Kansas City Airport Ruckus Revisited

Thanks to some of the best denizens of our blog community, we talked about this dust-up last month . . . Now complaints are still finding their way to MSM. Take a look:

Man says he felt threatened during traffic stop at Kansas City International Airport

A man says he and his mother feared for their lives after a traffic stop at Kansas City International Airport. The officer that made the stop has been cleared of any wrongdoing, but the man says the investigation is incomplete. Michael McGill Jr. says he was humiliated by a Kansas City Airport police officer.

  1. Let me guess, another boon looking for a payday?

  2. I'm lily white, and drive a nice(ish) car. If I drop someone off curbside, the cops are immediately RIGHT there honking to get me going, even if someone is actively pulling bags out of the trunk. Here's the real deal as to what's going on. This is ALL part of the orchestrated attempt by City officials to get the one-terminal built. They are doing everything they can: harassment curbside when picking up or dropping off, artificial restroom closures (you mean to say six commercial toilets failed simultaneously and a plumber can't fix them?!?), general dirtiness of spaces by significantly cutting janitorial staff (alternately, if they don't have the budget, how are they going to pay for staff in a larger newer airport). This has been going on since the very first instance of one-terminal discussion hit the rumor mill around two years ago, maybe even before.

So fella, it wasn't race, you were being obnoxious to a cop who has been given guidelines to make the airport as least user friendly as possible.

  3. agree that kci cops are obnoxious in general and understand that someone sensitive might take it personally.

  4. If the KCI cops were anything more than the slim pickings they would be in a real police department. These ass clowns are basically mall cops given too much authority by the city. If people knew about the arrest history of a few of these fine officers they would demand the city clean up it's act.

Nevertheless, I have had my ass chewed by a few overzealous KCPD officers along the way so this guy pretty much got a dose of the Missouri cop culture. Just chalk it up to that fucking tunnel vision some of these guys get locked into and move on. They can't help it. They actually believe they are accomplishing something with that rookie attitude bullshit.

  5. Here's a fun game, that I've played several times while waiting for someone to get out of baggage check. I sit in my car and wait for the cops to pull up behind, if and a big IF, they don't have their emergency lights activated (flashing yellow is NOT an emergency light requiring compliance), you are not required to stay in place. Wait until they get out of their car, start walking towards me, and then drive off. I've had them hopping mad before, but have yet to have one feel so motivated as to follow me and conduct an actual traffic stop further around the loop.

If the signs are clear on what you can and can not do then the officers are only doing their job. If they have to confront you with the fact you can't read then they are entitled to deal with you as need be.

  7. @Wyatt, I can't disagree with what you said, but when I'm sitting at the airport picking someone up (i.e. waiting for them to actually get outside) mostly there are few other drivers or fliers around. I give the cops a pass in running people off, but I would like to see some restraint exercised, i.e. if I'm sitting at the gate exit and there are literally no other people standing outside, no cars either, they could exercise that restraint and drive around the loop again. That said, it is certainly the case that they have standing orders to be as uncivilized as possible to lower our satisfaction of what the airport represents.

  8. Park in the cell phone lot. Tell your passenger to call you when he has landed and, if applicable, retrieved his luggage. You will be at the gate soon after the passenger gets to the curb. MCI is a piece of cake. Try getting picked up at LaGuardia.

  9. KCI is more convenient than any of the ten or more airports we've used thus year.

    Save KCI!

  10. ...and not a fucking airport in the country is convenient. However, I do kind of favor having my nads tickled by those TSA agents with the lisp.
