Fun First Responder Fact: Kansas City Firefighter Overtime Busts Budget Every Year

Dead-Tree media reports annual outrage like it's news when, in fact, this one has left City Hall insiders fuming year after year:

Kansas City wrestles with huge firefighter overtime costs

An accounting firm's new report confirms what Kansas City officials already knew through the budgeting process - firefighter overtime is a huge expense, and a few individuals rake in an oversized share of those wages.

Question, would it be cheaper or cost more to staff properly?

  4. Make no mistake, this has nothing to do with poor scheduling, management, etc. These fire-fighters and the administration of them are milking it for every penny. The overtime is intentional and is used as a reward system. I wouldn't doubt for a second that the overtime practice is much like Forte's overtime; i.e. show up to a scene, leave, then bill for a minimum 4-four block.

  14. I've never tried to find the KCPD payroll, but isn't it required to be made publicly available? Whether online or in person. I would like some of these "inquiring minds" to look into it. I'm not a journo, blogger, just a regular joe wasting internet time commenting on TKC. I agree there is probably a ton of corruption-by-appearance on the KCPD budget. But, these City departments count on apathy by the mainstream media, and lack of time by small-time blogs or other interested parties; and it's worked out well for the City. All of our screeching on here means nothing to the powerbrokers and corrupt departments who benefit by having "no one" care.
