WILL $105K WORTH OF KANSAS CITY TAXPAYER FUNDED PUBLIC ART HELP LINWOOD SHOPPING CENTER REDEVELOPMENT SUCCEED???

City Hall is looking for enterprising artists to help inspire a sketchy grocery store project that's already in debt and teetering on the brink of FAIL before it's doors are first opened.

To wit . . .

FEAR THIS EXPENSIVE PUBLIC ART RFP THAT OFFERS INSIGHT INTO THE LOFTY IDEALS AND SKETCHY FINANCING OF THIS KANSAS CITY FOODIE FAIL IN THE MAKING!!!

The whole point of this project is a guilt-trip City Hall social engineering experiment that wants to create a suburban style food mecca in the urban core. This ideas is ridiculous on many fronts but the mere cost of the public art offers a preview of the impending shut down because most suburban grocery stores are HIDEOUS WAREHOUSES . . . People don't go to grocery stores to be inspired by art, they just get their chips, sugar, corn and assorted dips along with a few veggies to throw away later in the week . . . And they don't look back.

Once again, this is KCMO competing in a biz with a TINY profit margin run by merciless mega corporations who invented the ruthless grocery store game that's slowly killing most Americans.

So, don't be surprised when this thing closes down with much less fanfare.

On the bright side, for now, here's a chance for an artist to strike it rich at local taxpayer expense.

PUBLIC ART REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS (RFQ) Linwood Shopping Center

ESTIMATED PUBLIC ART PROJECT BUDGET: $105,000

DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTALS: July 28, 2017

Linwood Boulevard/31st Street at Prospect Avenue has long been a key cultural and economic center for the residents and businesses along the Prospect Corridor and adjacent neighborhoods . . .

Thus, it is with this history and legacy in mind that the proposed artwork captures and offers an image of that history and legacy but also connects to a future of hope, of growth, and of “what can be.” In addition to its inevitability, this redevelopment should be conveyed by the artists symbolically as well connecting the past with the future. In conjunction, there is sentiment by the redevelopers, the City and some residents that rebranding from the old “Linwood Shopping Center” to something new and different is desirable. So, each proposer is encouraged to consider a rebranding (suggested name change) with the artwork.

BUDGET/COMMISSION
Artwork for this project will be commissioned through Municipal Art Commission. Artists will coordinate work with city staff, and the design team. The estimated budget for artwork and all related art project costs is $105,000.

  1. Why not a sculpture of a 1973 Impala with two guns pointed out the windows. A little added glitz would be spinner wheels that turn in the wind.

  3. This this east oh Hwy 71. There's tons of traffic, a library, a medical clinic on these corners. Just because you don't like black and brown people doesn't stop the gentrification.

Bullshit! I remember this area had a broke down drugstore, St. Joe hospital, a pool hall, some filthy nigger bar, gambling and whores. Oops. My mistake. Those things are cultural and economic centers for blacks.

Building a taxpayer-subsidized grocery store is not exactly "gentrification".
There's a reason the grocery that used to be in the same building is no longer there and unless you expect the taxpayers to pick up the losses for the next one, like they have to do for the P&L District to the tune of $20 million/year until at least 2030, the "new" store will meet the same fate.
It's amazing how clueless people can get all swept up in the latest "urban futurist" buzzwords of transit, gentrification, creative class, and all the rest and it seems easy when the folks at city hall just keep shoveling money out the door to pay for the latest faddish and trendy toys.
But in a few years, the NEXT BIG THING will come along and all KCMO will have left to show will be decades of debt.
When are the Russian and Chinese oligarchs going to start snapping up the "luxury" apartments downtown?
    Disneyland on the plains.

    1. You are correct. Just look at the now closed Apple Mart at cleaver II and Troost...how long did it last....5 years?

I give this one 10 years at most....or the tax money runs out whichever comes first.
