KICK-ASS TKC READER: Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance

Can anyone in this city think past next week? Everyone saw parking issues in River Market coming with the streetcar except those charged with anticipating them and preparing a solution. Now, those who work in the offices and restaurants are screwed. Why wasn’t a parking facility planned that blends in with the historic architecture? Of course, that’s another ball drop. The most historic heritage area we have has been allowed to be overrun with simplistic, modernist design. The character of the River Market is being taken away by the very people attracted there by its character. We should have exterior design codes like they do in the historic areas of Europe. Be as modern as you want on the inside but design for the ages on the outside.

Hopefully they will be more thoughtful in the West Bottoms before it’s too late.

  1. Don't know if it's destroying the river market but the plan is obvious, they want to turn this into a luxury district. Unfortunately, that means driving out a lot of small business in favor of high end retail and stuff that hasn't traditionally sold in Kansas City for decades.

Good luck with that, right now it just seems to be pissing people off.

    1. And now we wait for the consultants to come back from their 3 hour lunches and earn their billable hours by "working" on a blog.

This is how your e-tax is spent.

    2. Don't be a conspiracy theorist, there are plenty of people who rabidly support the streetcar and will not listen to any criticism. It just so happens they all happen to be working for the Streetcar Authority.

  2. Fantastic.

More parking enforcement in a midsized Midwestern city with 66 murders and counting.

  3. Look for parking meter vandalism to commence on day one.

  4. Streetcar Authority has had plans to hire a private firm to ticket vehicles and enforce that "respect the rail" motto.

  5. TooT! LooT! All aboard for the next stop...RICKSHAWS BY THE RIVER! Overland Park's and other markets are looking better by the day.

Fox4 noon newsie said area workers were taking advantage of free parking spots and abusing 2 hour zones. So, more of those paychecks going byebye to parking fees... And, you may ask, wtf does the 1% tax pay for?!

  6. Hi I always manage to GET ROCK STAR PARKING. O.K. THE RIVER MARKET IS BECOMING A TOURIST DESTINATION ITS GREAT FOR FARM TO TABLE FOODS,AT THE MARKET. ON SATURDAY IT'S HARD TO FIND A PARKING PLACE BECAUSE OF THE VISITORS PARKING ALL DAY AND TAKING THE STREET CAR SOUTH.

  8. Anyone voting for it to be extended to UMKC will soon find their nice little Brookside neighborhood invaded with the same problem of people driving to pick up the Streetcar at UMKC and parking everywhere in their nice neighborhoods. They're going to have to created zoned parking so that the Brookside residents won't lose their street parking to Streetcar riders.

  9. I plan to ride the streetcar someday. I plan to support the shops by perhaps buying a small cup of coffee to share with my friend. I sincerely hope this offsets the millions in tax brakes and ooprrating costs. Of course if Parking is sparse or costs to park- I will not go and instead go back and patronize a non-violent city.
Perhaps the leaders of the city of fountains should selll the Plaza Tennis Courts and use that money to reduce crime. If they don't- maybe they can get Monopoly Money and see how far that gets them.

  10. People will just keep putting money in the meter and still stay as long as they like, where will all that money go?????

    1. According to a report by Lauren Halifax on Fox4 just now, there's talk of more 2hour spaces that will be metered by next month. Unpaid meters will bring fines and possibly get 'boots' attached. So, the all day stay is soon history, it seems.
