TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! KANSAS CITY SHARES MUCH OF GOV. BROWNBACK DEFEATED SUNFLOWER STATE ECONOMIC STRATEGY!!!

While Kansas Gov. Brownback pouts and predicts impending economic doom, progressives across the nation celebrate higher taxes and Republican in-fighting.

Accordingly, most Kansas City voters have overlooked some striking similarities to the Gov. Brownback plan that have taken hold in Kansas City proper.

Like it or not, and it deserves repeating, Mayor Sly is really just Gov. Brownback in a bow tie and a great deal of his economic initiatives are cut from the same supply-side cloth.

Accordingly, let's compare KCMO's fortunes to the recent Kansas smack-down . . .

The Kansas City TIF Craze Mimics Gov. Brownback's Corporate Tax Cut Hysteria

Kansas border war biz poaching by way of incentives and upper-class tax breaks is a tactic that 12th & Oak leaders often employ with varying degrees of success. Wile the strategy has inspired a coalition of urban core detractors, local news often downplays some of the very same criticism that was put on blast against the embattled Kansas Governor.

Distractions Power The KCMO Discourse

The culture war always keeps locals entertained while big money decisions are pushed forward behind the scenes. For Gov. Brownback, the continued (and well-deserved) crackdown on abortion, LGBT issues and Prez Obama opposition offered a great deal of cover. In KCMO, the effort to "resist" Prez Trump and immigration advocacy have directed the conversation in the midst of this Summer dedicated to development schemes.

Both Gov. Brownback & Mayor Sly Confront Mostly Incompetent Political Opposition

With the help of every newspaper in the nation, Kansas Democrats still couldn't beat Gov. Brownback despite the fact that his own party, clearly, wasn't that loyal to his cause. Similarly, Mayor Sly's last major election competition was some hobo.

Caveat - Grassroots petition gatherers have proven to be the only obstacle to the KCMO corporate agenda . . . But I digress . . .

Both Gov. Brownback & Mayor Sly Have Promised Far Too Much

This one just irks TKC and nobody else because people enjoy lies and modest economic gains don't make headlines. At the outset of his tax cut plan, Gov. Brownback imagined a Kansas economic renaissance that never really happened . . . In much the same way, KCMO is still waiting on promises of an influx of silicon prairie tech jobs and condo good life that remains out of reach for most residents.

Internets Love Doesn't Equal Consensus

Twitter followers and social media friends are great but they don't count for much in politics. Gov. Brownback has many proponents of his low-tax strategy just like Mayor Sly is the selfie king of Kansas City . . . Whilst online political endorsement & sharing is great for starting fights with relatives and faux friends . . . Votes and partnership with politicos across ideological lines is something that both has thwarted both Gov. Brownback and Mayor Sly.

To be fair . . . While Gov. Brownback worked to cut taxes in Kansas -- KCMO keeps piling on more levies, fees and bonds . . . This is tax & borrow good life tactic is CERTAINLY one of the keys to Mayor Sly's success and mainstream media popularity.

And so, Kansas City can safely celebrate a small victory in the economic border war as the fading middle-class and interest rate hikes quietly take their toll mostly outside of the hyper-partisan political lexicon.

Call this what it is, Kansas wealth redistribution. All of the state needs that JoCo gold.

  4. Some years back, the Governor of Arizona set up a special state account where people who complained their taxes were too low could deposit extra money. To no sane person's surprise, there were very few deposits to that account. Yeah, the media, Dems (sorry for the redundancy) and other assorted bellyachers talk the talk, but when it comes to voluntary separation of them from their own money, they won't walk the walk.

  6. 4:24 all us Kansans wanted was for everyone to pay their fair share. Why should 330,000 companies not pay income taxes? Do you realize Koch Industries is now considered an LLC even though they operate in more than 60 countries? Why should Koch and the lady down the street that operates a daycare out of her house be considered one and the same? Last, the proof is in the pudding. It was a colossal failure. Revenues were way down and nobody relocated here. Look at growth industries like technology. Do you really think the next Bill Gates wants to move his start-up tech company to a state that regularly debates evolution in the State House? Do you think someone wants to move to a state where the governor makes a concerted effort to have our education system be like Mississippi? Do you think a young entrepreneur wants to move to a state that is always in the news for the wrong thing? Young people tend to be more liberal and progressive, does Kansas strike you as that? When the face of your state is a clown like Brownback you have almost no chance of recruiting people here.

  8. Yes, it is more expensive -- and requires more in taxes -- to run a major city than a wheat field. Cities need to have sewers. You can poop in you wheat field for free. Cities need roads. You can just tractor across the field.

    1. With all the vacant houses, most of Kansas City looks like a field nowadays.

    2. 6:42 - Uh, yep, looks and smells like pooped in fields, where lawn tractors seldom enter.

First KCMO is hardly a "major" city.
Secondly it is the fifth worst-run city in the entire country.
And finally, the basic services provided for residents, starting with public safety, the most basic of all, are poorly funded and mostly ignored by electeds who fancy themselves real estate developers and celebrity wannabes.
Other than that, your comments are right on the mark.

  10. Kc is an easy mark for any type of business that doesn't want to pay taxes. The mayor and council give them sweetheart deals and in return they get high paying jobs in return. Circo now has a great job with KCP&L. Others have left for high paying positions at Blue Cross and Blue shield. I can't remember others but that's the trade they make to screw us the citizens
