Top Tier Franchise?
It all begins again in just a few days, pre-season NFL football. Our Kansas City Chiefs are ranked 8th best team in the NFL. That would make them a playoff club this coming season. Maybe. Now the truth. Sometimes its not easy to take, right.
LIke most of you I am a Chiefs fan for the most part. Yes its true I fell off their wagon just after Marty left KC, why? To be blunt the Chiefs have never been a serious contender since the Schottenheimer era. Have they. Marty had three teams that were true Super Bowl caliber squads, the 1993 Joe Montana team, which went to the AFC title game and got trounced by the Bills. The 1995 Steve Bono 13-3 Marcus Allen led offense that got beaten by an average Indy team at Arrowhead due to Lin Elliot missing THREE short field goals no help from Tony G. that day huh. Finally the 1997 Chiefs team led by Elvis Grbac, Marcus and Tony G. OH and the guy we benched that year, Rich Gannon, who went on the next season to be the league's M.V.P. The Chiefs lost again with a 13-3 record at home to Denver Broncos. That was the Chiefs last hurrah. Since then we have won one playoff game with Andy Reid and had the phony 13-3, 9-0 start with Dick Vermeil in 2003 and of course never won a playoff game that year.WHY SO BAD? Simple almost no major stars to lead the way, yes we had Derrick and Neil Smith on defense but we never had a great quarterback, maybe Gannon but Carl and Marty benched him. Figures.
Give Marty credit, before he got here in the late 80's the Chiefs stunk. The only time the Chiefs were truely a top NFL team was under Hank Stram, two Super Bowls and one win. Why? Len Dawson, Otis Taylor two of the all time best along with one of the all-time best NFL defenses led by Buck Buchanon, Willie Lanier and perhaps the best linebacker of all time Bobby Bell. The Chiefs have never had a top 3 or 4 NFL quarterback since Dawson, yes an aging still good Joe Montana, no young guys. So thats the main reason we are at best a low level playoff team every year with Reid thus far. We have but one true offensive super star, his name ain't Kelce, its Tyreek Hill.
Now we have the kidd, Patrick Mahomes waiting in the wings for Alex Smith to finish his term with the Chiefs. Alex has been a solid quarterback playing with few offensive weapons since he got here. No receivers of merit and one back, Charles.
Can 2017 be a biggie for Chiefs? Not likely no running backs to speak of, one receiver in HIll, a good but somewhat over rated tight end in Kelce and lots of questions on defense, an aging linebacker crew with two guys on bad injury list too often, Houston and 35 year old Johnson. Vegas has Chiefs at 28-1 to win the Super Bowl, Pats are 3-1 and the favorite. Oakland is favored to win the west, Chiefs second battling for a wild card. Hey injuries happen like last year with the Raiders quarterback going out late in the season to give KC the division title. Did us little good, the Steelers walked us at Arrowhead, we had no offense. When will it end? Maybe Mahomes is the answer a couple years from now. Hey hope we are good this year, but I don't see it right now. Do you?
