JOURNALISTIC SINS SEND MCCLATCHY EMPLOYEES TO PURGATORY

FRIDAY AUGUST 18 BRINGS A FRESH 52-WEEK LOW TO SHARE PRICE

Trivia question: What do Kansas City Mayor James, his son Malik James (editorializes against governor Greitens), and the KC Star have in common?

Answer: None of them own real estate in KCMO.
#########

Frankly, we have to disagree . . . With few exceptions, newspapers across the nation are failing and dead-tree organizations aren't finding any respite in their online offerings.

Real talk: The Star could be a champion of Prez Trump and that still wouldn't inspire people to put down their phones and pick up a newspaper. The fall of the Kansas City Star is a trend facilitated by technology not politics.

Look around at any public gathering and watch most people scrolling their social media feeds rather than carrying the local rag around.

  1. I always like the comeback to this one. It's McClatchy not the Star.

The sell off of their building was the last stand really. Not much they can do but bide their time now.

    1. Be fair TKC. There are still a lot of people there. Personally, I'd like to see if Dave Helling can write the whole editorial section by himself!

  2. Good riddance, they found out the hard way (through their pocketbook) that this is becoming more and more a republican city. Take your worthless progressive base with you while your at it

  3. No surprises for the plunge with people like Mary Sanchez there.

  4. The Scar, race baiting and liberal slant all the way. RIP.

  5. Hey you should call McClatchy again and see if SOMETIME LATER THIS YEAR THE STAR WILL STOP PUBLISHING AS MANY AS THREE OF THEIR DAILY EDITIONS!!!

    That year being 2009.

Yeah follow up on that and let us know ok little man?

  6. No problem. Taxpayers are keeping the Star facilities afloat. Especially the fancy one built riding on the hysteria run up that led to the 2008 economic crash.

  7. Good, let it bite the dust. It's been a one-sided, left-leaning, liberal-pandering rag for too long now anyway.

  8. The star still publishes?

    Who knew?

    ^^^^ LOL.

  10. The Star was bad, but lately it's been just Godawful. As an example, read the movie review of the Ferguson documentary in this morning's paper. It's a SJW rant, not a movie review. When a newspaper's strong lefist bias invades its feature articles (and soon to come, its obituaries), it's time to cancel the subscription. And good riddance to bad rubbish.

  11. I'm glad the Star cancelled three of their editions. They don't need to focus on movies or religion or health. Report the local news!

    Good call TonY!

  12. ^^^ Don't be a fart sniffer. TKC doesn't like it one way or another.

    Make a joke instead!

  13. Third-rate paper for a third-rate city.

  14. The Star is right up there with silent movies....except Hollywood was kind of able to adapt to changes.

  15. I need to read Chuck's take on this.

  17. I remember when the Star was a good paper. Way back when they reported the news, not created the news. Back when journalism was around.

  18. Ask Warren Buffett to buy the STAR FROM MCCLATCHY.

  19. All traditional Media, not just Print, are in a state of decline, and the cause is not personalities or political bias.

ADVERTISING NO LONGER WORKS! (There, it's been said! And see, the World has not come to an end!) Think back a moment, any ad you can recall is memorable for its production values (as mini-movies) but you have to really think in order to recall what product was being touted, don't you?

As with any plague that rages through a population, the survivors have developed an immunity to claims as to why OUR NEW FOOFANGLE IS THE GREATEST, and YOU HAVE TO BUY THS YEAR'S IMPROVED BOFFWANGLE, ALL YOUR FRIENDS ALREADY HAVE IT! We simply suffer from "burn out", and the Media that placed their income reliance on advertising are paying the price.

Unfortunately, media such as Cinema that relied on our willingness to pay for content, have also discovered that they have to provide content we are willing to pay for.

Electronic Media can provide an immediacy that we have come to rely on, so it is no longer enough to "tell people what happened yesterday", and so the daily publication format is doomed. Weekly or monthly vestiges providing summaries and analysis may continue in print form for a while, after all, Radio still exists, but Print Media is going to have to realize that "The Times, They Are A-Changing".

  21. We were walking our boys one Sunday and our 10-year-old saw a Sunday paper in someone's driveway- he asked what it was...
We told him a newspaper and he the look on his face... you would have thought we told him that the earth was flat.
He kept asking why was it printed and how nasty it was being on the concrete. We told him how nasty the opinions in the paper are and he vowed to never buy one- and filter out any online news from that source.
Seems as good of time as any- I explained how to short stocks and told him he can thank The Star for his college tuition, our vacations and his new shiny car he gets when he turns 16 thanks to McClasky stock going down.
It was as good of time as any to explain The Star must follow Eisnsteins definition of INSANITY as they keep hiring liberals and let them control the editorials.
My boy shook his head... looked up at me and said, "Let's go home dad- I want to short their stock and make money to contribute to local laws that prohibit trash on people's driveways in the morning".
What a great son I have!

  22. I can't wait to see the piece of shit paper fail. I quit buying it 20yrs ago. It turned to all fake news before Trump started the fake news theory. It has sucked for a long time. I read my shit online. Who needs a paper?

  23. they could get by with a couple of copy editors and outsource the reporting and editorial writing to journalism students.

the city hall reporting could continue to be written by city hall pr people, but eliminating the middleman and unnecessary costs.

also, more of a newsletter format could work, allowing subscribers to de-select the prefabricated national fake news.

  25. The last round of KC Star layoffs resulted in the over-population of UMKC's Public/Media Relations Department and resulted in a kingdom-building gridlock that has allowed every bobble and misstep happening anywhere in the School to go unnoticed until it became a Major Issue, sending the University Administration scurrying to catch up and try to contain the situation after someone outside the University brought it to light.

  26. Paper going down, some rich local will take over to have their say, foundations should support real journalism
